For Mipic Lovers GUIDE TO THE ERNEST BRADBURY ARCHIVE 1949 Once again there are areas of doubt as to whether an event occurred in 1949 or 1950 but hopefully it will be possible for those wishing to know a precise date to trace an item easily from the entry on the cutting. Material for this year is exclusively from the Yorkshire Post, whose London edition I have used, much \orkshire material is not in this but hopefully the Brotherton and other Yorkshire libraries have Yorkshire editions for those wishing to trace both these and items listed below as missing. This was the year of Sir Adrian Boult’s farewell and of a concert by a 14-year old girl who was to become world famous as the star of The Sound of Music (Julie Andrews). Historians will find as much interest in die Miscellaneous column, including the work of Herbert Bardgett, whose remarkable career as a chorus master has been the subject of a profile in another year by Ernest Bradbury. These are the items I know to be missing:- 3.1 Leeds Parish Church "Messiah"; also Fairy Opera @ YSO concerts 6.1. Shaw not for amateurs says Festival critic 12.3 The Orchestra from Beethoven to Berlioz (book) 23.4 Dutch musicians cheered in Yorkshire 6.5 Yorkshire CAN sing, says Mr.Miles 16.5 Yorkshire Choirs face problems 26.5 The Philadelphia Orchestra 28.5 Books: Red List Music; Musical Uproar in Moscow (Soviets v.coniposers) 28.6 City hears its own new Symphony (Nottingham) 1.8 YSO bring their season to a clone 30.fi Edinburgh Fffltivol chamber nwsic l-9~Swis's orchestra-® Erimlrergh 9 Dunfermline stages a FcstivaLni 10.10. (This World of Ours column)If anyone knows where there are 10 tenors.. 7.2.11 Lct-t L Choral! Snch-.tyin llym ^-^ Prms* For errors and omissions, not least the names of librettists, designers and pioducers, i offer apologies. I should also mention that a composer is seldom mentioned witho jt his work and individual orchestral members are also seldom mentioned. As m years to either side of 1949, cuttings with less precise dates appear after those with precise dates. For Mipic Lovers HAT Is your taste? Opera, W choral boneerts, symphony orchestras, chamber music? Whichever it is, you will find that ERNEST BRADBURY is a wise ffuide a n d a, penetrating critic. , , He combines a rare knowledge of music with a Northern forth rightness in saying what he thinks of performances. His comments recentlv on the future of the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra have drawn support from people in all parts of the County. In the next few days he will be attending concerts of every kind. Look out for what he has to tell you of them in the YORKSHIRE POST the morning paper for Northerners with discriminating tastes. Both men were of similar age, from a similar background and received a similar education. They both had a strong sense of duty, were of similar rank in the army and were respected by the men they led, and both were mentioned in dispatches for their bravery. Poetry provided an important inspiration in their music. George Butterworth wrote no further music after the start of the war and was killed on active service. AUSTRALIAN EPHEMERA COLLECTION FINDING AID SIR ROBERT HELPMANN (1909-1986) PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAMS AND EPHEMERA (PROMPT) PRINTED AUSTRALIANA MARCH 2020 This finding aid lists programs and ephemera which document all aspects of Sir Robert Helpmann’s extensive career as dancer, choreographer, director, and actor in Australia and overseas. Robert Helpmann’s extensive career started with ballet, acting from 1930, and he then emerged as a company choreographer in 1942. He also directed and produced, and worked in opera, film, and musical theatre. Helpmann’s career in Australia with the Australian Ballet, other Australian companies, and in the Old Vic. Co. tour of Australia in 1955 are not included: Material relating to these productions are located under the respective names of the companies he worked with. (For instance, programs relating to Helpmann’s Australian and New Zealand tours of Nude with violin are located within the separate J.C. Williamson General files of the PROMPT Collection.) The Australian Ballet performances that are mentioned here are all duplicates of the same programs found in the Australian Ballet PROMPT collection, which features more of his work with them. CONTENT Printed materials in the PROMPT collection include programs, and printed ephemera such as brochures, leaflets, tickets, etc. Theatre programs are taken as the prime documentary evidence of a performance by Helpmann. In a few cases however, the only evidence for a Helpmann performance is a piece of printed ephemera other than a full program. In these cases the details are in italics. Examples of this occur during part of the Sadler’s Wells Ballet seasons at Covent Garden in 1948 and 1949 in which fold-out brochures give basic daily listings for several weeks of the repertoire to be performed and some of the artists appearing.

We went on to perform Bliss at my music festival ‘FitzFest’, celebrating the area of Fitzrovia in London, where Bliss’ strong links with the BBC and Henry Wood Hall (both based at various times within this district) justified his inclusion in the programme.
