McConnell Charlotte E. Abrams Geology/Geophysics Section, HLTR SUBJECT: REPORT DESCRIBING ACTIVITIES WHILE ATTENDING THE SOUTHEASTERN SECTION OF THE GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA IN COLUMBIA, SC CONFERENCE SCHEDULE AND ITINERARY: April 7 - 8: Technical sessions in Columbia, SC (Attachment 1). PURPOSE OF CONFERENCE: Our attendence at this conference was required so as to allow us to present two papers: Evidence of pre-Grenville crust in the Sauratown Mountains anticlinorium western North Carolina: U-Pb studies: by McConnell, Sinha, Hatcher and Feyn. - Metamorphosed felsic to intermediate volcanic rocks and their association with voicanogenic gold deposits in the northern Piedmont of Georgia: by McConnell and Abrams. In addition, one of us (McConnell) was an invited chairman for an Economic Geology session. SUMMARY OF PERTINENT POINTS: Attachment 1 provides a listing of the abstracts presented at this meeting. Those presentations checked were attended by either one or the other of us. Most of the presentations attended involved tectonic and economic geologic aspects of the southern Appalachians and, therefore, were peripheral to the geology of Yucca Mountain. However, with respect to tectonics, many of the abstracts involved middle crustal aspects of dextral fault motion. Developing a perception of what may be occurring at mid-crustal depths is useful in understanding what may be occurring at depth in the Walker Lane fault zone of central Nevada. 8806090321 880606 d; PDR WASTE SEGSA - 2 - The economic geology presentation by Ririe entitled "Characteristics of rocks with high-alumina minerals associated with gold deposits" used examples from the western United States including the Au/Ag deposit at Goldfield.
