1.0 Joining Largs Bay Sailing Club (LBSC) 1.1 Welcome! Welcome to LBSC! We are delighted you have decided to try sailing and join us at the LBSC. We hope this handbook helps you to navigate your way around, particularly if you are a family who is completely new to sailing.

Please familiarise yourself with the LBSC website which has lots more information https://www.largsbaysailingclub.org.au/home/

1.2 Paperwork Firstly, we need you to complete the relevant paperwork which is available from the sign in desk: • Club Registration • Medical Forms • Payment – club fees + training program fees if applicable.

When you register your child at a sailing club they will receive an Australian Sailing (AS) Number.

Your child will need this number if they compete in an event or regatta.

1.3 New Participants LBSC offer a free 2-week introductory program which enables kids to try out the program before committing to membership. If you know another child who may enjoy learning to sail, please let us know so we can arrange an introductory session.

1.4 Fees When you register with the Club you are required to pay annual club registration fees which is in addition to junior training fees (note, training is heavily subsidised by membership fees).

There are a range of membership options for you and your family to consider, from single child membership to membership for the whole family. The membership forms are located on the LBSC website https://www.largsbaysailingclub.org.au/registration/

1.5 Parent Participation At LBSC we welcome and encourage parents to be involved in your child’s activities. In particular, assistance with preparing, launching, retrieving and pack up of boats is most appreciated.

While participating in any of our training programs a parent or their nominee needs to be available on the club premises at all times.

Sessions may be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances such as poor weather. We will endeavour to contact families but please check the facebook page for updates.

3.0 Keeping in Touch The best way to keep in touch with LBSC is via the newsletter and via Facebook. The Training Coordinator will also send out notices regarding the training program via email from time to time so please ensure the club has your email address

4.0 Saturday Junior Sailing Routine https://www.largsbaysailingclub.org.au/sail-training/

4.1 Arrive Time Saturday Junior Training sessions commences at 9am so you need to arrive around 15min prior, to allow time for the children to register and be changed and ready to go.

4.2 Sign on & Sign off Please ensure your child checks in at the Sign In desk when you arrive. Your child is also required to sign off when they are off the water. Your child’s safety is important to us so please ensure that you adhere to this simple requirement.

4.3 Setting up your boat All kids are required to set up their boat on arrival.

Club boats will be allocated to children on the day by the fleet instructor.

Children will need parent help with boat set up if new to sailing. There are plenty of other parents on the lawn so please ask if you are lost or unsure what to do. It is not the responsibility of the instructors to prepare your child’s boat. In Tackers 1 and 2, the boats are often shared so all children and parents in the groups help with boat setup.

4.4 Briefing When boats are set up the Instructor will bring the kids together for a briefing before heading out on the water. As a parent you are welcome to listen to the briefing to hear what it is the kids are learning.

Briefing times and content can vary depending on the group. In Tackers they are generally a longer, more structured lesson.

4.5 On the Water Following the briefing it is time to take the boats to the water. Kids are encouraged to pull their own boat down to the water, but parent help is always welcomed. Once on the water parents can stay on the beach or wait at the club house, ready to return to the beach when it is time to bring the boats back. The Club has coffee and other refreshments available at the canteen.

Kids are supervised by instructors on the water and on the beach. A volunteer (wearing a hi-vis vest) on the beach will always be present with a hand-held radio to communicate with the instructors on the water and the clubhouse. If you have any questions while your child is on the water, you should approach this person.

4.6 Packing up the Boats Once off the water boats need to be hosed down on the grass and excess water sponged out. Again, if you are unsure what to do, look around or ask another parent to help you out. Sails need to be disconnected, hosed down and put away. Again, it is not the responsibility of the Instructor to put your child’s boat away – even if it is a club boat.

New cleaning procedures may be introduced this season due to COVID-19 and guided by Australian Sailing. Instructors will notify accordingly.

4.7 Signing Off Before heading to the canteen for chips after a morning on the water please ensure your child has signed off at the desk upstairs. The registration desk cannot close until all children are accounted for.

