NEWSLETTER to PARENTS and CARERS April 2014 NEWSLETTER TO PARENTS and CARERS April 2014 Trinity School HEADTEACHER’S LETTER Dear Parents and Carers Easter as a movable feast in the church‘s calendar has produced a peculiar holiday this year – here we are breaking up on a Wednesday, with the actual Easter weekend not quite in sight yet. No sooner is it done than we are back, again on a Wednesday – but St George‘s Day, and Shakespeare‘s 450th birthday (allegedly...). A late Easter means a long Spring Term and in the packed pages ahead you will see details of a huge amount of activity which has been going on, and no small amount of success. Well done to all for keeping this going over the course of a big half term, and for the many fine performances in sport, music, and drama, debating and writing, Young Enterprise – and lots more. All of which means that we are probably sending the Trinity Leisure Centre details out to your separately with this Newsletter, rather than as part of it – but I hope that you do have a chance to see what is on offer here and to consider taking part if you do not do so already. This term we say farewell to Mrs Brenda Graham, who has served the school so well for many years as the technician in our Art department. She said to the staff in her leaving speech that it has been her ideal job, and we have certainly seen that in the joy she has brought to her work, and her sustained helpfulness and creativity in the role. Parents and carers are most likely to have met Brenda at the Art exhibitions each year, when she would have been helping the students throughout the day to present their work. We shall miss her greatly and thank her for all of her service to the school, wishing her well for a long and healthy and happy retirement. Thanks to all of you for your support over the past term. There have been many parents‘ evenings, tutor evenings, open evenings for the Sixth Form Centre, concerts and performances, trips to Manchester and Switzerland, and soon to The Netherlands and Ski-ing, and we have been fund- raising for Uganda, making cakes (not necessarily all the students‘ own work...), matches and practices ... and it has been very good to have your company and support in these important things in the life of the school. A late Easter means the sudden arrival of exams as soon as we return. Best wishes for all of our students who are preparing for them over the holiday – make sure you get some good rest and refreshment as well. Well done to Year 9 students for the way in which they approached the exams running up to the end of this term. All good wishes now for Year 11 and Year 13 students in particular as their written papers start, and to Year 10 and to Year 12, who have fewer papers but still the same pressures. We hope that they manage those well indeed and enjoy good papers and good success in due course. And now for Easter – the most important and exciting weekend in the history of the world! I hope that you are able to get some good rest and holiday over the days ahead, and best wishes to everyone for a Happy Easter. Yours sincerely Headteacher 1 CHAPLAINCY Thought for the Day We have drawn this term to a close by considering the Easter story and its meaning. Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar. It celebrates the resurrection from the dead of Jesus, three days after he was executed. The Easter story is at the heart of Christianity. Next half term we are unfortunately only able to have one week of assemblies due to exams. This does however, provide more time in forms for topics to be discussed in more depth and with more creativity. On April 23rd we celebrate St. George‘s day and take the opportunity to consider Britain as a ‗Christian country‘. Following on from this we will examine Christianity in other cultures around the world and how it looks different from our own experiences of Christianity. We are also lucky enough to be welcoming a team, with several young people, from the Diocese of Northern Argentina into Trinity on the week beginning the 19th May. The team are involved in urban mission work in Argentina and will be talking to our pupils about the work they do as Christians to help other people. The themes for our Thought for the day for the coming half term are as follows: Week 1 w/c Monday 21st April Christianity in Britain. Week 2 w/c Monday 28th April Christianity across the world. Week 3 w/c Monday 5th May 50 Things of Wonder. Week 4 w/c Monday 12th May 50 Things of Wonder. Week 5 w/c Monday 19th May Christianity in the world. Hope Carlisle On Tuesday 8th April, we welcomed church leaders from around the city for their planning meeting for the Bank Holiday weekend activities in the six areas of the city. It was very good to have them in school, and to be part of the plans for the exciting weekend of events planned for the start of May. You can catch up with further details on the website: www.hopecarlisle.org/news Memorial Football Match On Wednesday 9th April at 3.00pm at the Sheepmount, Trinity hosted an annual memorial football match.. The Memorial match is in memory of David Murray, a student of our school and Nathan Cuthbertson, a student of St Aidan‘s School, in Sunderland, who died in Afghanistan. Mrs Jen Milligan Chaplain 2 INFORMATION School Attendance Students continue to ‗smash‘ our attendance records. Last year, attendance to the end of March stood at 93.4%. This year, it stands at 95.5%. We are really pleased and thank parents and carers for their support in encouraging good habits of attendance. Instrumental/Singing Tuition Fees 2013/14 A reminder to parents/carers who are not paying by monthly standing order payments: the third instalment is due to reach us by 29th June 2014. Please note that if payments are not up to date unfortunately students may not be