Jamaica High Court Throws Out Vybz Kartel Appeal Pdf Published On April 03, 2020 03:05 PM Staff Consortium | April 03, 2020 03:05:45 PM 0 Vybez Kartel KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Popular dancehall entertainer Vybz Kartel, on Friday lost his appeal against his murder conviction. After a near two-year wait, the Court of Appeal , handed down a judgment affirming the murder conviction of the popular entertainer. The court also upheld the convictions and sentences for dancehall artiste Shawn Storm and two other men, Kahira Jones and Andre St John. The appeal was heard by President of the Court of Appeal Dennis Morrison as well as Frank Williams and Patrick Brooks. In April 2014, Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, Shawn Storm, given name Shawn Campbell, Jones and St John were convicted for the August 2011 killing of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams at a house in Havendale, St Andrew. The judge said he would be eligible for parole after serving 35 years. His co-convicts were also given mandatory life sentences and have been ordered to each serve 25 years before becoming eligible for parole. They were all sentenced to life in prison by since retired High Court judge Justice Lennox Campbell. He ordered that Kartel serves 35 years in prison before he becomes eligible for parole. Storm, Jones and St John were ordered to serve 25 years each before being eligible for parole. In fact, "My Crew" is lightweight stuff lyrically, with Vybz toasting champagne and rattling off porno video titles at a Southern, syrup-sipping, hip-hop pace, but it's also a highlight as Skull bangs the timpani and drops quirky bits of Vybz in full ecstasy.

Narco-narratives and Transnational Form: The Geopolitics of Citation in the Circum-Caribbean Jason Frydman [email protected] Brooklyn College Abstract: This essay argues that narco-narratives--in film, television, literature, and music-- depend on structures of narrative doubles to map the racialized and spatialized construction of illegality and distribution of death in the circum-Caribbean narco-economy. Narco-narratives stage their own haunting by other geographies, other social classes, other media; these hauntings refract the asymmetries of geo-political and socio-cultural power undergirding both the transnational drug trade and its artistic representation. The circum-Caribbean cartography offers both a corrective to nation- or language-based approaches to narco-culture, as well as a vantage point on the recursive practices of citation that are constitutive of transnational narco-narrative production. A transnational field of narrative production responding to the violence of the transnational drug trade has emerged that encompasses music and film, television and journalism, pulp and literary fiction. Cutting across nations, languages, genres, and media, a dizzying narrative traffic in plotlines, character-types, images, rhythms, soundtracks, expressions, and gestures travels global media channels through appropriations, repetitions, allusions, shoutouts, ripoffs, and homages. While narco-cultural production extends around the world, this essay focuses on the transnational frame of the circum-Caribbean as a zone of particularly dense, if not foundational, narrative traffic. The circum-Caribbean cartography offers 2 both a corrective to nation- or language-based approaches to narco-culture, as well as a vantage point on incredibly recursive practices of citation that are constitutive of the whole array of narco-narrative production: textual, visual, and sonic.

This study represents 24 months of participant observation, participant interviews and artifact analysis in St. Thomas, Jamaica. This study provides analytic descriptions of how identity development is experienced by youth in St. Thomas during the era of Gaza vs. Gully. Chapter one outlines the statement of the problem and the research questions. Chapter two frames the literature and theoretical frameworks utilized in the study. The methodology of the study and the case for the utilization of ethnography is explained in Chapter three. The social, cultural, and political context of St. Thomas as well as the Gaza vs. Gully era is discussed in Chapter four along with the introduction of the four main participants of the study. Chapter five utilizes examples and experiences from the lives of the four main participants to analyze the features of identity development in this specific “time and space”. Conclusions about and implications of the data from the participant observation presented will continue to be addressed in Chapter six.
