Club Reports .........................................47 © THE ROBERT BURNS WORLD FEDERATION LIMITED 1 “ANOTHER PROBLEM SOLVED” ARRAN CONNECTION WITH BURNS espite the fact that the Isle of Arran can be clearly seen (weather permitting) from the Ayrshire coast, there had never been any mention that Robert Burns or, indeed, any other member of the Burns Dfamily, had ever set foot on the Island. Therefore, it was interesting that recently a grave there was given some publicity. It lies in the secluded Kirkyard of Kilmory in the south of the island and bears the following inscription:- Erected by William Begg in memory of his Brother James who rests in Jesus. Born 19th. Sept. 1836. Died 8th. May 1874. Grand Nephew Of the Poet Burns. Having withstood the ravages of all kinds of weather and considering its age, it is little wonder that the inscription is showing signs of wear. Apparently somebody had once conceived the idea of lining out the letters and numbers with white paint but it is doubtful if this treatment was attended by the desired results as the paint has now flaked and became blotchy, making reading even more difficult. Some attention by way of a cleaning is called for. So, if anyone is over on the island on holiday this year they might consider giving it some careful remedial work. These notes would not be complete without giving some details of James Begg. He was born in Kilmarnock and seems to have been the only near relative of the Poet to have lived on the Isle of Arran. Like Robert Burns, he died at the comparatively early age of 37. His father, John Begg, was born on 27 April 1796 at Mossgiel, Mauchline. John Begg was the second son of Isabella Burns, the Poet’s youngest sister. This confirms that it is correctly stated on the gravestone in Kilmory Churchyard that James Begg was a Grand Nephew of Robert Burns. I had little difficulty in tracing his birth but I had a real struggle to find his death entry which had taken place, according to the inscription on the gravestone, on 8 May 1874, well after the registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Scotland had commenced. After spending some time exploring the remarkable system of our computerised registration records in Edinburgh, I suddenly came across it. It has been registered under the name of BEGGS. The death had been registered by the occupier

Description Planning permission is sought for a major residential development on greenfield agricultural land to the north east of Girdle Toll and west of Lawthorn in Irvine. The 6.2ha site is roughly rectangular in shape and lies to the east of the Sourlie Roundabout, which forms the junction of Lochlibo Road and Cairnmount Road (A736). The site is bisected by a single track rural road which follows a north easterly alignment from its junction with the Old Toll House on Lochlibo Road towards the open countryside beyond the town boundary. Between Sourlie Roundabout and the single track road, the site consists of a gently sloping field which now appears to be disused, although was known to be used for silage production in previous years. The field is bounded by well-defined broadleaved hedgerows and there is a narrow woodland belt along its western boundary with the A736. To the east of the single track road is a well-maintained grass field on sloping ground that is currently used for sheep grazing.

PREFACE. Of the numerous biographers of the poet Burns, few have dilated on his lineage. Some doubtless felt that his position might not be elevated by any pedigree, however famous. Others may have been content to hold that himself being in lowly circumstances, any inquiry as to his progenitors would be useless and unprofitable. By his biographer Dr Currie he is described as " in reality a peasant." What in respect of descent Burns really was these Memoirs will show. Bemotely sprung from a landed stock, his im- mediate ancestors were yeomen, at first opvdent, latterly the reverse. The family had produced another poet, the author of "Thrummy Cap;" but decided indications of intellectual activity did not appear in the house till subsequent to the marriage of the poet's paternal grandfather. The wife of this person was of the family of Keith of Craig, a branch of the house of Keith-Marischal.

We want to ensure they have the best start in life, are ready to succeed and live longer, healthier lives. We check services are meeting the principles of Getting it Right For Every Child (also known as GIRFEC). Set up by Scottish Government, GIRFEC is a national approach to working in a consistent way with all children and young people. It.is underpinned by the principles of prevention and early intervention. The approach helps services focus on what makes a positive difference for children and young people - and what they can do to improve. Getting it Right for Every Child is being woven into all policy, practice, strategy and legislation that affect children, young people and their families. There are eight wellbeing indicators at the heart of Getting it Right for Every Child. They are: safe; healthy; achieving; nurtured; active; respected; responsible; and included. They are often referred to as the SHANARRI indicators. We use these indicators at inspection, to assess how services are making a positive difference for children. This service was previously registered with the Care Commission and transferred its registration to the Care Inspectorate on 1 April 2011.

Forfarshire Masonic Celebrities Sir Alexander Burnes 1805 - 1841 'Bokhara Burnes' 'Text taken from the Montrose Standard and Angus and Mearns Register - 3rd March 1865' Transcribed and Reproduced by Iain D McIntosh [October 2016] Forfarshire Masonic Celebrities Sir Alexander Burnes Sir Alexander Burnes 1805 to 1841 Killed at Kabul in 1841 along with his Brother Lt Charles Burnes (1812 - 1841) at the beginning of the 1st Anglo Afghan War Sir Alexander Burnes - I.D. McIntosh 2016 Page 2 Text from the “Montrose Standard and Angus and Mearns Register – 3rd March 1865.” In the present number of ‘Good Words’ the following very interesting sketch of the life of the late Sir Alexander Burnes, a native of Montrose, and brother to Mr Adam Burnes, writer is given by Mr John William Kaye under the head of “Our Indian Heroes.” The article is introduced by referring to the brilliant career of the late Joseph Hume in India, the influence it exercised over the mind of young Burnes, and the intimacy which arose between Mr James Burnes and Mr Hume. The father of Sir Alexander, we need not tell our local readers was Provost of Montrose, and was closely related to our national poet Robert Burns. After giving his sons (of whom he had four who lived to be adults) a good education, he availed himself of the intimacy which had arisen between him and Mr Hume, and solicited his influence on behalf of his two sons James and Alexander, the former (the eldest) being destined for medical service. Alexander was promised a cadetship in the East India Company’s Service as soon as he was old enough for the appointment.
