We continue this ancient Church Liturgical tradition in Saturday’s Morning Prayer to welcome the gift of a new day, as well as in Friday and Saturday Evening Prayer (sometimes known as Vespers) to celebrate the Light that shines through the night’s darkness. 24 BIENVENIDO

Hna. Edith Prendergast, RSC Directora

A Blessing Prayer For Light for the 2007 Los Angeles Religious Education Congress

Light cannot see inside things. That is what the dark is for: Minding the interior, That the searching of our minds Nurturing the draw of growth Be equal to the oblique Through places where death Crevices and corners where In its own time turns into life. The mystery continues to dwell, Concealed in fugitive light. In the glare of neon times, Let our eyes not be worn When we are confined inside By surfaces that shine The dark house of suffering With hunger made attractive. That moonlight find a window.

That our thoughts may be true light, When we become false and lost Finding their way into words That the severe noon-light Which have the weight of shadow Would cast our shadow clear. To hold the layers of truth. When we love, that dawn-light That we never place our trust Would lighten our feet In minds claimed by empty light, Upon the waters. Where one-sided certainties Are driven by false desire. As we grow old, that twilight Would illuminate treasure When we look into the heart, In the fields of memory. May our eyes have the kindness And reverence of candlelight. When we come to search for God, Let us first be robed in night, Put on the mind of morning To feel the insurgency Of light that will slow Inside the stillness Of a found world.

PRELUDE Song at the Center Marty Haugen Refrain Arena

Verse 1 In the east, the place of dawning, there is beauty in the morn, Here the seeker finds new visions as each sacred day is born; All who honor life around them, all who honor life within, They shall shine with light and glory when the morning breaks again. Verse 2 In the south, the place of growing, there is wisdom in the earth, Both the painful song of dying and the joyful song of birth; As the earth gives up her lifeblood so her children’s hearts may beat, We give back to her our reverence holy ground beneath our feet. Verse 3 In the north, the place of wisdom, there is holy darkness deep, Here the silent song of mystery may awake you from your sleep; Here the music still and holy sounds beneath the snow and night In the ones who wait with patience for the coming of the light. Verse 4 In the west, the place of seeing, there is born a vision new Of the servant of the servants, who proclaimed a gospel true; Let the creatures of creation echo back creations prayer, Let the Spirit now breathe through us and restore the sacred there.

SENDING FORTH We Will Be The Light John Angotti and Noelle Garcia Verse 1 Let your light shine, let us walk in the light. Let your love flow, help us to know what is right. Let your graces fall to renew us all and we will delight as your people, O God. (Refrain) Refrain

A There’s a night to hide the darkness of sin. T But if we love one another and pardon our brother we can let delight U back in, light the fire once again! (Refrain) R Verse 3 A light to all nations, what we need to be. D Look to the testaments, all the experts do agree. A When you love in the darkness you can never be free. Y I’m a living example of having sight but couldn’t see. My humanness and stupidness got in the way. I was busy and dizzy, couldn’t tell the night from day. Blinded by my actions and my personal gain, didn’t know today’s pleasure reaped a treasure of pain. But just like Paul, knocked off my horse, the Holy Spirit entered, put me back on my course. I said, “Mirror, mirror, mirror up on the wall, show me the way before I take a nasty fall.” Then I closed my eyes; before me did I see the Light of the World. Jesus came to me! The sacrament and sign’s a friend of mine. I knew that I was walking the borderline. So now that I’m aware that my ambition is my mission, to be the light of Christ I’ve now been commissioned. A light to all nations is what we need to be. Look to the testaments; he can set you free! (Refrain)

Some come with partners, some come with friends; Some come with children, some come alone, Called together by your word. Broken, dreaming, rich and poor, All come streaming through the door. (Refrain)

Nurturing peace while mending our rifts, Great is our need, but greater your gifts. Some come for comfort, some come assured, All come challenged by your word. Strangers, foes, and friends unite, All come streaming into light. (Refrain)

Summoned by Christ to seek out the lost, Knowing the path will lead to the cross, Banker and debtor, prisoner and judge, Called to table by your word. Bearing simple bread and wine, All come streaming here to dine. (Refrain)

Build us for healing, build us for rest, Welcome revealing Christ is our guest. Some come as prophets, some come to nurse, Sent for service by your word. Let the teeming nations come streaming here to sing as one: (Refrain)

2007 CONGRESS THEME SONG Stand in the Light /Permanecer en la Luz John Angotti and Kevin Paige Refrain/Estribillo

Spanish lyrics by Anna Betancourt and Peter Kolar. Copyright © 2007. Published by World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Used with permission.

Verse 1 Light poured out, wraps all creation in beauty and warmth, in love and compassion. We stand in awe before our incredible God, whose glory resounds, whose brightness transcends beyond the heavens and the earth.

Verse 2 Heaven’s brightness flows from me to you. As we share in creating the S world anew. We build the kingdom with forgiveness and love, so we U might live in peace all wars will cease and we reveal the radiance of N Christ.

Rap (English) We dare to be the brightness in the places of creation where we find the lost and lonely and bring them to salvation. Standing in the light we see it takes communication to spread the truth revealed in words and full participation.

Invited by the Word and inspired by the Spirit, the call to realize we must Arena reveal it. Once you know the truth, once you’ve seen the light there’s no way to deny that lies hide in the night.

Be vigilant and diligent throughout all your days and connect with the fact that the light is here to stay. Create a new norm that it’s time to transform from blindness to sight so that we live in peace and right.

Walking in the darkness means walking with desires for earthly kinds of things that will end up in the fire.

Be true to the truth because it tells the real story. Stand in the light, we reflect God’s glory.

70 2007 Religious Education Congress ENDOWMENT FUND The Religious Education Endowment Fund was established by the Office of Religious Education to support the on- going training and formation of religious education leaders, particularly by making scholarships available for cate- chetical leaders to pursue graduate studies. It is our hope that every Director of Religious Education will be given the opportunity to receive a master’s degree in Religious Education/Religious Studies. Any additional contribution through mail-in registrations and those who registered online could contribute to this Fund. As of January 29, 537 people responded with contributions totaling $6,521. We sincerely appreciate and acknowledge their contributions. The fund is currently enabling 15 students to pursue a master’s degree in Religious Education, and you will be happy to know that several have already graduated!
