*The charity Maggie’s Cancer Care Centres was started by Maggie Keswick not long before she died of breast cancer. The centres provide places where cancer sufferers and their families can find: clinical help to deal with the often devastating mental effects of the disease; a library of information on how to live with cancer and treat it in a complementary way alongside conventional treatment; and a place to share their experiences with others. Hospitals throughout Scotland, among them Raigmore in Inverness, have requested centres and the charity, which provides a service not available through the NHS, is now expanding into England. Part of the Maggie’s ethos is that a beautiful environment plays its part in healing and architects of the stature of Frank Gehry have designed centres for the charity.
