This article examines, on the basis of two residential buildings by Franz Baumann, the status of the postulate of an autochthonous “Tyrolean Modernism”. Often mentioned together, five architects are among the main representatives of classical modernism in the Austrian province of Tyrol: Clemens Holzmeister, Lois Welzenbacher, Theodor Prachensky, Franz Baumann and Sigfried Mazagg. Even if they did not form a close circle because of their life paths, there is a strong link between them, mostly in their artistic background and their way of representing architecture. Architecture was a detour from a first aim to pursue an artistic career for all of them, with the exception of Welzenbacher. Architects like Franz Baumann not only “modernized” well-known typologies, but also regionalized elementary components of internationally widespread building traditions. The “Tyrolean Modernism” was repeatedly regarded as an “autochthonous” move- ment, even if the regional scene was not detached at all from the international de- velopment. The alpine environment, in particular, offered a framework of conditions that challenged the architects to top performance. They were able to plan for loca- tions that were uncharted territory in many respects: exposed in the mountains or high mountain areas. In this context, the architects of “Tyrolean Modernism” benefited from their painter- ly-trained eye for the morphology of Alpine landscapes. Holzmeister lehrte 1919-1923 an der StaatsgewerbeschuleInnsbruck, 1924-1938 und 1954-1957 an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien sowie 1928-1933 an der Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, und von 1940 bis 1949 hatte er eine Professur an der Technischen Hochschule in Istanbul. Mehr als 700 Studierende haben in seinen „Meisterschulen“ das Architekturstudium absolviert. Diese beeindru- ckende Zahl wirft die Frage auf, ob es eine „Holzmeister-Schule“ gibt. Photo: SF/Lukas Pilz (SF, October 2020) Graphic artist Poldi Wojtek created the poster design in 1928 which has served as the Salzburg Festival’s logo ever since – with the exception of the period of the National Socialist regime. On the occasion of its centenary, the Salzburg Festival commissioned two expert reports illuminating this chapter of Festival history: 1 Historical Report by Prof. Oliver Rathkolb The historian Oliver Rathkolb was commissioned to write a “Report on connections between Leopoldine (Poldi) Wojtek(-Mühlmann) and National Socialists from 1933 to 1945 and possible continuities in her ideological attitude towards the Nazi regime after 1945”. “Poldi Wojtek was – to borrow the humanist Ulrich von Hutten’s phrase – a ‘human being in all its contradictions’. We must realize that despite their extraordinary abilities and their talent for speaking to our emotions, artists are ultimately not perfect geniuses. They too are human beings with multiple weaknesses who only rarely oppose those in political power in a totalitarian dictatorship. Some of them, and Poldi Wojtek is among them, shamelessly took advantage of their political relationships and networks – all the way to unscrupulous enrichment by seizing Jewish property,” says Prof. Oliver Rathkolb.     Press Release of the Salzburg Festival 2020 “Dreaming of a Fairies’ Temple” Artistic Interventions on Festival Theatres Never Built (SF, 28 July 2020) A crumpled piece of paper by the wayside, a huge white table in a beech grove, stamped poles in the rhinoceros enclosure of the Hellbrunn Zoo, and a gold-varnished portal frame in Mirabellgarten – starting today, these open-air artworks remind us of abandoned ideas and plans to build a Festspielhaus in Salzburg. From the very beginning, the idea of a festival was closely linked to the notion of building a festival theatre. During the past 130 years, numerous sites and plans have been devised for this undertaking. Photo: SF/Anne Zeuner Esther Stocker (Vienna), Three-Part Wrinkle Sculpture for Mönchsberg Intervention on the Mozart-Festspielhaus project on Mönchsberg, 1890 (Atelier Fellner & Helmer, Vienna) The oldest of these designs was the work of the architects Fellner and Helmer in 1890. On Mönchsberg, a Mozart-Festspielhaus would have offered a counterweight to the temple of Wagner worship erected in Bayreuth, far from the noise of the city. The artist Esther Stocker has created a three-part wrinkle sculpture in this very location. Like carelessly crumpled paper, the aluminium sculptures lie on the grass; they depict the large-scale floor plan of the Festspielhaus design, another page from the brochure of the Action Committee “Das Mozart- Festspielhaus in Salzburg” of 1890 and its cover page.

Upper-division undergraduate and graduate students from other departments are welcome to enroll with the consent of the instructor. Description: This course will explore the history of architecture and design in the lands that made up the Habsburg Empire and its successor states (Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, southern Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, northern Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, northern Italy, and western Ukraine) from the time of the Baroque to the present, focusing on the rise of the modernism in the region. In addition to surveying the significant building and design trends, the lectures will examine the works and ideas of a number of important architects, including J. B. Fischer von Erlach, Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos, Josef Hoffmann, Jože Plečnik, Ödön Lechner, Jan Kotěra, Josef Frank, Hans Hollein, and Coop Himmelb(l)au. The course will also include a discussion of the development of the major cities of the region—Vienna, Prague, and Budapest— examining how industrialization, rapid urbanization, and war shaped the distinctive face of each metropolis. The course will be taught in a combined lecture and seminar format. Educational Objectives: The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the historical development of architecture in Central Europe; to introduce them to the basic trends and leading architects and designers; and to acquaint them with the way in which historical change has shaped the region's built environment.