7.0 Categories of Junior Sailing Kids new to sailing will commence in Tackers 1 and will progress through the categories based on their ability and assessment undertaken by their instructor in discussion with the Head of Junior Sailing.

7.1 Tackers 1, 2 3

Tackers is a fun introductory, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7-12 yrs, delivered at recognised Tackers Centres, predominantly who are affiliated sailing clubs. Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience or

club membership to participate. All the equipment, including the boats, is provided.

At LBSC there are three levels that kids can progress through:

Tackers 1 – Having Fun

Kids sail in pairs in small boats. It’s a great way to meet new friends and kids have the chance to sail with others in their group.

Tackers 2 – Tricks & Techniques.

If kids are confident, they can sail a boat on their own with lots of support, supervision and encouragement from the Instructor and Assistant Instructors.

Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast!

Once kids are confident in their own boat, kids will have the chance to further develop their skills under the tuition of Instructors and Assistant Instructors.

Each level involves 20 hours of participation.

7.2 Opti Green Fleet The fun doesn’t stop when kids finish Tackers 2. Most Tackers Centres have ‘Green Fleet’ programs for the kids to progress into. Green Fleet is a type of introductory fun racing where kids learn how to go around a racecourse with kids of similar ability, where the main focus is on enjoyment. If kids want to do more racing, they move from Green Fleet into club racing.

7.3 Opti Intermediate (Silver) Silver fleet is not offered at LBSC but is combined with Green fleet.

Intermediate Fleet builds on the skills learnt in the Green Fleet program working towards enabling sailors to compete at a Club level on their own. The program builds on the basic concepts of boat handling and racing introduced at Green Fleet.

7.4 Opti Open (Gold) Suitable for sailors who can handle their boats in a range of conditions and efficiently sail a triangle / trapezoid courses (from light to heavy winds) and who want to race competitively. The Gold Fleet will train on weekday

evenings with a squad coach. It is expected that the sailor has competed in either one or more Australian Sailing youth events and/or State Championships.

7.5 Cadets & 420’s Once the kids have worked their way through Opti’s or grown too big, the Cadet is the next step. The Cadet is a great way to keep sailing and having fun with friends.

For those kids looking for more of a thrill or who have outgrown junior classes the 420 is the perfect class for them. It is a high-performance class perfect for those interested in racing and is a great stepping stone into senior classes.

8.0 Boat Access 8.1 Tackers Largs Bay Sailing Club provide boats for the Tackers program. As described in the earlier section it is the responsibility of each sailor to prepare the boat before sailing and to pack up the boat after sailing.

8.2 Club Boats for Opti Green Fleet Largs Bay Sailing Club have four (4) boats that are used by kids in the Green Fleet. These boats will be allocated to Green Fleet participants on the day by the Green Fleet Instructor.

• Kidz Biz • Pier Pressure • Miss BeHaven • Secret Biz

8.3 Purchasing a Boat At the green fleet stage families are encouraged to consider purchasing a boat. Please ask at the club as there are often secondhand boats available. Alternatively check out the Buy-Sell Optimist Sailing site on Facebook.

10.0 Junior Regattas As soon as the kids are feeling confident in their boats and starting to sail in Saturday afternoon club racing, they may want to attend one of the many Australian Sailing Youth Regattas. Youth Regattas are a great way to bring kids together from clubs up and down the coast. Your Class Association will be able to provide you with the details of upcoming events that you may wish to enter.

Sailing doesn’t have to stop when summer ends, for those who are super keen and don’t mind the cold, the club also runs once a month Polar Bear races through the winter from May to August.

Then there is also the very popular Frost Bite Youth Regatta over the June long weekend and the Spring Regatta both at Goolwa Regatta Sailing club. Another great chance for the kids to get together with their sailing buddies for a fun weekend of sailing.

Remember sailing is for everyone, opportunities are available for all ages to get into sailing. If you are interested, please contact the Commodore.
