  • Lena Adelsohn Lijeroth, Swedish Minister of Culture Inugurates Sweden’S Participation in the 2013 Bologna Children’S Book Fair
LENA ADELSOHN LIJEROTH, SWEDISH MINISTER OF CULTURE INUGURATES SWEDEN’S PARTICIPATION IN THE 2013 BOLOGNA CHILDREN’S BOOK FAIR About fifty Swedish authors and illustrators will be in Bologna from 25 to 28 March 2013 for the Children’s Book Fair, the world’s largest fair for this sector. Sweden, the first Scandinavian to be Guest of Honour, will present the theme “Children’s Right to Culture.” Sweden will offer a programme of events and a special exhibit to be inaugurated by Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth, Swedish Minister of Culture. “It is a great honour to inaugurate such an important event, and it will be very interesting to see Swedish literature for children and teenagers in an international context,” she says. “In addition to allowing Sweden to present its literature for children and teenagers, the Fair is the ideal place to discuss ways to attract children to reading,” she continues. As Guest of Honour, Sweden will present a large exhibit on contemporary Swedish illustration. The exhibit, covering over 300 m2, offers a group of 31 illustrators selected by a jury of experts, with panels focusing on the perspectives of children. Many of these artists – including Olof Landström, Sven Nordqvist, Eva Lindström, Pija Lindenbaum and Ilon Wikland – are very well known. Others are young artists just starting their career: in fact, a third of the illustrators were born in the 1980s. The exhibit will be accompanied by a large catalogue with information on the illustrators. The Book Fair will also offer seminars and presentations of many Swedish authors, including Sara Elfgren Bergmark, Mats Strandberg, Ulf Stark, Martin Widmark and Moni Nilsson.

  • International Swedish Classics and Contemporary Voices
SWEDISH BOOKS FOR YOUNG International Swedish Classics and READERS Contemporary Voices Ut i natten. Marcus Gunnar Pettersson Cropped illustration From The Magical Dust (see page 6) Welcome! This publication is for those of you who are interested in publishing Swedish children’s and YA literature, but aren’t quite sure where to get started. It’s also for you if you have already published something Swedish, but would like to do more. And if you’re simply curious? Well, it’s for you too. Within these pages are a selection of titles taken from the treasure chest of Swedish children’s and YA literature. The authors presented here have already been translated into a number of languages and have reached readers in different parts of the world. Each writer is presented via a brief introduction and examples of their books that have been published in translation. For each book, details of the original publisher and representation are included. At the very back you’ll find the contact details for these Swedish children’s and YA publishers and agents, as well as information about the grants that you can apply to us for. Good hunting! Susanne Bergström Larsson, Head of Swedish Literature Exchange, Swedish Arts Council Note: The selection is based on nominations from Swedish agents and publishers who sell international rights relating to Swedish children’s and YA literature. They were invited to nominate a number of authors and books that have already been disseminated internationally. In order to ensure an even spread of publishers and agents, genres and age categories, a team at the Swedish Arts Council then made the final selection from the nominations.

  • 67Th IFLA Council and General Conference August 16-25, 2001
67th IFLA Council and General Conference August 16-25, 2001 Code Number: 128-162-E Division Number: III Professional Group: Libraries for Children and Young Adults Joint Meeting with: - Meeting Number: 162 Simultaneous Interpretation: - Strong Girls and Bright Colours- current themes in Swedish picture books Elisabeth Lundgren Director, Department of Culture and Libraries Kungalv, Sweden Strong girls and bright colours characterise many Swedish picture books in recent years. The girls are visible and active and there are lots of wise mothers too. The picture book may deal with very difficult subjects, like death, as well as with pure nonsense. Sweden has many good illustrators who work experimentally with colours and shapes. Some are influenced by cartoons and they use their expressions widely, humorously, artistically and are highly innovative. One of the themes in Swedish picture books that I want to emphasise is the deep experiences and feelings that we all meet in life, no matter who or where we are - essential emotions like jealousy, bad conscience or the fear of not being good enough. This theme is difficult to mirror, but many authors/illustrators have succeeded quite well within the wide concept of the picture book. Some put the stress on the words and some on the pictures, but the strong expression is made by words and pictures together forming an ikonotext. Strong Girls – the gender perspective I am glad to say that there are plenty of strong, brave, even striking, girls in the picture books of recent years; girls who take the initiative, who don’t back off even if they are afraid.

  • Where Children Grow © Ingrid Vang Nyman / Saltkråkan Where Children Grow
SWEDISH CHILDREN’S LITERATURE Where children grow © Ingrid Vang Nyman / Saltkråkan Where children grow ‘Good literature gives the child a place in the world and the world a place in the child’, said Astrid Lindgren. With the exhibition Where children grow, the Swedish Institute in collaboration with the Swedish Institute for Children’s Books is hoping to establish a dialogue on the role and international distribution of children’s literature. International exchange, ensuring that books are translated and reach readers in different parts of the world, furthers our awareness and understanding of one another. Children’s literature is important in Sweden. Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, the world’s largest award for children’s and young adult literature is administrated by the Swedish Arts Council. Also, literature for young readers is extensively researched in Sweden. Support and assistance is provided to both researchers and an interested public by the Swedish Institute for Children’s Books, which is a national centre for children’s and young adult literature. In addition there is the Centre for the Study of Children’s Culture at Stockholm University, which organises courses, symposia and research days and publishes a series of scientific essays focusing on culture for children. One challenge is to develop access to literature that all children can feel a part of. It is also important that children and young adults feel motivated to read. As the Convention on the Rights of the Child states, children have the right to information and the right to take part both in public life and in cultural life and the arts.
