Nottingham1 , José Roberto Feitosa Silva2 , Maria Elisabeth de Araújo1, 3 ABSTRACT Aspects of the morphology and histology of the testicles of Holacanthus ciliaris were studied in this research. Monthly collections of living fish, totaling 39 males, were carried out between December, 2000 and November, 2001 on the coast of Ceará State, Brazil. The total length of the fish varied between 63.4 mm and 334 mm, the standard length between 50.9 mm and 270 mm, and the total weight between 6,70 g and 590 g. The testicles were bilobed and ribbon-like in shape, with firm texture and coloration varying between transparent and amber. In the histological study, male gametes were found in all espermatogenesis stages along the months of the year. Key words: Holacanthus ciliaris, Pomacanthidae, reef fish, reproduction. RESUMO Aspectos da morfologia e histologia de testículos de Holacanthus ciliaris foram estudados nesta pesquisa. Coletas mensais de peixes vivos, totalizando 39 machos, foram realizadas entre os meses de dezembro de 2000 e novembro de 2001 na costa do Estado do Ceará. O comprimento total dos peixes variou entre 63,4 e 334mm, o comprimento padrão entre 50,9 e 270mm e o peso total entre 6,70 e 590g. Os testículos apresentavam-se bilobulados, em forma de fita, com textura firme e coloração variando entre transparente e âmbar. No estudo histológico foram encontrados gametas masculinos em todos os estágios da espermatogênese durante os meses do ano. -

The highlight was the group’s encounter with a group of 6 Manta Rays while snorkelling. We enjoyed a morning’s excitement as the Mantas appeared and disappeared alongside us, their huge mouths wide open as they fed on the plankton, with all of the group getting fantastic close-up views! Every morning and evening, the group enjoyed a pre-breakfast and pre-dinner snorkel on coral reefs, where the colour and variety of fish was wonderful! Regal Angelfish, parrotfish, sea cucumbers, many different types of butterflyfish and wrasses, Maldive Anemonefish, reef squid, triggerfish, Moorish Idols, both White- and Black- tipped Reef Sharks and Hawksbill Turtles were just a few of the highlights! Back on board, while cruising between atolls, islands and reefs, seven confirmed species of cetacean were seen: several groups of Spinner Dolphins (including one huge group of at least 500), Pan-tropical Spotted Dolphins, both Common and Indo- Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins, plus Fraser’s Dolphins, plus Risso’s Dolphins and two groups of Pilot Whales – the first being very inquisitive and spending an hour with us spy hopping alongside the boat! All in all, it was a wonderful trip that will never be forgotten. -

Commended by Ministry of Climate and Environment. Chapter 1 - Purpose and scope 1. Purpose The purpose of this Regulation is to conserve natural wild species which are, or may become, threatened with extinction as the result of trade. 2. Objective scope This Regulation concerns the import, export and re-export of specimens, alive or dead, of animal and plant species cited in Annex 1. Re-export shall mean export of any specimen that has previously been introduced into the Regulation area. This Regulation also concerns domestic transfer and possession of specimens, alive or dead, of animal and plant species cited in Annex 1. The first and second subparagraphs also concern parts of products that are prepared from or declared as prepared from such species. Hunting trophies are also considered to be dead specimens/ products. Hunting trophy means the whole or recognisable parts of animals, either raw, processed or produced. The first, second and third subparagraphs also concern hybrids. Hybrid means the re-crossing of specimens of species regulated under CITES as far back as the fourth generation, with specimens of species not regulated under CITES. -

Accepted 22 January, 2014 In the present investigation, a total of 5 species belonging to three genera such as Pomacanthus, Centropyge and Apolemichthys were reported from the 10 selected stations of Tamilnadu, south east coast of India. The diversity studies revealed that the species diversity, richness and evenness were comparatively higher at Rameshwaram and Kanniyakumari due to the rocky shore and coral reef ecosystem. Species composition study revealed that the smoke angel (Apolemichthys xanthurus) was found to be dominant group which constituting 57% of total fishes. The results of the present study evidenced that the occurrence and distribution of marine angel fishes were higher in Gulf of Mannar than other region of Tamilnadu. The present findings clearly explained about distribution pattern of marine angel fishes which could be useful for better understanding of the status of its diversity along southeast coast of India and also highlights the need for effective conservation measures of these commercially important marine ornamental fish group. Caldwell, Chair Although social monogamy and biparental care have been extensively studied in birds, mammals, and fish, the evolutionary origins and maintenance of these phenomena are not well- understood, particularly in invertebrate taxa. The evolution of social monogamy is of interest because current theory predicts that both males and females will usually gain more fitness from mating with multiple partners. Furthermore, biparental care should only occur when males and females both gain more fitness benefits from providing parental care than from investing time and energy into mate searching. Given these expectations, under what environmental and social conditions will social monogamy and biparental care arise and do the same conditions maintain monogamy and biparental care on an evolutionary time scale? Long-term social monogamy, which occurs when a male and female pair for longer than a single breeding cycle, has been reported in eight genera of Lysiosquilloid stomatopods. Furthermore, the Lysiosquilloidea also contains the only marine crustacean genus (Pullosquilla) in which biparental care has been systematically studied. This dissertation examines the evolutionary maintenance and origins of both biparental care and long-term social monogamy in the Lysiosquilloidea, using experimental manipulations, ecological surveys, and comparative, phylogenetically-based methods. -
