  • One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages” Exhibit
John Read is the creator and curator of the “One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages” exhibit. A freelance cartoonist, John also teaches cartooning to children and is the publisher and editor of Stay Tooned! Magazine, considered the trade journal of the craft. The Comic Mode The comic strip provides a colorful and humorous respite from the serious and often tragic news that precedes it. There are many reasons for reading the “funny pages”; from the basic need to be entertained, to the desire to escape for a moment into what seems a playful combination of a joke and a sequence of images that illustrate the nonsense and play that generates it. Yet, what really constitutes the “comic” in a comic strip? Are they simply funny, as in Blondie, Garfield or Hagar the Horrible? Or do we sense underlying tones of irony, satire, political and social commentary as evidenced in Doonesbury, Non Sequitur, and Between Friends? How are we to understand the double entendre, the sting of wit or the twist of the absurd that infuses so many contemporary comic strips? It would seem that as in dreams, there are many levels to the comic mode. On the first take, the superficial or manifest appeal generates a smile or laughter. But as with many dreams and good jokes, there is the second take, a latent need to establish or defy meaning as embedded within the structure of the images themselves. The paradox or playfulness of the comic strip partially lies in discovering the truth in the nonsensical aspects of day-to-day living.

230 W. Ridgecrest Blvd. ● P.O. Box 2001, Ridgecrest, CA 93556 ● 760-375-8456 Vol. 35, No. 1 January 2020 To see our schedule of events, visit us at hsumd.org or on Facebook at HSUMD When “Doc,” the well-remembered B-29 from China Lake’s boneyard, made a return visit to Inyokern last October, it seemed like a good opportunity to revisit some of Doc’s history in the local area and bring out some of the stories involved in moving and saving Doc. So, for our January meeting, we’ll have Mark Pahuta present two short videos and Doug Lueck relate his part in moving Doc from China Lake’s Baker Range to Inyokern. We invite anyone else with a tale to tell about Doc to come to the meeting and share. The meeting will start at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, January 21, at the Historic USO Building, 230 W. Ridgecrest Blvd. Mark Pahuta will present two videos that he co-photographed and edited documenting two B-29 aircraft that were saved from destruction at China Lake. The first video (actually a ten-minute 16mm film) 299 Foxtrot (1976) tells the story of a B-29 sitting for years in the China Lake boneyard waiting to be dragged out on the ranges to serve as a target for an air-to-ground weapon test. Instead, a group of aviation historians managed to intercede and refurbish the plane for eventual museum display. The aircraft flew out of China Lake’s Armitage Field on June 15, 1976. The second video, made in 1998, documents the B-29 “Doc” and its 4-day journey from Baker Range to Inyokern.

Circles and Circuses: Carnivalesque Tropes in the Late 1960s Musical and Cultural Imagination DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University by Stefan Firca , B.M., M.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Professor Arved Ashby, Advisor Professor Graeme Boone Professor Danielle Fosler-Lussier Copyright by Stefan Firca 2011 Abstract Circus, fairground, carousel, carnival imagery is everywhere during the late 1960s: in cover art, song lyrics, band names and song titles, music criticism, names of music venues, festivals, movies, literature. From circus tents to clowns, from jugglers to magicians, from carousels to parades, an entire carnivalesque lexis seems to be at play in what is generally termed “psychedelia.” The current study attempts to read and offer “thick description” (Geertz) of this vocabulary as part of a larger cultural and countercultural imagination, and integrate musical manifestations of the period (popular psychedelia and avant-garde / experimental music) in a semiotic network of metaphoric representation. If language is nothing more than a chain of metaphors (Lakoff), it is nevertheless true that we often take such metaphors as “rock ’n’ roll circus,” “song-carousel,” “riot of sound” for granted, since they are so widespread and culturally shared that an explanation of their meaning may appear pedantic. But what do these word-images actually mean? What is the range of their connotations? What is the relationship between them? Why are they so frequent in the late 1960s? And how are these tropes translated or suggested musically? One possible answer to the last question involves the broad concept of circularity , emblematic for the psychedelic era: a round melodic motive or harmonic progression, ii a cyclic phrase articulation, a motoric-recurrent riff, a spiraling or whirling waltz in triple time.
