View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by NECTAR 1 The Girls Who Waited? Female Companions and Gender in Doctor Who Lorna Jowett Abstract: Science fiction has the potential to offer something new in terms of gender representation. This doesn’t mean it always delivers on this potential. Amid the hype surrounding the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, the longest running science fiction series on television, a slightly critical edge is discernable in the media coverage concerning the casting of the twelfth Doctor and issues of representation in the series. This paper examines Doctor Who in the broader context of TV drama and changes to the TV industry, analysing the series’ gender representation, especially in the 2005 reboot, and focusing largely on the female ‘companions’. Keywords: gender representation, television, feminism, BBC. When I put together an earlier version of this paper two years ago, I discovered a surprising gap in the academic study of Doctor Who around gender. Gender in science fiction has often been studied, after all, and Star Trek, another science fiction television series starting in the 1960s (original run 1966-69) and continued via spin-offs and reboots, has long been analysed in terms of gender. So why not Doctor Who? Admittedly, Doctor Who’s creators have no clear philosophy about trying to represent a more equal society, as with the utopian Trek. The lack of scholarship on gender in Doctor Who may also be part of a lack of scholarship generally on the series—academic study of it is just gaining momentum, and only started to accumulate seriously in the last five years.

PART ONE THE DOCTOR AND HIS COMPANIONS 1 1 A Young-Old Face Out with the New and in with the Old in Doctor Who Richard Hewett Introduction ‘I approve of your new face, Doctor - so much more like mine.’ This line, spoken by the now ancient, enervated and seemingly dying Davros in ‘The Magician’s Apprentice’, is just one of many age-related barbs directed at the Twelfth Doctor during Peter Capaldi’s reign, serving as a constant reminder that the Time Lord is no longer (if, indeed, his on-screen self ever was)1 a young man. Throughout his tenure, friends and foes alike highlighted the latest incarnation’s wrinkled, somewhat cadaverous visage, grey hair, and scrawny body, the Doctor being variously described as a ‘desiccated man crone’ (‘Robot of Sherwood’), a ‘grey-haired stick insect’ (‘Listen’), and a ‘skeleton man’ (‘Last Christmas’).

  • “Don't Be a Warrior. Be a Doctor"
_________________________________________________________________________ ACADEMIC | SPRING 2016 “Don't Be A Warrior. Be A Doctor" By Saljooq Asif One of the greatest challenges that war veterans face is their return, homecoming, and reintegration into standard human society. After all, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma resulting from war not only affects one person, but also “creates havoc among many” (“PTSD Awareness”). Dr. Jonathan Shay examines and elaborates upon these difficulties in his literary work Achilles in Vietnam, in which he compares the experiences of Vietnam veterans with poetic descriptions of warfare in Homer’s Iliad. Shay expertly discusses several issues that veterans often experience, including special comradeships and the rageful berserk state. If, as Shay explains, the horrors of war lead to trauma and the undoing of human character, then perhaps humanity can be restored by reciprocally gazing into the face of the Other, the one who “always eludes my grasp” (Irvine 10). Indeed, those who have been traumatized by the horrors of war must first become “inhuman” in order to become human once more (Butler 104). Only when both sides—veteran and civilian, traumatized and untraumatized, Self and Other—respond to each other’s calls with unadulterated love can true healing and unity be achieved. In spite of the atrocities of war, Shay argues that soldiers can still find a unique sense of companionship in the midst of battle. Shay maintains, perhaps ironically, that war zones cultivate a strong sense of “human attachment” (39). He further explains that “[c]ombat calls forth a passion of care among men who fight beside each other that is comparable to the Page 1 of 14 earliest and most deeply felt family relationships” (39).
