  • Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Howard Hawks, USA, 1953)
Contexts and Histories of Adaptation: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Howard Hawks, USA, 1953) By Rosie Gibbs Research at the Bill Douglas Centre: This essay was written for a third year English Studies module called ‘Film and Literature: Textual Transformations,’ in which I had to examine up to five artefacts on a chosen film adaptation from the collection at the Bill Douglas Centre. The objective was to study the way in which these artefacts comment on the contexts and histories of, in my case, Howard Hawks’ Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. With such a rich and wide variety of artefacts to choose from, from sheet music to cigarette cards to mirrors and stocking packaging, the Bill Douglas Centre made this project a thrilling and enlightening one. In the end, selecting just five artefacts was the hardest part. With direct access to nearly all the centre’s material, I was able to look through first hand old newspaper clippings and magazines such as Picturegoer from the 1950s, providing a unique insight- often unavailable in books, into contemporary representations and opinions of, for example, Marilyn Monroe and her films. I was amazed at how these non-literary artefacts informed me about the film’s contexts and histories, but as the saying goes: ‘Pictures speak a thousand words.’ Studying relevant artefacts from the Bill Douglas Collection will definitely make all the difference for anyone writing an English or Film Studies essay in the future. On the surface, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is kinda anti-feminist – we have the stereotypical dumb blonde and the smart brunette, the dumb blonde is a On Television blatant golddigger, we don’t get a full Bechdel Test pass (almost all of the conversations are about men), and the lm is shot with the intention of emphasizing the lead actress’ sexiness as much as possible (with a few obligatory male gaze shots). Yet I was asking myself why I love this now almost 60 year old lm so much. I looked a little deeper, and realized that there is a lot in Awards this lm for feminists to celebrate – not only the stars, Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell, but also the characters’ friendship, their mutual sexual liberation, and how http://www.btchflcks.com/2012/09/women-and-gender-in-musicals-week-the-surprising-feminism-of-gentlemen-prefer-blondes.html#.WfqdBhNSxp9 1/6 11/2/2017 Women and Gender In Musicals Week: The Surprising Feminism of ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ | Bitch Flicks a little song named “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” is not as much about being materialistic as it seems.

In particular, I am thankful for assistance from Dr. Susan Hegeman, Dr. Kim Emery, and Dr. David Leverenz. Their instruction, comments on writing, and professionalism elevate my work. I thank my mother, Donnetta Reynolds, and my grandmother, Loetta Kopita, for their continued support of my education and growth. Their generosity in the material, emotional, and spiritual realms sustained me during this process. Also, I would like to thank my colleague Melissa Mellon for encouragement. Friends like Joanna Zwanger, Allison Knight, Kim and Glenn Sloman, Jennifer Kryshka, Ian McCain, and those unnamed contributed to my sanity and my thought process during this project. I thank my partner and fiancé, Krystian Lagowski, who continually supported me through my graduate work, in all its facets. His humor, good nature, and positivism were essential checks to my sometimes serious nature—a silly joke goes a long way. I thank all those women, and men, before me who insisted on women’s rights, including the right to meaningful and productive higher education. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS page ACKNOWLEDGMENTS…………………………………………………………….iv
