Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex has been established by Metropolitan Development Authority [CMDA] with an objective of decongesting the central business district. The market is located out of the congested . But at the same time, it is easily accessible to the city’s residents. As highlighted the market complex is located adjacent to Chennai moffusil bus terminus and is connected to both the Central and railway stations and Chennai International Airport through highways.

The market complex development has been planned in three phases over an area of around 295 acres. In the first phase, the wholesale market for perishables has been developed over an area of around 60 acres.

Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex has around 3154 shops where vegetable, fruit and flower is sold and is one of the largest markets in Asia. The market has four discrete blocks; two for vegetable and one each for fruit and flower market. Approximately one lakh people are visiting the market complex daily for trading purpose, subsequently more vehicles are also entering into the market and it is expected to increase significantly during peak festival seasons.

The developed market complex has good infrastructure facilities including well designed shops in various sizes; truck bays, wide heavy duty roads for easy movements of goods. The market is provided with adequate power and water supply, proper sanitation facilities, drainage and sewerage facilities etc.

MARKET MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Market Management Committee [MMC] has been constituted as per the specified commodities (Regulation of location) Act 1996 so as to give necessary legal protection to the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex. The MMC is an Autonomous Functioning Body that oversees the daily activities in the market.

Tamil Nadu Government has recently constituted a Market Management Committee as per the G.O. MS. No.136, Housing & Urban Development [UD – III (I)] Department, dt.12/4/20007 with the following Members headed by Member Secretary, CMDA as its Chairman and other official, Non official members including the traders’ representatives.

Function of MMC

The KWMC is being maintained by the MMC from its inception i.e. from December 1996. The Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex has entrusted with the task of smooth operation with in the market complex and its maintenance.

The main functions of MMC are as follows:

1. Day to day maintenance of the market complex viz. garbage cleaning, water supply, sewage system, electrical maintenance, public toilets, traffic regulation etc.

2. Administration and management of the market complex. 3. Levy and collection of Registration fee and issue of Registration Certificate to the shops.

4. Levy and collection of License fee and Issue of License to the shops.

5. Levy and collection of maintenance charges.

6. Levy and collection of vehicle entry fee.

7. Providing security facilities to the market complex.

8. Convene the Market Management Committee meeting at periodical intervals and prepare Agenda for it.

9. Operation and Maintenance of the Bio-Methanation Plant.

Bio-Methanation Plant

Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex, being one of the largest in Asia, generates significant quantity of organic waste. About 80 Tons of wastes are generated everyday. Such organic waste dumps are a potential threat to the environment and to the public health and cause health hazards.

A Bio-Methanation Plant has been set up at Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex by CMDA with the Assistant of Ministry of Non Conventional Energy Sources, Government of , (MNES). Out of the total project cost 5.50 Crores MNES has contributed Rs.3.75 Crores and CMDA & MMC has contributed 1.75 Crores to this project.

Capacity of the project

The project will handle 30 Tons per day of wastes and produce about 230 KW power and 10 Tons of wet compost cakes. The net power after in house consumption shall be about 200 KW.
