/()·-I 1!/Js- RESOL Whereas, with 38 Top 40 hits, selling over 45 million records ru1d starring in over 12 Hollywood movies, Pat Boone is not only an performer a11d a11 entertainer, he is a11 America11 icon; and Whereas, born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1934 and raised in Nashville Tennessee, Pat Boone bega11 recording in 1954 for Republic Records a11d made his first hit covering Fats Domino's "Ain't That A Shrune" in 1955; and Whereas, in his rising success, Pat Boone hosted his own network television show, The Pat Boone Chevy Show, authored numerous books including his number one best-selling book, Twixt Twelve and Twenty and becrune a Rock a11d Roll legend by covering R&B hits like "Tutti Frutti", "Long Tall Sally" originated by Little Richard a11d "I Almost Lost My Mind" by Ivory Jones Hunter; and Whereas, after his accomplishments in Rock ru1d Roll, Pat Boone made his mark in Gospel music touring with his frunily, promoting their albums; The Pat Boone Family and The Family That Prays and founding the record label Lion & Lrunb Records; a11d Whereas, Pat Boone became so popular Hollywood crune knocking, offering him his first big screen role in the musical "Bernadine;" a11d Whereas, after his success with "Bernadine" his teen idol status was cemented. He quickly followed it up with "April Love" (1957), "Mardi Gras" (1958), "Journey To The Centre of The Earth" (1959) & a remake of "State Fair" (1962); a11d Whereas, later in his career he released a heavy metal cover album entitled, In A Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy. Clyde McPhatter was among thefirst | singers to rhapsodize about romance in gospel’s emotionally charged style. It wasn’t an easy stepfor McP hatter to make; after all, he was only eighteen, a 2m inister’s son born in North Carolina and raised in New Jersey, when vocal arranger and talent manager Billy | Ward decided in 1950 that I McPhatter would be the perfect choice to front his latest concept, a vocal quartet called the Dominoes. At the time, quartets (which, despite the name, often contained more than four members) were popular on the gospel circuit. They also dominated the R&B field, the most popular being decorous ensembles like the Ink Spots and the Orioles. Ward wanted to combine the vocal flamboyance of gospel with the pop orientation o f the R&B quartets. The result was rhythm and gospel, a sound that never really made it across the R &B chart to the mainstream audience o f the time but reached everybody’s ears years later in the form of Sixties soul. As Charlie Gillett wrote in The Sound of the City, the Dominoes began working instinctively - and timidly. McPhatter said, ' ‘We were very frightened in the studio when we were recording. Billy Ward was teaching us the song, and he’d say, ‘Sing it up,’ and I said, 'Well, I don’t feel it that way, ’ and he said, ‘Try it your way. ’ I felt more relaxed if I wasn’t confined to the melody.
