Chaplet of Divine Mercy / Vespers THE CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY Corpus Christi Cathedral † April 19, 2020 · 3 PM The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is a devotion to Jesus Christ based on revelations from the Lord Jesus Christ to Saint Faustina Kowalska (1905–1938), which she recorded in her diary. St. Faustina recorded that Jesus asked her to pray the chaplet and to instruct others to do so. The prayers of the chaplet for mercy are said in order to obtain mercy, to trust in Christ's mercy, and to show mercy to others. Kowalska was canonized April 30, 2000, and Pope John Paul II ordained the Sunday within the Octave of Easter as the Sunday of Divine Mercy. "Jesus said to St. Faustyna one day: 'Humanity will nev- er find peace until it turns with trust to Divine Mercy'. Divine Mercy! This is the Easter gift that the Church receives from the risen Christ and offers to humanity." —Pope John Paul II, April 22, 2001 Divine Mercy Eugeniusz Marcin Kazimirowski (1873–1939) oil on canvas (1934),Hail Krawów, PolandTrue Body Permanently enshrined at the Divine Mercy Sanctuary Latin, 14th century STUTTGART Vilnius, Lithuania Trans. From the beginnings of human history, people have designated particular locations as sacred and traveled to them in a pilgrimage. When Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire in 314 CE, Christian shrines emerged very soon at martyrs’ tombs and other places of historical importance in development of this religion. The distribution of physical relics created many of the Christian shrines in Western Europe. Popular belief concerning Mary began to evolve upon Jesus’ death; and in turn, most of these beliefs were adopted into Roman Catholic doctrine and became Mariology or Marianism, the veneration of Mary. In Western Europe, a number of shrines were created from an apparition of Mary to local people, and with any shrine’s approval by the institutional Church, it gained an international reputation and following; shrines not granted this approval by the Church have remained less internationally well-known and mostly locally based.

  • The Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy
The Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy The Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy are both mantras, which are prayers based on repetition. The mantra becomes a constant companion, reminding you of your steadfast relationship with God and helping you navigate all the distractions your mind and heart may be prone to. By using a mantra, you can tap into and even expand your inner resources of peace, patience, strength, and faithfulness. A mantra can be repeated silently as you go about your regular activities. There are an amazing number of opportunities for this prayer practice during a day, such as while standing in the elevator, in your car, on a walk, or while waiting. All you need is about 20 minutes to pray either the Rosary or the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. The Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy are prayed with the aid of rosary beads, but both can be prayed without. One difference in method between the two is that the Rosary has a focus for each decade, called “the mysteries,” which are significant events in the life of Jesus. Each decade of 10 beads is focused on one of the mysteries, a source of meditation during the mantra. Both the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy can be offered for particular intentions. Praying the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy takes only a few short minutes wherein we acknowledge God as our Merciful Savior, acknowledge God as our source of life, acknowledge our own sinfulness, intercede for the world, pray for God's saving help, and reflect on Jesus' passion and resurrection that opened up a whole avenue of Mercy for us.

  • Taken from Our Catholic Prayers
Taken from Our Catholic Prayers THE DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET The Divine Mercy Chaplet is a beautiful prayer composed by our Lord Himself to help foster devotion to His Divine Mercy! He taught it to a Polish nun, Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska (pictured at left) in 1935, in one of His many private revelations to her. Jesus conveyed to her our need to ask for His mercy, to be merciful ourselves, and to trust in Him completely. Mercy is a key part of the love that He has for us and wants us to show each other. The reference to our Lord’s Passion serves as a poignant reminder of just how much God loves us that He would allow His only son to suffer and die for us, so that, as we hear at Mass, “sins may be forgiven.” Jesus wasn’t revealing a new doctrine about forgiveness to Saint Faustina. Scripture abounds with references to God's mercy. Among a number of examples, we read in the Psalms that “the Lord is gracious and merciful” (Ps 145:8). In the Our Father (printed above) we ask God to forgive us as we forgive others. Christ introduced His parable of the Unmerciful Servant in Matthew’s gospel by instructing His followers to forgive others “seventy times seven times” (Matt 18:22). And, you might also remember His famous proclamation in the Sermon on the Mount that “blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matt: 5:7). What was new was that our Lord wished Saint Faustina to help establish an apostolic movement of Divine Mercy so that even the most hardened sinners would know that they could obtain His mercy if they asked for it with a spirit of true repentance.

Barbara Christian, MBA Apostle of Divine Mercy “Mercy is love that seeks to lessen the misery of others.” Dr. Bryan Thatcher What Is Divine Mercy, And Who Is St. Faustina? y Divine Mercy is that God loves us and He wants us to know that His mercy is greater than our sins. God wants us to call upon Him with trust and receive His mercy, so that it may flow from us to our fellow brothers and sisters. In this way, we all share in God’s eminent love. y Sr. Faustina was a young nun with the congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Cracow, Poland, during the 1930’s who received extraordinary revelations from Our Lord Jesus.
