WELCOME TO TO CONGRESS WELCOME Cardinal Roger Mahony In gratitude for your leadership and support of Congress for 25 years. May the path before you be blessed in abundance. 2 2011 Religious Education Congress WELCOME General Info March 2011 I are delighted to welcome you to our annual Religious Education Congress. This won- derful annual gathering affords us the opportunity to renew our discipleship with Jesus Christ, our membership in the Body of Christ, His Church, and our commitment to the ministry of evangelization and catechesis. This year’s theme, Hold Firm...Trust!, is inspired by the Scriptures for the Second Sunday of our Lenten journey. We are drawn into the extraordinary love of God who accompanies us on our faith journeys, steadies us in times of challenge, and leads us to the fullness of the Paschal Mystery. Trusting in God’s presence and power, we walk with confi dence through seasons of dark and of light. The Keynote and addresses, the many workshops, and the varied Liturgical Celebra- tions offered throughout the weekend are a rich source of renewal for us all. We are gratifi ed and encouraged that so many of you take advantage of the extraordinary opportunities to deepen your lives in Jesus Christ, to reaffi rm your love for the Church, and to commit yourselves to proclaiming the Good News of Jesus for the whole world. Your leadership and faithful participation are key to the ongoing growth and well-being of our parish communities. Please be assured of my gratitude and encouragement as you continue to be involved in this essential ministry of catechesis in our Church. Asking God’s blessings upon you, your families and parish communities, and with every best wish, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, His Excellency Most Reverend José H. Gomez Archbishop of Los Angeles www.RECongress.org 3 WELCOME 4 2011 Religious Education Congress WELCOME General Info March 2011 It is a great joy for me to welcome you once again to our uplifting and inspiring Religious Education Congress. This outstanding weekend offers many opportunities for re-energizing our lives and enriching our ministries. The Congress theme – “Hold Firm…Trust!” – echoes the words of the prophet Jeremiah who likens the one who trusts, to a tree by the waterside that has no fear even in a year of drought. Nourished at its roots by the rich soil, it grows and fl ourishes in all seasons. Heartened by this promise we move forward, buoyed up with energy for the journey. As you will recall, a Religious Education Endowment Fund has been established in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for the ongoing education and formation of Directors of Religious Education, Adult Educators, Young Adults and Youth Ministers. The fund is currently enabling 20 students to pursue a master’s degree in Religious Education. Your gift offering at the 2010 Congress Saturday night liturgies together with online contributions added $44,702 to this fund. We thank for your on-going generosity.

  • Bishops Urged to Embrace Social Media to Evangelize Effectively
Bishops urged to embrace social media to evangelize effectively Social media is not only here to stay but should be recognized and used as a “new form of pastoral ministry,” U.S. bishops were told Nov. 15 in their annual meeting. “Social media is proving itself to be a force with which to be reckoned. If not, the church may be facing as great a challenge as that of the Protestant Reformation,” said Bishop Ronald P. Herzog of Alexandria, La., a member of the bishops’ Committee on Communications, in an address to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Baltimore. Bishop Herzog noted that although social media has been around for less than 10 years, it lacks the “makings of a fad” and is “causing as fundamental a shift in communication patterns and behavior as the printing press did 500 years ago.” “I don’t think I have to remind you of what happened when the Catholic Church was slow to adapt to that new technology,” he told the bishops. “By the time we decided to seriously promote that common folk should read the Bible, the Protestant Reformation was well under way.” He delivered the committee report on behalf of its chairman, Auxiliary Bishop Gabino Zavala of Los Angeles, who was unable to attend the meeting because he was undergoing back surgery. Bishop Herzog used Pope Benedict XVI’s description of a “digital continent” to describe the multiple media platforms used today and likewise compared it to new mission territory. “We digital immigrants need lessons on the digital culture, just as we expect missionaries to learn the cultures of the people they are evangelizing.
