V Abstract The idea of the present thesis was to combine different established methods in a high-resolution study on a short-timed interval of Duckmantian strata (Pennsylvanian/Upper Carboniferous) of the Ruhr Basin, Western Germany. Organic petrographical, palynological, sedimentological and organic geochemical techniques were used to obtain a huge data set, to support the argumentations and discussions. In doing so, these investigations were focused on two main goals: (a) the maturity and quality of source rocks and (b) the evolution of swamp environments. For this study, six coal-bearing seam successions were examined. Fresh drilling material was provided by the DSK coal mine Prosper Haniel in the Ruhr Basin, western Germany. All samples were taken from two multilateral wells. Experimental investigations comprise the following techniques: Sedimentological core description, maceral analyses, vitrinite reflectance, TOC, ash and Rock-Eval pyrolysis on sediments, kerogen concentrates and coal-mineral-mixtures, palynological investigations on miospores, and GC analyses on n-alkanes, and iso-alkanes. (a) Maturity and quality of source rocks This first part of the study focuses on the quality, quantity and maturity of coal and dispersed terrigenous organic matter. Furthermore, kerogen concentrates and coal-mineral-mixtures also were analysed. For the sampled interval samples show a vitrinite reflectance between 0.75 and 1.0 % with an increase of maturity towards the stratigraphic older and deeper seam successions. Average vitrinite reflectance of sediment samples is slightly higher than that of coal samples. The maturity trend also is reflected in the Tmax values of Rock-Eval pyrolysis or the C17/C27-relationship. Investigations on petroleum potential show a kerogen type III respectively II/III for the sampled interval. Differences between Rock-Eval parameters determined on whole rock samples and kerogen concentrates were observed, especially with respect to Hydrogen Index (HI) values. In coals, which were compared with dispersed organic matter of similar maceral composition, the HI is about two times as high as that of the sediment samples. In contrast, Oxygen Indices are much higher for dispersed type III kerogen than for coal, caused by the stronger degradation of organic compounds in the clastic environments as compared to the peat environments. However, Oxygen Indices clearly are influenced by decomposition of carbonate minerals. Furthermore, Hydrogen Indices of dispersed kerogen are influenced by mineral-matrix effects. Experiments with artificial mixtures of coal and minerals show that reactions with pyrite seem to reduce HI values of kerogen concentrates significantly. VII (b) Evolution of swamp environments The second part of the thesis focuses on palynological investigations on miospores to reconstruct the swamp evolution during the Duckmantian of the Ruhr Basin. In addition, sedimentological and organic petrographical data confirmed the interpretation. Based on published information of in situ spores the encountered miospores were assigned to their parent plants in order to reconstruct the vegetation history. In this study six plant associations were identified by using a Detrended Correspondence Analyses (DCA): lepidocarpacean association I, lepidocarpacean association II, lepidocarpacean – sigillarian association, lepidocarpacean – sphenophyll association, lepidocarpacean – fern association, and the subarborescent lycopsid association. Furthermore, coal petrographical GI/TPI and GWI/VI relationships also reflect these associations. Another new defined index, the water cover index (WCI), based on these palynological interpretations, reflects the ratio of hydrophilous/hygrophilous vs. mesophilous plants and gives additional information on the environment. In the sampled seam successions arborescent lycopsids are the most abundant plants, with a dominance of the miospore Lycospora. In 75 % of all samples the genus is represented with more than 50 % relative abundance. Hence, lepidocarpaceans such as Lepidophloios and Lepidodendron dominated the vegetation of the