We will be staying in Estoril, just minutes from Lisbon. The Estoril Coast is frequently called the “Land of Two Springs” or the “Coast of Kings.” One of the wealthiest areas of Portugal, it is noted for the many historical and world-famous figures that have chosen this resort as a place to relax. Estoril is home to Europe’s largest casino, Casino do Estoril, which is featured in one James Bond movie and was also the inspiration for “Casino Royale.” Average daytime temperatures are in the mid-60’s in March, April, and November, and low 70’s in May and October, so the region has great weather for sightseeing! OUR 9-DAY/7-NIGHT PORTUGUESE RIVIERA TOUR ITINERARY: DAY 1 – BOSTON~LISBON: Depart Boston’s Logan International Airport for Portugal (via possible intermediate city) with full meal and beverage service, as well as stereo headsets, while in flight. DAY 2 – LISBON: Upon arrival at Lisbon Airport, we will meet our Tour Escort, who will help us transfer to our hotel, the Hotel Estoril Eden (or similar), for check in. The remainder of the day is at leisure for shopping, individual sightseeing, or relaxation. This evening we will have a welcome Sangria Party and dinner at the hotel followed by an orientation. (D) Website: http://www.hotelestorileden.pt/?p=home&lang=en DAY 3 – LISBON: After breakfast, we will drive to Alto da Serafina Belvedere for a glimpse over Lisbon. In the Belém District, we will visit the Royal Coaches Museum (the largest collection in the world) and the Jerónimos Monastery (a marvel of stone lacework). We will also stop at the monument to Henry the Navigator and the Tower of Belém. Then it is back to the center of the city to visit the Tropical Greenhouses. Dinner and overnight. (B, D) DAY 4 – FÁTIMA~BATALHA~ ALCOBAÇA~NAZARÉ~ÓBIDOS: After breakfast, today we are off on a tour to many of the picturesque and significant towns north of Lisbon. First, we’ll visit Fátima, one of the most significant centers of Catholic pilgrimage. From there, we will visit the Batalha Monastery and on to the town of Alcobaça, for a visit to a 12 th century monastery and the tombs of Pedro and Inês. After lunch (on our own) in Nazare, a picturesque and colorful Portuguese fishing village, we will continue on the beautiful walled village of Óbidos. Then our return trip to Lisbon will be through the beautiful farming region of Ribatejo. Dinner and overnight. (B, D) DAY 5 – ROMANTIC EXCURSION: QUELUZ~SINTRA: After breakfast, we will visit the Palace of Queluz, with its 18 th century halls and gardens. Next we will drive to Sintra, one of the farming centers of Portugal, where we can visit the Royal Palace. Continuing along the coast, we pass through the seaside resort of Guincho Beach, the fishing village of Cascais, and cosmopolitan Estoril. Dinner and overnight. (B, D) DAY 6 – ÉVORA: After breakfast, we head east to the museum town of Évora, whose roots date back to ancient Roman. Its historic district center has been designated as an UNESCO International Heritage Site. Our guided sightseeing will include many of the town’s most important and famous landmarks. Dinner and overnight. (B, D) DAY 7 – ARRÁBIDA~SESIMBRA~SETUBAL: After breakfast, we will cross over the Tagus River and catch a glimpse of Lisbon from the Christ in Majesty statue. Next we visit a famous wine cellar in Azeitao, where we will have the opportunity to sample some of the wines. We then stop in Sesimbra, a fishing town and seaside resort, where we can enjoy the splendor of its ancient castle (photo). Our tour then heads across Árrabida Mountain, providing us with a breathtaking view of Setubal. This evening, we will travel to Bairro Alto in Lisbon to enjoy a Fado Night of Portuguese traditional singing and guitar music. Return to our hotel for overnight. (B, D) DAY 8 – ESTORIL: After breakfast, the remainder of the day is at leisure for some last-minute shopping, individual sightseeing, or just relaxing. Lunch is on our own today. We will gather at our hotel this evening for a special Farewell Sangria Party. Overnight. (B, D) DAY 9 – LISBON ~BOSTON: After breakfast and hotel check-out, we will transfer to the Lisbon Airport for our return flight (via possible intermediate city) to Boston, with full meal and beverage service, as well as stereo headsets, available in flight.     Regional Dynamics and Social Diversity – Portugal in the 21st Century Teresa Ferreira Rodrigues Introduction hrough its history Portugal always presented regional differences concerning population distribution, as well as fertility and mortality trends. Local T specificities related to life and death levels reflect diverse socioeconomic conditions and also different health coverage. We will try to diagnose the main concerns and future challenges related to those regional differences, using quantitative and qualitative data on demographic trends, well-being average levels and health services offer. We want to demonstrate that this kind of academic researches can be useful to policy makers, helping them: (1) to implement regional directed policies; (2) to reduce internal diversity; and (3) to improve quality of life in the most excluded areas. Our first issue consists in measuring the link between Portuguese modernization and asymmetries on social well-being levels1. Today Portugal faces some modera- tion on population growth rates, a total dependency on migration rates, both exter- nal and internal, as well as aged structures. But national average numbers are totally different from those at a regional level, mainly if using non demographic indicators, such as average living patterns or purchase power2. The paper begins with a short diagnosis on the huge demographic and socioeco- nomic changes of the last decades. In the second part we analyze the extent of the link between those changes and regional convergence on well-being levels. Finally, we try to determine the extent of regional contrasts, their main causes and the rela- tionship between social change and local average wealth standards, as well as the main problems and challenges that will be under discussion in the years to come, in what concerns to health policies.

Under Salazar's New State it was passed over in favour of earlier periods from which that nationalist regime sought to draw inspiration; subsequent historians preferred to concentrate on social and economic developments to the detriment of the difficult evolution of Portuguese liberalism. This picture is changing, thanks to an awakening of interest in both contemporary topics and political history (although there is no consensus when it comes to defining political history). The aim of this article is to summarise these recent developments in Portuguese historiography for the benefit of an English-language audience. Keywords Nineteenth Century, History, Bibliography, Constitutionalism, Historiography, Liberalism, Political History, Portugal Politics has finally begun to carve out a privileged space at the heart of Portuguese historiography. This ‘invasion’ is a recent phenomenon and can be explained by the gradual acceptance, over the course of two decades, of political history as a genuine specialisation in Portuguese academic circles. This process of scientific and pedagogical renewal has seen a clear focus also on the nineteenth century. Young researchers concentrate their efforts in this field, and publishers are more interested in this kind of works than before. In Portugal, the interest in the 19th century is a reaction against decades of ignorance. Until April 1974, ideological reasons dictated the absence of contemporary history from the secondary school classroom, and even from the university curriculum.

This paper aims also to identify the principles and the theoretical foundations that have determined Agache urban vision for Lisbon City and its Territory. Finally, this paper aims to demonstrate that Alfred-Donat Agache methodological framework has applied Frederick Le Play socio-economic scientific approach. Such approach has informed the construction of a ‘civic’ urbanism that will be identified and analyzed. Two main goals seem to have guided Agache work at Costa do Sol: (i) the fully urban analysis of the city, throughout its social, economic, geographic and urban conditions (past and present) and (ii) the need to expose such analysis to the city’s inhabitants.