allowed to continue with lessons. Payment can be made by standing order, credit/debit card either with ParentPay or by phoning the Finance Office. Payments by cash and cheque are still acceptable, cheques should be made payable to ―Trinity School‖. If you have a query or you require further information please contact the Finance Office on 01228 516051 ext 215. Mrs A Larking, Finance Manager Payment for School Meals Please ensure you give your children the correct change for topping up their school meals account at the revaluers as change is not given. Parents/carers are reminded that topping up can also be done via parent pay with a credit or debit card. Mrs A Larking, Finance Manager Parking While we understand that parking in Strand Road is limited, there are a number of Trinity students with mobility problems whose parents/carers need to have access to the Blue Badge parking area. We are asking for parents and carers not to use the car park when dropping off or collecting students. Please also avoid the double yellow lines and the designated school entrance areas on Strand Road. Rather, we ask parents/carers to pick up your children a little away from the school site, perhaps towards the Newman School end of Strand Road, or in one of the approach roads leading off Victoria Place. For those travelling west or north, a pick up point near Wickes or DFS could avoid the congestion in Georgian Way/Victoria Place. We would greatly appreciate your co-operation with this request. Thank you. FORTHCOMING EVENTS Year 12 Geography Residential – Co. Antrim Twelve Year 12 Geography students will be travelling to Northern Ireland on 9th April. They will spend 4/5 days based at Whitepark Bay on the stunning North Antrim coast near to Bushmills, home of the famous Irish whiskey for over 500 years. The students will spend their revision days exploring the coastline and the city of Belfast, including visits to the Titanic Museum and Queen‘s University. They will be looking in particular at rural rebranding and work being done to bring investment into rural areas. Trip to Passo Tonale On Friday, 11th April, 49 Trinity students and 6 staff will travel to Passo Tonale in the Italian Alps for a week‘s skiing and snowboarding. We wish them bon voyage and look forward to hearing about their adventures on their return. Uganda Project We would like to thank everyone for all the support they have given us with this project. As the date for our departure gets nearer we are continuing our fundraising so that we are able to donate as much as possible to our partner schools in Uganda. The next event is our Quiz Night on Saturday 26 April at Scotby Village Hall from 7.30pm. – there are still tickets left for this event at £5.50 to include the quiz, food and an Auction of Promises. The event was blessed with great weather which Cumbrian Clubs Embrace Rugbyforce added to an excellent experience for all. On the pitch the 4 male and 5 female teams battled it out playing some excellent rugby, with Millom 1 Primary Schools in Regional Tag Finals and Kendal taking the male and female titles respectively. Off the pitch Lakes College Student Touch Festival the social element was in full flow all weekend, a very successful beer festival, entertainment from the ‘Holborn Hillbillies’, Fancy Dress and Live Carlisle RFC Complete Touch Prog. Sport from the National Teams. Thanks to all at Millom RUFC for the outstanding effort , making the weekend a huge success for all involved.     LANCASHIRE COUNTY RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION ANNUAL REPORT 2018-19 THE SECRETARY’S OPENING REMARKS As ever my first job is to thank our President for the great work he has done this season. Dave Clarke has been unfailing in his club visits and is a true supporter of Rugby. He has been instrumental in the formation of the ADM Lancashire Leagues which has helped many of our clubs play more local matches. This has seen a number of players staying within the game. With the frequency of his more than daily telephone calls to discuss some issue in the game my children now do a very good impression of the Ginger Ninja from Wigan. Both Dave and myself are indebted to Mrs President, Anne. As well as being his secretary, Anne has deputised for me in meetings and acted as the minutes secretary in our general meetings. Thank you both. To Rugby, both our Senior Mens and Womens XVs failed to reach their finals which was not for want of trying, all our representative players should be thanks for the effort they put in to pulling on the Red & White hoops at the end of a long tiring club season. We will be back. Thanks to Mark Nelson, Steve Rigby, John Greenwood and all the backroom team who work hard to provide these opportunities. Our 20s team did make their day out in Twickenham where they went down to a very strong Yorkshire team, I’m sure we will be seeing more of these lads progressing through to our Senior XV and more success in County Rugby.

This is one of the County Finals taking place between now and the summer, providing a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire hundreds of children and young people across the county to take part in more competitive school sport. Today’s competition is for the leading secondary school teams that have been successful in their respective district competitions. The Cumbria Rugby Football Union would like to see the development of disability rugby in schools expand and it is hoped that this event will encourage more young people with learning difficulties to play and enjoy competitive rugby and be used as a catalyst for ongoing participation and development. Competitors develop many skills by taking part and we would hope that ultimately many are enthused to continue to explore competitive sport both in school and in local clubs.