Ruhr Basin during the mid and late Duckmantian, forming flood plains and planar forest mires. Some variations are reflected in abundance of other spores. A greater influence of the sigillarian miospores Crassispora was typical for drier swamp margins, whereas densospore producing plants or sphenophylls characterized the stunted respectively scrambling vegetation of domed swamps. By contrast, fern influenced environments were rare during the Duckmantian. Recurring rhythmic successions of plant associations and depositional environments were noted in the studied interval: A lower flood plain is followed by peat substrate topogenous mires, which rise up and build an ombrogenous mire. After subsidence and recurrent flooding an upper flood plain was re- established. This general cycle is temporarily interrupted by other plant associations representing varying local environments. Drier sandbanks and swamp margin zones covered with sigillarians regularly occurred, implicating small environmental variations and a lateral shift of the swamp habitat. VIII Zusammenfassung Die Grundidee dieser Arbeit war die Kombination verschiedener Analyse-Methoden zur Durchführung einer hochauflösenden Studie. Hierfür wurde ein sehr kurzes Zeitintervall im Duckmantium (Pennsylvanium/Oberkarbon) des Ruhrbeckens/Deutschland ausgewählt. Die Anwendung von organsicher Petrographie, Palynologie, Sedimentologie sowie organischer Geochemie ermöglichten die Aufnahme eines sehr umfangreichen Datensatzes, dem eine statistisch gestützte Ergebnisdiskussion folgte und die zwei Hauptzielsetzungen hatte: (a) Reife und Qualität von Source Rocks und (b) Entwicklung von Sumpf-Environments. Im Laufe der Arbeit wurden sechs Flözbereiche ausgewertet. Von der Deutschen Steinkohle AG wurde frisch erbohrtes Kernmaterial (von zwei multilateralen Kernbohrungen aus Zeche Prosper Haniel, Ruhrgebiet) zur Verfügung gestellt. An diesem Material wurden verschiedenste Techniken durchgeführt: sedimentologische Bohrkernansprache, Mazeralanalyse, Vitrinitreflexionsmessungen, TOC-, Asche- und Rock-Eval-Pyrolysen an Sedimenten, Kerogenkonzentraten sowie Kohle-Mineral- Mischungen, palynologische Untersuchungen an Miosporen und GC-Analysen an n-Alkanen und iso- Alkanen. CALDER Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, PO Box 698, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada B3J 2T9 Abstract: Nova Scotia during the Carboniferous lay at the heart of palaeoequatorial Euramerica in a broadly intermontane palaeoequatorial setting, the Maritimes-West-European province; to the west rose the orographic barrier imposed by the Appalachian Mountains, and to the south and east the Mauritanide-Hercynide belt. The geological affinity of Nova Scotia to Europe, reflected in elements of the Carboniferous flora and fauna, was mirrored in the evolution of geological thought even before the epochal visits of Sir Charles Lyell. The Maritimes Basin of eastern Canada, born of the Acadian-Caledonian orogeny that witnessed the suture of Iapetus in the Devonian, and shaped thereafter by the inexorable closing of Gondwana and Laurasia, comprises a near complete stratal sequence as great as 12 km thick which spans the Middle Devonian to the Lower Permian. Across the southern Maritimes Basin, in northern Nova Scotia, deep depocentres developed en echelon adjacent to a transform platelet boundary between terranes of Avalon and Gondwanan affinity. The subsequent history of the basins can be summarized as distension and rifting attended by bimodal volcanism waning through the Dinantian, with marked transpression in the Namurian and subsequent persistence of transcurrent movement linking Variscan deformation with Mauritainide-Appalachian convergence and Alleghenian thrusting. This Mid- Carboniferous event is pivotal in the Carboniferous evolution of Nova Scotia. Rapid subsidence adjacent to transcurrent faults in the early Westphalian was succeeded by thermal sag in the later Westphalian and ultimately by basin inversion and unroofing after the early Permian as equatorial Pangaea finally assembled and subsequently rifted again in the Triassic.

