These films actualize region as a cinematic imaginary through its authenticity markers – caste/ist practices explicitly, which earlier films constructed as a ‘trope’. The paper uses the concept of Heterotopias to analyse the recurrence of spectacle spaces in the construction of Madurai, and the production of caste in contemporary films. In this pursuit, it interrogates the implications of such spatial discourses. Spectacle spaces: Production of caste in recent Tamil films To foreground the study of caste in Tamil films and to link it with the rise of ‘caste- gestapo’ networks that execute honour killings and murders as a reaction to ‘inter-caste love dramas’ in Tamil Nadu,1 let me narrate a political incident that occurred in Tamil Nadu – that of the formation of a socio-political movement against Dalit assertion in December 2012.

Singh, Doctor of Philosophy. ABSTRACT This thesis examines two films – Slumdog Millionaire (Boyle, 2008) and Dostana (Mansukhani, 2008) to explore the circulation of national identities within these films and the circulation of the films themselves within larger discourses of the nation, particularly India. This thesis argues that our current cultural moment require changing understandings of the idea of ‘film’, to include its multiple networks of capital and affect, and a changing understanding of ‘nation’ as materially illustrated in these films. The aim of this thesis is to conceive of a way to understand films as a collection of temporalities, and to map the duration of these temporalities as they reveal the emerging networks of circulation that change the ontology of both film and nation. I also argue that the ‘nation’ is an affective construct, and that ‘nationness’ is the ‘trace’ or ‘residue’ that these films bear. This argument also marks a specific approach to the idea of a ‘nation’ itself that includes more than the boundaries of the state, or the ethnicity of the people, but begins to address the way objects possess certain national traces, particularly within cultural objects such as the arts.

SUDARSAN PADMANABHAN Objective of New India Internship To introduce students of IITs, NITs and other centrally funded institutes to developmental challenges faced by rural areas of India To study how technology could aid in rural development Identified problem areas: health and hygiene (Swacch), energy, water, pollution, agriculture, environmental sustainability and digital governance To make the members of village community, students and researchers stakeholders in creating and disseminating technologies for rural development Create rural technology feed back loop which could evolve into a rural supply chain M.S.
