As your Students’ Union we are here to support each and every student, representing the student voice by getting all of you heard - your ideas, concerns, thoughts and feedback. We want to improve cross-college communication and get everyone excited about the London 2012 Olympics! We are here to help make college an enjoyable and exciting part of all our lives. As a student I feel that all the staff do a fantastic job supporting me and other students with their studies and personal lives, and as your President I will do my utmost to ensure that continues. This year we’re selecting charities to support throughout the year and especially during our RAG week! We’re all looking forward to a busy and fun year, but to achieve this and to continue holding awesome parties we need you! This should be a great year ahead which you will never forget. I am delighted you are thinking about EMMA FEELEY, 17, ANTHROPOLOGY, joining us and believe we can offer COMMUNICATION STUDIES AND PSYCHOLOGY A LEVELS you the ultimate college experience. But don’t just take my word for it - at our last Ofsted Inspection we were graded “good” overall. Inspectors commented that “success rates were well above national averages”, “very good academic and pastoral support” and “curriculum enrichment, including work experience, visits and external speakers, is strong”. Our range of courses is inspiring and challenging and we have extensive practical resources so that you can get ‘hands on’ learning experience. In addition we can provide you with plenty of support and optional extras. The world is full of fabulous opportunities. Whatever your ambitions and plans for the future, we can help to make it happen. I hope you decide to join us and look forward to meeting you. We represent the thousands of students at the College and organise sporting, recreational and charity events throughout the year, starting with Fresher's Week and culminating in the Summer Ball. THE STUDENTS’ UNION 7 Take part in Black History Month, do an Emergency First Aid Course, raise money for Children in Need, visit the Clothes Show Live, score the winning goal in the Cross- College Football Tournament and celebrate the end of term with the Students’ Union Christmas Party - these are just some of the things you could be doing in your first term at College! If you are over 16, you can also apply for an NUS Extra Card from Student Services or visit NUS website www.nus.org.uk, which will give you discounts from Amazon, McDonalds, Odeon, 16-25 Railcards and most High Street shops. Get involved! 8 GET SET TO GO TO THE GAMES! Get Set to go to the Games! We’re going to London 2012! Guildford College is part of the Get Set network, a special community of schools and colleges which are: • demonstrating a commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values: respect, friendship, equality, excellence, inspiration, courage and determination. • using the London 2012 Games to inspire learners of all ages and abilities to get involved in values-based projects and activities. This year, our students will have the opportunity to go on tours of the Olympic Park, be visited by Olympians and Paralympians and enter into prize draws to win goodies like digital cameras. But, best of all, by joining the Get Set network we have prequalified Guildford College for an allocation of tickets to the London 2012 Games!
