Abstract Background: Phylogenetic analyses of angiosperm relationships have used only a small percentage of available sequence data, but phylogenetic data matrices often can be augmented with existing data, especially if one allows missing characters. We explore the effects on phylogenetic analyses of adding 378 matK sequences and 240 26S rDNA sequences to the complete 3-gene, 567-taxon angiosperm phylogenetic matrix of Soltis et al. Results: We performed maximum likelihood bootstrap analyses of the complete, 3-gene 567- taxon data matrix and the incomplete, 5-gene 567-taxon data matrix. -

Shealy, Jr. ABSTRACT In 2002 a unique population of Hydatica Necker ex Gray 1821 (Appalachian Saxifrage) was discovered by Patrick McMillan in the upper Piedmont of Pickens County, SC, growing on a low-elevation granite dome within the Nature Conservancy’s Nine Times nature preserve. The plants appeared to be similar to the widespread Hydatica petiolaris (Raf.) Small populations of the Blue Ridge Escarpment (BRE). However, the Pickens County population displays an annual life form and flowers during the late winter and early spring, in contrast to the perennial life forms and late spring through early fall flowerings of the BRE population. -

Technical Memo to Metro HISTORICAL AND EXISTING VASCULAR AND BRYOPHYTE FLORA, FORMER BLUE HERON PAPER MILL, WILLAMETTE FALLS, OREGON CITY, OREGON John A. Christy Oregon Biodiversity Information Center, Institute for Natural Resources, Portland State University and Philip K. Gaddis August 2015 1 Background Willamette Falls has long been a focus of botanical interest, but industrial development at the site has limited public access for over a century. The closure of the Blue Heron paper mill on the south bank of the river, and proposed redevelopment of the site, has given planners an opportunity to revisit this part of the falls and identify its current flora. As part of the pre- construction planning process for public access to the falls, Metro contracted John Christy to document the historical and existing vascular flora on the site, and Philip Gaddis joined us to document the bryophyte flora. For millennia, the falls has been a magnet for fishing, settlement, and more recent industrial development. Photographs by Carleton Watkins show that the south bank of the river at Willamette Falls had been modified for industrial uses as early as 1867. Infrastructure included dams and spillways to create a boat basin, and millraces to power a sawmill, gristmill, and woolen mill. Later, paper mills and electrical generating stations were built on both sides of the falls. These activities concentrated at the falls have impacted all native habitat except vertical cliff faces on basalt outcrops along the river. Significant portions of the shoreline at the Blue Heron site have been modified by fill. Remaining habitat in natural or semi-natural condition includes areas hydrated by tidal action of the Willamette River, areas of seasonal or perennial seepage below spillways and the old grinders, and basalt outcrops with varying exposures. -

July 27, 2016 Portland Plant List 2016 Update – Summary of Changes In mid-2014, the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS), in partnership with the Bureau of Environmental Services (BES), embarked on a roughly two-year process of updating the Portland Plant List (PPL). In late June 2016, changes to the PPL were approved via an administrative rulemaking process by BPS Director, Susan Anderson. This document provides some background on the PPL and summarizes the updates that were made as a part of this effort. The full PPL is available at www.portlandoregon.gov/auditor/34460?a=322280. Background The PPL is a technical and educational document which is used widely by City staff, developers, local natural resource and watershed agencies and organizations, and residents throughout the metropolitan region. The City first published the PPL in 1991 and has updated it several times over the years; most recently in 2011. The Portland Plant List is comprised of two lists and supporting information: the Native Plants List and the Nuisance Plants List. Both plant lists are integral to the City of Portland’s natural resource protection programs and invasive species management strategy. • The Native Plants List includes species that were likely found historically (prior to European settlement) in the Portland area. This list provides information about species’ habitats, flowering seasons, and other characteristics. Only plants from this list may be planted in Environmental Overlay Zones and Pleasant Valley Natural Resource Overlay Zone resource areas. Native plants may be required in the Greenway Overlay Zones as well, and are encouraged elsewhere in the city. -

We conduct ecological research and conserve biodiversity by forging collaborations with scientists, inmates, prison staff, graduate students, and community partners. Equally important, we help reduce the environmental, economic, and human costs of prisons by inspiring and informing sustainable practices. Partnership The SPP is a fruitful partnership with many collaborators. Each partner plays a valuable role in SPP’s science and sustainability programs. The founding partners are Washington Department of Corrections (WDOC) and The Evergreen State College. Most SPP programs involve additional partners such as: - Center for Natural Lands Management - U.S. Department of Defense, Joint Base Lewis-McChord - Washington Departments of Fish and Wildlife and Natural Resources - U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife - Oregon Zoo, Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, Northwest Trek, and Woodland Park Zoo - Community colleges, food banks, animal shelters, farms, beekeepers, and other community organizations within a prison’s vicinity SPP Programs At its beginning we never imagined the vast array of programs that would be started with our DOC partners. ISSN 2153 733X ANNOTATED CHECKLIST OF THE FLORA OF THE SIERRA VALLEY REGION OF SIERRA AND PLUMAS COUNTIES, CALIFORNIA WILLIAM HARNACH P.O Box 28 Calpine, California 96124 [email protected] ABSTRACT The Sierra Valley region of California is unique in that three floristic zones converge in this mountain valley, the Sierra Nevada from the west, the Great Basin from the east, and to a slight degree the Cascade Range from the north. A checklist of the flora includes 93 families, 434 genera, and 1153 documented species; geographic ranges of another 125 species suggest that they also may occur in the area, for a total of 1278 species. Sierra Valley is a large mountain valley located east of the Sierra Nevada crest. The geology of this region is complex but in a simplistic form it is a down-faulted block basin (graben) filled with volcanic ash deposits and lake sediments, similar to Lake Tahoe in geologic origin. This has resulted in an inverted “L” shaped flat basin, with an average elevation of 4900 feet over an area of approximately 208 square miles.
