On Jan. 13, 1942, 100 • Enlisted (UEQ): 87 enlisted men arrived to form organizations on the base. • UEQ Capacity: 94 • In 1942 the installation was named Kaye Field (pronounced Officer (UOQ): 221 • UOQ Capacity: 234 “coy”), in honor of Capt Sam Kaye, a World War I flying ace from Columbus, but due to confusion with another airfield the Privatized Housing: name changed to Columbus Army Flying School in March of • Occupants: 1140 1942. That year, 25 cadets entered training on Feb. 9 and • 424 graduated on March 6. Occupied Units: • Total Privatized Housing: 453 During World War II, 7,412 students received their wings and commissions at CAFS. During this time, they trained in the AT -8, AT-9, AT-10, and B-25. When the war ended in 1945, CAFB Groups the base reached a peak of 2,300 enlisted men, 300 officers, and an average of 250 pilot cadets per class. The end of Wing Staff Agencies hostilities slowed training and in 1946 the base was • 14th Comptroller Squadron (CPTS) inactivated. • Public Affairs, Protocol, CAG (CAOC) • Inspector General (IG) Air Training Command activated Columbus AFB on Dec. 20, • Wing Equal Opportunity Office (EO) 1950 to handle increased pilot demand for the Korean War. • Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC) ATC established the 3301st Training Squadron (Contract • Wing Safety (SE) Flying) on March 1, 1951. • Wing Plans and Programs (XP) • Command Post (CP) On April 1, 1955, HQ USAF transferred Columbus AFB from • Wing Maintenance Authority (MA) ATC control to Strategic Air Command (SAC) and Second Air • Historian (HO) Force. The base became the home of a B-52 squadron and a • Chaplain (HC) KC-135 jet refueling tanker squadron under the 4228th • Staff Judge Advocate (JA) Strategic Wing. 14th Operations Group In 1963, SAC inactivated the 4228th Strategic Wing and • 14th Operations Support Squadron (OSS) activated the 454th Bombardment Wing, Heavy. They • 14th Student Squadron (STUS) conducted air refueling operations and trained in • 37th Flying Training Squadron (37 FTS) bombardment operation at Columbus AFB. T-6 Texan II o • 41st Flying Training Squadron (41 FTS) HQ USAF transferred Columbus back to ATC and its original T-6 Texan II o mission of training pilots on July 1, 1969. ATC activated the • 43rd Flying Training Squadron (43 FTS) 3650th Pilot Training Wing on Feb. 15. The first class, 71-01, Air Force Reserve Command entered training on July 17, 1969. o • 48th Flying Training Squadron (48 FTS) T-1A Jayhawk On June 1, 1972, ATC discontinued the 3650th and activated o • 49th Fighter Training Squadron (49 FTS) the 14th Flying Training Wing, which continues today as the T-38C IFF Talon home of the world’s premier pilot training. o • 50th Flying Training Squadron (50 FTS) In the mid-1990s, generalized UPT was replaced by o T-38C Talon • 81st Fighter Squadron (81 FS) Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training, which consisted of three phases. This spurred a need for the T-1A at CAFB, and o A-29 Super Tucano at Moody AFB, GA the first tanker and transport training aircraft arrived on base 14th Mission Support Group on January 25, 1996. CAFB received the T-6A Texan II in • 14th Force Support Squadron (FSS) October of 2006, and on April 2, 2008, the T-37 “Tweet” was • 14th Security Forces Squadron (SFS) officially retired and replaced by the newer aircraft. • 14th Civil Engineer Squadron (CES) • 14th Communications Squadron (CS) On May 19, 2007, the 49th Fighter Training Squadron returned • 14th Logistics Readiness Squadron (LRS) to CAFB from Moody AFB to teach the Introduction to Fighter • Fundamentals program. 14th Contracting Squadron (CONS) 14th Medical Group The 14th FTW activated the 81st Fighter Squadron at Moody • 14th Medical Operations Squadron (MDOS) AFB, GA on Oct. 1, 2014. The 81 FS, a geographically • 14th Medical Support Squadron (MDSS) separated unit of the 14th FTW, trains pilots and maintainers from Afghanistan on the A-29 Super Tucano. (1) The Legislature finds that incompatible 14 development of land close to military installations can adversely 15 affect the ability of such installations to carry out their 16 missions. The Legislature further finds that such development 17 also threatens the public safety because of the possibility of 18 accidents occurring within the areas surrounding a military 19 installation. In addition, the economic vitality of a community 20 is affected when military operations and missions must relocate 21 because of incompatible urban encroachment. Therefore, the 22 Legislature finds it desirable for counties and municipalities in S. B. TENNESSEE WILLIAMS HOME AND WELCOME CENTER Make the first home of legendary playwright Tennessee Williams your first stop in Columbus. This home was the rectory of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where his grandfather, the Reverend Walter Dakin, served. In 1993, the rectory was in jeopardy of being torn down to make room for a church expansion. In an effort to preserve this historical and literary landmark, the home was loaded onto flatbed trucks and taken to its new site on Main Street. Extensive efforts were made to restore the 1875 Victorian home to its original glory. It was then reopened as the official Welcome Center for the city of Columbus. Just three months after the opening, Tennessee Williams was honored with a U.S. postage stamp, and a ceremony was held at the home.
