Onze onderzoeksvraag hierbij was: “Wat fascineert mannen in seksrobots?”. VII Chloé De Bie, Sex with robots. Master thesis presented to obtain the degree of Master in de seksuologie, June 2012. Promotor: prof. dr. Peter Rober and co-promotor: prof dr. Paul Enzlin Abstract In this thesis we have tried to better understand what fascinates men in sex robots. We started with a literature study and found that within the scientific literature very little has been written on this topic. Therefore we have tried to find clues within the fields of technology and sexology. We discussed different types of robots and the precursors of the sex robot (like the sex doll and sex machines) after which we discussed the available literature on sex robots. We finished with an overview of possible perspectives in the future. In addition to this literature study, we conducted an exploratory qualitative study. We organised focus groups with six heterosexual men aged between 20 and 40 years who were interested in or had experience with sex toys. Our research question was: "What fascinates men in sex robots?". Subsequently, we analysed the data on the basis of a thematic analysis. The fascination of men regarding sex robots was focused around the tension about being “real/not real” as a woman of flesh and blood. The participants were, despite the modern evolution of robots, still disappointed in the current state-of-the-art of sex robots. One wishes that they would resemble more to a real woman. At the same time, however, the participants were convinced that sex robots will never be able to replace a real woman nor that they should. The robot must be different from a woman. Nevertheless, one sees a number of advantages to sex robots (e.g.: one cannot be put aside by the partner, and there is no risk getting sexually transmitted diseases). One sees opportunities for certain groups of people, for example those suffering from low self esteem. Moreover, one wonders what the implications of (sex-)robots for society will be. One finds it important that the use of sex robots remains within a certain niche of people because one suspects that it is psychologically unhealthy to only have sex with a sex robot. Some are even convinced that the (sex-)robotics industry should be prevented. We can conclude that there are still a lot of research opportunities within this domain. This thesis does not only provide us with information on the current knowledge of sex robots, but it also raises questions about human identity and, by extension, about human experience of love and sexuality; and about what we do expect of our sex partner and what insoluble tensions we will have to deal with during our lives. Wie verändern Laien unsere visuelle Kultur?‹“ Universität Siegen 5.-7.6.2008, in: www.medienamateure.de Karin Bruns All by Myself Technologies of the Self in Porn Blogs and Web Forums In the pop song “All by Myself”, the American singer Eartha Kitt describes the pleasure felt in self-withdrawal as well as the dangers it brings.1 Since the song was first released in 1976 by Eric Carmen, it stands as a symbol for the ambivalent feelings arising from being famous, being a star, and loneliness.2 Again and again, Eartha Kitt sung “All by Myself”, adding variations and including passages with a seemingly very personal touch. The last time was in a New York revue theater, shortly before her seventieth birthday in 2008. The confession manifest in the lyrics of this version of the song and the related self-publishing of a star suffering under the pressure of publicity refer to the marginalized position of a female afro-American artist. The 1982 documentary film “All by Myself” (USA/D, director: Christian Blackwood) follows this interpretation. The refrain “I wanna be all by myself” is staged over and over again, and the film, just like at the close of the song, reverses it at the end (“don't wanna be all by myself anymore”).

  • Is Cyberprostitution Prostitution?
Campbell 1 Draft: Circulation by author permission only Is Cyberprostitution Prostitution? New Paradigm, Old Crime Rapidly tracing a trajectory remarkably similar to that more slowly traced two decades later by the term “cyberspace,” 1 Michel Foucault’s conceptual unfolding of the term “heterotopia” shifted in the space of a year from the métier of language to that of space. In the 1966 introduction to The Order of Things , “heterotopia” functions first and foremost as a disruptive force in and of language : Heterotopias are disturbing, probably because they secretly undermine language, because they make it impossible to name this and that, because they shatter or tangle common names, because they destroy “syntax” in advance, and not only the syntax with which we construct sentences, but also that less apparent syntax which causes words and things (next to and opposite each other) to “hold together.” …[Heterotopia] desiccate speech, stop words in their tracks, contest the very possibility of grammar at its source; they dissolve our myths and sterilize the lyricism of our sentences. (xviii) 1 The word “cyberspace” first appeared the work of science fiction writing William Gibson, and was widely popularized with the 1984 publication of Neuromancer . Reflecting back on his invention of the neologism in Mark Neale’s 2000 documentary No Maps for These Territories , Gibson commented: All I knew about the word "cyberspace" when I coined it, was that it seemed like an effective buzzword. It seemed evocative and essentially meaningless. It was suggestive of something, but had no real semantic meaning, even for me, as I saw it emerge on the page.

  • Guys and Dolls Steven Connor
Guys and Dolls Steven Connor An essay prompted by Silent Partners: Artist and Mannequin from Function to Fetish, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Tuesday 14 October 2014-Sunday 25 January 2015, Musée Bourdelle, Paris, 31 March-12 July 2015. The doll has become a figure for the objectification of women, especially in the form of the sex doll, which is routinely taken to be the image of the women reduced to a condition of pure passivity. All the things it seems necessary to say about sex dolls are said in a paragraph near the beginning of Anthony Ferguson’s The Sex Doll: A History: the female sex doll represents woman in her most objectified form. The female sex doll is man’s ultimate sexually idealized woman. It is never more than the sum, of its fully functional parts. A woman rendered harmless, it is immobile, compliant, and perhaps most importantly, silent… Perhaps the real function of the sex doll is to provide a simulacrum – a representation, an image, a semblance (of reality), a phantom, or a sham. The sex doll offers verisimilitude, the appearance of truth. The aim of the image is to displace reality. The evidence suggests that there are those who would prefer a simulacrum to living flesh, just as there are those who seek mute subjugation in the sexual partner. (Ferguson 2010, 5) And that, said John, is that. We can count on this kind of thing being said reliably, soothingly, over and over. Have no fear: nothing I can possibly manage to say is likely to make any difference to this.

By: Samantha Lee On a brisk fall morning, I sat down at my desk, a steaming cup of Earl Grey by my side. I turned on my laptop. And I proceeded to search for the worst sex toy I could find. By “worst,” I meant “most defective.” More specifically, I was looking for a sex toy that would prove a point, it being: some of these things, which one might occasionally stick into one’s body, should not be stuck into one’s body. Wayward products have been known to break, or poison, or electrocute one – sometimes during use. The most efficient way to find the world’s ickiest toy: on the Internet’s lawless consumer frontier, Amazon.com. I started scrolling. While it comes as a surprise to no one that most adult homo sapiens have engaged in the formal act of copulation, research indicates that more of us than we think play with toys, too.
