Prayer to the whose relics are enshrined by Fr. James R. Orr. Nihil Obstat: Dr. James Gretz: Published with the ecclesiastical approbation of the Most Rev. David A. Zubik, D.D., Bishop of Pittsburgh: given Nov. 1, 2014 The Thirteen Tuesdays: the History of the Tradition

Saint Anthony died on Friday, June 13, 1231, and was buried on the following Tuesday, June 17. Tradition states that Anthony’s funeral procession became a triumphal celebration in light of the many great miracles which took place. On that day, the blind saw, the deaf heard, the mute spoke, and cripples walked again. All those who called upon the name of Anthony received God’s help and mercy. In gratitude for these many signs and wonders, the faithful have since set aside each Tuesday to honor the saint. through the centuries, crowds have gathered at his tomb espe‐ cially on Tuesdays, and the faithful of Padua profess that what‐ ever is asked of God through Saint Anthony on this day will be granted. The practice of Tuesday devotion spread widely in Italy and other parts of Europe, and gained momentum in the years to come. In 1617, a noble woman of Bologna sought a particular favor from God through the intercession of Saint Anthony, Her prayer was that she and her husband might be blessed with chil‐ dren. One night, the saint appeared to her in a dream and said, “Visit my shrine in the church of the Franciscans for nine Tuesdays, and your prayers will be heard.” After follwing this directive, the woman’s prayer was answered. News of this blessing received through prayer spread far, and the practice of nine Tuesdays’ devotion traveled with it. Eventually the number of Tuesdays was increased to thirteen, commemorating the date of Saint Anthony’s death. A plenary indulgence is granted in any church on any Tuesday or Sunday of the year if one performs some prayerful devotion there in honor of Saint Anthony, with the intention of continu‐ ing this devotion for thirteen Tuesdays or Sundays. The follow‐ ing conditions are recommended each time: sacramental recon‐ ciliation, reception of the Holy Eucharist, and prayer for the intentions of the Pope. This devotion has traditionally been cel‐ ebrated communally here at Most Holy Name Parish on the thirteen Tuesdays preceding the feast of Saint Anthony. 1 Hymn to Saint Anthony Verse 1: How good it is, O glorious Saint, In these our troubled days, To look upon your holy life. Your kind and gentle ways. How good it is in hour of need, to call upon your name, And find compassion ever there, Your love always the same.

Refrain: O comforter, Saint Anthony, Before the Lord we pray: Your love and faith inspire us now, To live the gospel way.

Novena Prayers Prayer to Saint Anthony Beloved Anthony of Padua, Doctor of the Gospel, light of the Church, true follower of Saint Francis of Assisi, help us to have a true and solid devotion to you, following the example of your life in the work of God and His people. Hold before us the holy scrip‐ tures, the source of your Wisdom, and be to us a teacher of the ways of God and the gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Help us to cultivate the love of God in our hearts. then, as you said, the King of Kings will rule over us and cleanse our hearts from sin and selfishness, and we shall love our neighbor as you taught. May your 2 spirit of prayer and chastity make us faithful to the vows of our Baptism, the vows of our religious life. Be an apostle and teacher to the people of our time, that we may live the Gospel of Christ with you, spreading the spirit of that Gospel to all men and women. Pray that the spirit of Christian love and unity may fill all the people of God, and bring all His children together again as one flock with one shepherd. Amen. Prayer for Special Favors Dear Saint Anthony, one of the gentlest and kindest of saints, your love for God and virtue and charity toward your fellow man made you worthy on earth to exercise miraculous powers. Nothing was impossible for you. Encourged by this thought, we ask you to obtain for us the special favors we seek at this time. (Silent pause for petitions) O kind and holy wonder‐worker, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, present our petitions for these favors sought through our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Restoration of What has been lost O blessed Saint Anthony, the grace of God has made you a powerful intercessor in all our needs, and the patron for the restoration of things lost or stolen. To you I turn today with heartfelt confidence.

3 You are a counselor of the confused, comforter of the troubled, healer of the sick, refuge of the fallen. You have helped countless children of God find what they have lost‐‐not just things of this world, but more importantly, things of the spirit‐‐faith, hope, and love.

I come before you with confidence. Please help me in my present need, (Silent pause for petitions) and ask that God return to me what has been lost if it is His holy will. Amen. A Prayer of Thanksgiving O glorious wonder‐worker, Saint Anthony, father of the poor and comforter of the troubled, you have come to my assistance with great kindness and have strengthened me abundantly. I give you my heartfelt thanks. Accept my offering and with it my promise to live always in the love of Jesus and of my neighbor. Continue to grant your protection, and obtain for me the grace one day to enter the kingdom of heaven, to join with you and all the saints in praising God for his everlasting kindness. Amen. (During the observance of the thirteen Tuesdays prior to the feast of Saint Anthony, the readings and prayers to each Tuesday may be included at this point in the novena.)

22 Chaplet of Saint Anthony

During the 19th century, some people in Padua began to recite the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be, thir‐ teen times in thanksgiving for favors granted after having prayed the Responsory of Saint Anthony. This is known as the or Chaplet of Saint Anthony. It is composed of 13 groups of three beads each. On the first bead of each three is said the Our Father, on the second, the Hail Mary, and on the third, Glory Be, and so on.

Saint Anthony’s Bread

One of the oldest of the devotions to Saint Anthony, this tra‐ dition began prior to 1263, when a young child drowned near Saint Anthony’s Basilica, which was then under construction. His mother sought the aid of Saint Anthony, and promised that if the child were restored to life, she would provide a measure of grain equal to the boy’s weight to be given to the poor. The boy was restored to life. In some places arose the custom of placing children under Saint Anthony’s protection. Some parents would then donate grain equal to the child’s weight to feed poor patients in the city hospital. More wealthy parents might donate silver to be used to purchase bread for the poor. In the late nineteenth century, the custom of donating money for the poor in honor of Saint Anthony began. From the Church of Saint Anthony in Rome, bread is distributed daily to the poor. It is indeed a fitting sign of faith and of devotion to the generous spirit of Saint Anthony that the faithful pledge and contribute alms to the poor in the name of “Saint Anthony’s Bread”.

23 Portiuncula Indulgence The Portiuncula Indulgence, i.e., a plenary indulgence, can be gained by the faithful (also applicable to the Poor Souls) from noon August 1st to midnight August 2nd ‐ or, if transferred by the ordinary, from noon of the Saturday to midnight of the Sunday following August 1st. Personal conditions: confession, communion, one visit each day to a church or chapel enriched with this privilege, and recitation of the Our Father and the Creed for the intention of the Holy Father. Some other prayer, or an ejaculation, must be included. By the special favor of the Holy See, the Saint Anthony Chapel enjoys the privilege of the Portiuncula Indulgence. This favor was granted on February 13, 1908, as a concession “in perpetuum.” www.saintanthonyschapel.org
