BUDDHIST PUBLICATION SOCIETY Newsletter Summer-Fall 1990 No. 16 SELF-TRANSFORMATION It is perhaps symptomatic of the "fallen" nature of the ordinary human condition that few of us pass the fu!! extent of our lives comfortably reconciled to our natural selves. Even in the midst of prosperity and success, grinding notes of discontent trouble our days and disturbing dreams come to haunt our sleep. As long as our eyes remain coated with dust we incline to locate the cause of our discontent outside ourselves—in spouse, neighbour or job, in implacable fate or fluky chance. But when the dust drops off and our eyes open, we soon find that the real cause lies within. When we discover how deeply the cause of our unhappiness is lodged in the mind, the realization dawns that cosmetic changes will not be anywhere near enough, that a fundamental internal transformation is required. This desire for a transformed personality, for the emergence of a new man from the ashes of the old, is one of the perennial lures of the human heart. From ancient times it has been a potent wellspring of the spiritual quest, and even in the secular, life-affirming culture of our own cosmopolitan age this longing has not totally disappeared. While such concepts as redemption, salvation and deliverance may no longer characterize the transformation that is sought, the urge for a radical reshaping of the personality persists as strong as ever, appearing in guises that are compatible with the secular worldview. Where previously this urge sought fulfillment in the temple, ashram and monastery, it now resorts to new venues: the office of the psychoanalyst, the weekend workshop, the panoply of newly spawned therapies and cults: However, despite the change of scene and conceptual framework, the basic pattern remains the same. -

Introduction: The Relation between Truth and Method The publication over the past few years of several new Ddgen transla tions and commentaries highlights the increasing intensification and specialization in English-language studies of the field. The translations now make available two complete versions of the ShObOgenzO as well as numerous renderings reflecting different approaches and emphases of almost all of the most philosophically important fascicles. An assess ment of these can indicate how much progress has been made toward a 128 TRUTH AND METHOD IN DOGEN SCHOLARSHIP “definitive” (thorough and accurate) English edition of DOgen’s masterwork in addition to the obstacles that remain in reaching that goal. -

Ānandajoti Bhikkhu March 2015 5 Introduction In the Book of the Ones in the Numerical Collection (Aṅguttaranikāya, 1.14) there is a bare list of seventy-four monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen whom the Buddha singled out as excelling in a certain spiritual quality they had developed.1 No more information is given about them there, or the circumstances that led up to their being given these positions. -

Telegram From the Consulate at Hue to the Department of State’ Hue, May 9, 1963-3 p.m. 4. Buddha Birthday Celebration Hue May 8 erupted into large- scale demonstration at Hue Radio Station between 2000 hours local and 2330 hours. At 2245 hours estimated 3,000 crowd assembled and guarded by 8 armored cars, one Company CG, one Company minus ARVN, police armored cars and some carbines fired into air to disperse mob which apparently not unruly but perhaps deemed menacing by authorities. Grenade explosion on radio station porch killed four chil- dren, one woman, Other incidents, possibly some resulting from panic, claimed two more children plus one person age unknown killed. Total casualties for evening 8 killed, 4 wounded. ’ I Source: Department of State, Central Files, POL 25 S VIET. Secret; Operational Immediate. Received at 8:33 a.m. 2 At 7 p.m. the Embassy in Saigon sent a second report of the incident to Washing- ton, listing seven dead and seven injured. The Embassy noted that Vietnamese Govern- ment troops may have fired into the crowd, but most of the casualties resulted, the Embassy reported, from a bomb, a concussion grenade, or “from general melee”. The Embassy observed that although there had been no indication of Viet Cong activity in connection with the incident, the Viet Cong could be expected to exploit future demon- strations. -

Together with the commentarial stories that accompany the verses – along with the Jātaka verses and stories – they have formed the backbone of the teaching of Buddhist ethics for well over 2,000 years. -

In this handbook we give you material to study for each area we’ll be studying on the retreat. We will also have some talks on the retreat itself where the team will bring out their own personal reflections on the topics covered. As well as the study material in this handbook, it would be helpful if you could read Sangharakshita’s book ‘The History of My Going for Refuge’. You can buy this from Windhorse Publications. There is also some optional extra study material at the beginning of each section. Some of the optional material is in the form of talks that can be downloaded from the Free Buddhist Audio website at www.freebuddhistaudio.com. These aren’t by any means exhaustive - Free Buddhist Audio is growing and changing all the time so you may find other material equally relevant! The primary purpose of tHe present SNIE is to examine the implications of recent in develo~mentsI South Vietnam for the stability of the country, the viability of the piem regime, and its relationship with the US. ! CONCLUSIONS A. The Buddhist crisis in South Vietnam has highlighted and intensified a widespread and longstanding dissatisfacrbon with the Diem regime and its style of government. If-as is likely Diem fails to carry out truly and promptly the commitments he has made to the Buddhists, disorders will probably ftkre again and the chances of a coup or assassination attempts ag~inst him will become better than even. (Paras. 4, 14) I B. The Diem regime's underlying uneasiness about t~e extent of the US involvement in South Vietnam has been sharpened I by the Buddhist aflair and the firm line taken by the US.
