Brennan, U.S. Navy Retired2 Thirty years ago there was a New Jersey connection to the long-lasting Iran-Iraq War. That eight years of conflict was one of the longest international two-state wars of the 20th century, beginning in September 1980 and effectively concluding in a truce in August 1988. The primary and bloody land war between Iran and Iraq began during the Iranian Hostage Crisis. The Shah had left Iran and that year the USSR invaded Afghanistan. The conflict expanded to sea and involved many neutral nations whose shipping came under attack by the combatants. The parties’ intent was to damage their opponents’ oil exports and revenues and decrease world supplies. Some suggested that Iran and Iraq wanted to draw other states into the conflict. An Iranian source explained the origin of the conflict at sea. The tanker war seemed likely to precipitate a major international incident for two reasons. First, some 70 percent of Japanese, 50 percent of West European, and 7 percent of American oil imports came from the Persian Gulf in the early 1980s. Second, the assault on tankers involved neutral shipping as well as ships of the belligerent states.3 The relatively obscure first phase began in 1981, and the well-publicized second phase began in 1984. New Jersey, half a world away from the Persian (Arabian) gulf, became involved when the United States agreed to escort Kuwait tankers in an effort to support a friendly nation and keep the international waters open. -

Abstract This thesis examines a small component of the Australian Navy, the Fleet Air Arm. Naval aviators have been contributing to Australian military history since 1914 but they remain relatively unheard of in the wider community and in some instances, in Australian military circles. Aviation within the maritime environment was, and remains, a versatile weapon in any modern navy but the struggle to initiate an aviation branch within the Royal Australian Navy was a protracted one. Finally coming into existence in 1947, the Australian Fleet Air Arm operated from the largest of all naval vessels in the post battle ship era; aircraft carriers. HMAS Albatross, Sydney, Vengeance and Melbourne carried, operated and fully maintained various fixed-wing aircraft and the naval personnel needed for operational deployments until 1982. These deployments included contributions to national and multinational combat, peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. With the Australian government’s decision not to replace the last of the aging aircraft carriers, HMAS Melbourne, in 1982, the survival of the Australian Fleet Air Arm, and its highly trained personnel, was in grave doubt. This was a major turning point for Australian Naval Aviation; these versatile flyers and the maintenance and technical crews who supported them retrained on rotary aircraft, or helicopters, and adapted to flight operations utilising small compact ships. -

Vice Admiral Dixon R. Smith Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Fleet Readiness and Logistics Vice Adm. Dixon Smith is a native of Green Farms, Connecticut, and entered the Naval Academy Preparatory School in 1978. After receiving his commission from the United States Naval Academy in 1983, he was designated a surface warfare officer in 1985. Smith holds a master’s degree in business from Webster University and is a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Smith’s first sea tour was aboard USS Miller (FF 1091), serving as first lieutenant and damage control assistant. Follow-on service at sea included operations officer aboard USS Jarrett (FFG 33), participating in Operation Desert Storm; operations officer aboard USS Gridley (CG 21), participating in the establishment of Operation Southern Watch over Southern Iraq; and executive officer aboard USS Antietam (CG 54). Assignments ashore include duty at Naval Education and Training Center, Newport, Rhode Island, as seamanship instructor and service as aide to the naval inspector general, Washington, D.C. Duties in Naples, Italy, as deputy executive assistant to Commander in Chief, Allied Forces, Southern Europe/Commander in Chief, U.S. Naval Forces, Europe, included service in support of the Joint Forces Commander, Operation Allied Force and Commander, Joint Task Force Noble Anvil during NATO’s operations in Kosovo. Additionally, he served a tour at the United States Naval Academy as 4th Battalion officer and Plebe Summer officer in charge. CALL THE HANDS NHSA DIGITAL NEWSLETTER Issue No.16 February 2018 From the President Welcome to our first edition of Call the Hands for 2018. Since December, the wreck of HMAS AE1 has been discovered, STS Young Endeavour celebrated 30 years of service and Society members have been involved in several interesting activities. In the week prior to Christmas the discovery of HMAS AE1, excited the nation and ended the Navy’s longest mystery. AE1 was lost off the island of Rabaul on 14 September 1914 with all 35 crew members. The wreck site will remain ‘close held’ by Find AE1 Expedition member organisations until appropriate measures are taken to protect the site. Expedition leader, retired Rear Admiral Peter Briggs who has worked much of his life to find HMAS AE1 and his colleagues are saluted for this historic achievement. On 16 January the Commanding Officer HMAS Hobart, Captain John Stavridis and Supply Officer, Lieutenant Commander Mark Lee visited the Boatshed to acquaint themselves with an important HMAS Hobart heritage item, the Captain’s table from HMAS Hobart (I). The Society has held the table in trust since Hobart (II) decommissioned in May 2000. Descendants of HMAS Patricia Cam crew members and the community marked the 76th anniversary of her loss with a series of events in Darwin, Gosford, Sydney and Canberra from 20 to 22 January. Patricia Cam sank on 22 January 1943 after being bombed by a Japanese float plane. Society members participated in the Gosford (plaque unveiling where she was built) and Canberra last post ceremony at the Australian War Memorial. -

SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2017 SUPPOs Supplying the Fight A Message from the Chief of Supply Corps Recognizing the central importance of supply to establishing the Navy, President George Washington laid the foundation for the U.S. Navy Supply Corps in 1775 with the appointment of Tench Francis, a Philadelphia businessman, as the country’s first Purveyor of Public Supplies. Francis provided vital support to the first Navy ships, and started our tradition of selfless service. The Navy’s trusted providers of supplies, our supply officers (SUPPOs) keep operations running smoothly to support the mission. But they can’t do it alone. Working as a team with their skilled and experienced enlisted members, our SUPPOs are experts in our field who know inventory and financial management, food, retail, postal operations, and disbursing management. They are leaders and problem solvers who tackle complex challenges to implement effective and efficient management solutions, ensuring our customers’ needs are met. To be “Ready for Sea,” we must be professionally ready with the skills to operate in all our lines of operation. We also need character readiness, demonstrated by our integrity, accountabili- ty, initiative, and toughness. Lastly, we need to be individually ready; to be fit, healthy, and ready to meet the demands of the fight. This issue provides insights from our SUPPOs’ important work as they meet the unique needs of their various commands. Like the pursuers and paymasters who have gone before, SUPPOs uphold our rich heritage, and embrace their responsibilities to support the warfighter with a servant’s heart. TEACHER HELP GUIDE LESSON PLAN: The Nuclear Umbrella – Still Here After the Cold War DEVELOPED BY: John Clark, science teacher and military historian, Deltona High School, Deltona, FL 2012 Naval Historical Foundation STEM-H Teacher Fellowship INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL: (history) The Cold War period is required study under the educational standards of many states. This lesson offers an original way to cover that period in American history and potentially raise student achievement through its uniqueness. BACKGROUND: The Cold War is officially over but the threat from the evolution of nuclear weapons that created that war remains and is growing. Students need to understand that an attack on the United States by a nuclear weapon is still a very real possibility. Make the Cold War come alive for your students by using the resources and web site of the Cold War Gallery at the Naval Museum in Washington, D.C. to educate today’s students about the realities of living under a nuclear umbrella. Focusing on the role of the Navy during this long and tense 45 year period is a great way to build student interest in learning about an important chapter in recent American history. Students will gain a perspective of how living under the nuclear umbrella has evolved to present day. Our future citizens need to internalize the continuing dangers and the threat to American life evolving from the spread of nuclear weapons around the globe. If you cannot come to the museum you can use its resources by taking your students on a virtual tour of the gallery. -

The Return of Friction and the Transformation of US Naval Forces in the 21st Century Aaron Scholer Department of Government Georgetown University Washington, D.C. ABSTRACT In the decades which have followed the end of the Cold War, the US military has hesitantly explored the transformation of its forces. Uncertain as to what it should transform into, it is equally unsure as to how it should go about the process of transformation, let alone why it should transform in the first place. Fiscal constraints have driven some transformation, a commonsensical realization that t he perceived enemy has changed has introduced more, and technological discoveries have prompted still more transformation; yet the military of the 21st century is set to be only incrementally evolved from its late 20th century parent. In no other service is this début-de-siècle structural uncertainty as apparent as in the US Navy- lashed as it is to the concept of the super-carrier until well into the mid-21st century. This paper explores the transformation of a segment of the US Navy not purely as a reaction to newly available technology and the like, but as a response to a new appreciation of the maritime battlespace: an appreciation driven by the still-unfolding theoretical fruits of the Revolution in Military Affairs. This transformed force, a naval swarm, will not only be a viable option for both ‘blue’ and ‘green/brown’ water battlespace dominance, but will also be a first step in learning how to operate within a chaotic battlespace rich in what Carl von Clausewitz termed “friction.” INTRODUCTION The US military is in the midst of a Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) and it is a revolution that will ultimately deliver unheard of precision, firepower and command and control capabilities. -

Compared with the often bloody fighting on land, where an uneasy stalemate has developed, the "tanker war" in the waters of the Gulf has been a mere sideshow . Submissions The tanker war is a campaign of economic attrition and political intimidation. Because Iran destroyed Advertising Iraq's oilterminal early in the war, no tankers steam to or from Iraq, and Iraq's oil exports now travel by overland pipeline.
