Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community.

7 September 2018 FULL CASTING ANNOUNCED FOR THE NATIONAL THEATRE’S PRODUCTION OF NINE NIGHT AT THE TRAFALGAR STUDIOS NINE NIGHT by Natasha Gordon Trafalgar Studios 1 December 2018 – 9 February 2019, Press night 6 December The National Theatre have today announced the full cast for Nine Night, Natasha Gordon’s critically acclaimed play which will transfer from the National Theatre to the Trafalgar Studios on 1 December 2018 (press night 6 December) in a co-production with Trafalgar Theatre Productions. Natasha Gordon will take the role of Lorraine in her debut play, for which she has recently been nominated for the Best Writer Award in The Stage newspaper’s ‘Debut Awards’. She is joined by Oliver Alvin-Wilson (Robert), Michelle Greenidge (Trudy), also nominated in the Stage Awards for Best West End Debut, Hattie Ladbury (Sophie), Rebekah Murrell (Anita) and Cecilia Noble (Aunt Maggie) who return to their celebrated NT roles, and Karl Collins (Uncle Vince) who completes the West End cast. Directed by Roy Alexander Weise (The Mountaintop), Nine Night is a touching and exuberantly funny exploration of the rituals of family. Gloria is gravely sick. When her time comes, the celebration begins; the traditional Jamaican Nine Night Wake. But for Gloria’s children and grandchildren, marking her death with a party that lasts over a week is a test. Nine rum-fuelled nights of music, food, storytelling and laughter – and an endless parade of mourners. The production is designed by Rajha Shakiry, with lighting design by Paule Constable, sound design by George Dennis, movement direction by Shelley Maxwell, company voice work and dialect coaching by Hazel Holder, and the Resident Director is Jade Lewis.

A special, light-hearted, 50th anniversary While many reflect on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of JFK or the 50th anniversary release of the book, “Where The Wild Things Are,” many of us have been enjoying a year long celebration of Whovian proportions. What’s this great celebration? The 50th anniversary of the popular British science fiction show, “Doctor Who!” Yes, 50 years ago, the world got it’s first taste of the Doctor, his TARDIS (which can travel through all of space and time) that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside, and the first in a series of many adventures. As a science fiction show, it was not unusual to see aliens. But because the Doctor could also travel through time, there were quite a few historically set adventures as well. What “Doctor Who” fan can forget the time when the Doctor made the TARDIS invisible and landed in President Nixon’s Oval Office? It was crazy, funny, and totally something the Doctor would do because he showed up to help. That’s the thing about “Doctor Who;” it isn’t just a show and it isn’t just mere entertainment. It does what a good show, lasting this long, should do, challenge the ethical and moral values of the characters as well as the viewers. In order to keep the show going with different lead actors, we know the Doctor (an alien who looks human from the planet Gallifrey) is the last of a race known as Time Lords. And, although they can die, they usually regenerate into a different person but with the same memories.

Sociopathetic abscess or yawning chasm? The absent postcolonial transition in Doctor Who Lindy A Orthia The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia Abstract This paper explores discourses of colonialism, cosmopolitanism and postcolonialism in the long-running television series, Doctor Who. Doctor Who has frequently explored past colonial scenarios and has depicted cosmopolitan futures as multiracial and queer- positive, constructing a teleological model of human history. Yet postcolonial transition stages between the overthrow of colonialism and the instatement of cosmopolitan polities have received little attention within the program. This apparent ‘yawning chasm’ — this inability to acknowledge the material realities of an inequitable postcolonial world shaped by exploitative trade practices, diasporic trauma and racist discrimination — is whitewashed by the representation of past, present and future humanity as unchangingly diverse; literally fixed in happy demographic variety. Harmonious cosmopolitanism is thus presented as a non-negotiable fact of human inevitability, casting instances of racist oppression as unnatural blips. Under this construction, the postcolonial transition needs no explication, because to throw off colonialism’s chains is merely to revert to a more natural state of humanness, that is, cosmopolitanism. Only a few Doctor Who stories break with this model to deal with the ‘sociopathetic abscess’ that is real life postcolonial modernity. GERALD THOMAS COLLECTION GERALD THOMAS COLLECTION SCOPE AND CONTENT Documents relating to the career of director GERALD THOMAS (Born Hull 10/12/1920, died Beaconsfield 9/11/1993). When Gerald Thomas died, his producer partner of 40 years Peter Rogers said: ‘His epitaph will be that he directed all the Carry On films.’ Indeed, for an intense 20-year period Thomas directed the Carry On gang through their innuendo laden exploits, and became responsible, along with Rogers, for creating one of the most enduring and endearing British film series, earning him his place in British popular culture. Thomas originally studied to become a doctor, before war service with the Royal Sussex Regiment put paid to his medical career. When demobilised in 1946, he took a job as assistant in the cutting rooms of Two Cities Films at Denham Studios, where he took Assistant Editor credits on Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet (1948) and the John Mills thriller The October Man (1947). In 1949, he received his first full credit as editor, on the Margaret Lockwood melodrama Madness of the Heart (1949). During this time Peter Rogers had been working as associate producer with his wife, producer Betty Box, on such films as It’s Not Cricket (1949) and Don’t Ever Leave Me (1949). It was Venetian Bird in 1952 that first brought Thomas and Rogers together; Thomas employed as editor by director brother Ralph, and Rogers part of the producer team with Betty Box. Rogers was keen to form a director/producer pairing (following the successful example of Box and Ralph Thomas), and so gave Gerald his first directing credit on the Circus Friends (1956), a Children’s Film Foundation production.