ABSTRACT A contribution to the knowledge of Cycadales and Cycadeoidales present in the Upper Triassic of the Santa Juana Formation (Carnian-Raetian) in the Bio-Bío Region of Chile is provided. The groups are represented by the species Pseudoctenis longipinnata Anderson & Anderson, Pseudoctenis spatulata Du Toit and Pterophyllum azcaratei Herbst & Troncoso. A new species Pseudoctenis truncata nov. sp. is described. They appear to be related to other typical elements of the paleofloristic assamblages from the south-occidental border of Gondwanaland. The ferns of the late Ladinian, Middle Triassic flora from Monte Agnello, Dolomites, Italy. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 59 (3): 741–755. Several fern remains are described from the para-autochthonous early late Ladinian flora of the Monte Agnello (Dolo- mites, N-Italy). The plants are preserved in subaerially deposited pyroclastic layers. Some ferns, known already from the Anisian and Ladinian of this area, are confirmed (Neuropteridium elegans), but several taxa are described for the first time (Phlebopteris fiemmensis sp. nov., Cladophlebis ladinica sp. nov., Chiropteris monteagnellii sp. nov.). Cladophle- bis sp. and some indeterminable fern remains cannot yet be assigned to any family. Phlebopteris fiemmensis is now the oldest formally established species in the genus. The fern family Dipteridaceae (Thaumatopteris sp. and some fragments probably belonging to the Dipteridaceae because of their venation) has not been recorded previously from European sediments as old as the Ladinian. Although stratigraphically attributed to the late Ladinian, the flora is markedly distinct from other Ladinian floras of the Dolomites and the Germanic Basin. The flora from Monte Agnello shows a higher di- versity in ferns than coeval floras from this area although characteristic elements of the Ladinian of the Dolomites such as Anomopteris and Gordonopteris are missing. The new flora misses also the Marattiales (e.g., Danaeopsis, Asterotheca) and other elements such as Sphenopteris schoenleiniana, typical for the Ladinian of the Germanic Basin.

The purpose of this Phase 1 Palaeontological Impact Assessment is to identify exposed and potential Palaeontological Heritage on the site of the proposed development, to assess the impact the development may have on this resource, and to make recommendations as to how this impact might be mitigated. This Palaeontological Assessment forms part of the Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) and complies with the requirements of the South African National Heritage Resource Act No 25 of 1999 as well as the KwaZulu-Natal Heritage Act No 4 of 2008. In accordance with Section 38 of the National Resources Act No 25 of 1999 (Heritage Resources Management), a HIA is required to assess any potential impacts to palaeontological heritage within the development footprint. The development site for the proposed proposed construction of the Bhazamani Road (L3046) Upgrade, Msinga Local Municipality, Umzinyathi District Municipality, Kwazulu- Natal Province is underlain by Carboniferous to Permian aged sedimentary rocks of the Dwyka Group, Pietermaritzburg and Vryheid Formations, Ecca Group and Dolerite of the Karoo Supergroup as well as sections underlain by deep boulder rich alluvium.

Chcąc zmierzyć się z zadaniem kompilacji tego rodzaju słownika, autor miał dość mgliste wyobrażenie na temat rozmiarów czekającej go pracy i ilości materiałów, jakie trzeba będzie zgro− madzić i opracować. Świadomość ogromu pracy, jaka go czeka, wzrastała jednak, w miarę jak zbliżał się do końca pracy nad częścią pierwszą, która ostatecznie ukazała się w roku 2000 jako trzeci tom publikowanej przez Centrum serii „Materiały Opracowania”. Udało się w niej na 252 stronach zmieścić pierwszą setkę biogramów. Ponieważ zawierającej kolejne 100 biografii części drugiej, nad którą pracę autor ukończył w roku 2004, nie udało się wydać w ramach wspomnianej serii, należało poszukać innej drogi, by udostępnić czytelnikom opra− cowany materiał. Jednocześnie pojawiła się też potrzeba zarówno wznowienia pierwszej części, której niewielki nakład został w krótkim czasie wyczerpany, jak i skorygowania błędów, które się w niej pojawiły i wprowadzenia uzupełnień opartych na materiałach źródłowych, jakie udało się autorowi zgromadzić od czasu jej wydania. Opracowany materiał postanowił on ponadto uzupełnić biogramami, które nie weszły do obu ukończonych już części, i biogramami, które powstały po ukończeniu części drugiej.

At the Bayo and Cocodrilo Hills (Potrerillos, northwestern Mendoza Province, Argentina) two stratigraphic logs were measured in detail and 16 plantiferous levels were determined. In this contribution the systematic study of the paleoflora is presented. The 23 taxa recognized belong to Sphenopsida (Equisetales), Filicopsida (Filicales) and Gymnospermopsida (Corystospermales, Peltaspermales, Cycadales, Ginkgoales, Petriellales and Gnetales).
