  • Steve Swallow with Robert Creeley So There
ECM Steve Swallow with Robert Creeley So There Robert Creeley: voice; Steve Kuhn: piano; Steve Swallow: bass; The Cikada String Quartet: Henrik Hannisdal: violin; Odd Hannisdal: violin; Marek Konstantynowicz: viola; Morten Hannisdal; violoncello XtraWATT 12 CD 6025 170 0494 (8) Release: November 2006 “Writing is the same as music. It’s in how you phrase it, how you hold back the note, bend it, shape it, and then release it. And what you don’t play is as important as what you do say.”- Robert Creeley Steve Swallow’s “So There” is a recording that began as a collaboration with Robert Creeley and became an hommage to the great American poet, who died in 2005 - before the project’s completion. It is more than a “jazz and poetry” disc. The structure of Swallow’s music derives from the structure of Creeley’s verse, and its rhythms are related to Creeley’s readings of his work. “I tried to get inside Bob’s breathing as he spoke the lines. Paradoxically, I think this has resulted in my most heartfelt and personal music.” A finely-focused amalgamation of words and music, with exceptional writing for string quartet, it also leaves expressive freedom for Swallow himself as soloist and for pianist Steve Kuhn, who gives one of the most comprehensive performances of his career. Both words and music trigger powerful associations, new layers of meanings opening with each listening. Steve Swallow was immediately taken with Robert Creeley’s writing in the late 50s on encountering it in Donald Allen’s anthology ‘The New American Poetry’ , a book which examined the work of young poets then challenging literary orthodoxy, the new line taking its impetus from the innovations of Ezra Pound and William Carlos Williams and Louis Zukofsky.

  • Gary Burton & M. Ozone
This pdf was last updated: Apr/23/2010. Gary Burton & M. Ozone Gary Burton and Makoto Ozone are so telepathically in sync as a duo and with they have such an innate feel for the space between jazz and classical music. Line-up Gary Burton - vibraphone Makoto Ozone - piano On Stage: 2 Travel Party: 3 Website www.garyburton.com Biography Gary Burton: One of the two great vibraphonists to emerge in the 1960s (along with Bobby Hutcherson), Gary Burton's remarkable four-mallet technique can make him sound like two or three players at once. He recorded in a wide variety of settings and always sounds distinctive. Self-taught on vibes, Burton made his recording debut with country guitarist Hank Garland when he was 17, started recording regularly for RCA in 1961, and toured with George Shearing's quintet in 1963. He gained some fame while with Stan Getz's piano-less quartet during 1964-1966, and then put together his own groups. In 1967, with guitarist Larry Coryell, he led one of the early "fusion" bands; Coryell would later be succeeded by Sam Brown, Mick Goodrick, John Scofield, Jerry Hahn, and Pat Metheny. Burton recorded duet sets with Chick Corea, Ralph Towner, Steve Swallow, and Paul Bley, and collaborated on an album apiece with Stephane Grappelli and Keith Jarrett. Among his sidemen in the late '70s and '80s were Makoto Ozone, Tiger Okoshi, and Tommy Smith. Very active as an educator at Berklee since joining its faculty in 1971, Burton remained a prominent stylist. He recorded during different periods of his career extensively releasing Like Minds through Concord in 1998.

  • Catalogue 2009/10 ECM Paul Griffiths Bread and Water
Catalogue 2009/10 ECM Paul Griffiths Bread and Water Here is someone standing at the entrance to the gallery who goes on talking all the time while almost all the visitors who come are rushing by in their eagerness to inspect what is on show inside. The hall a little way beyond is packed with rare and wonderful things, beautifully laid out and informatively labelled. There is much to see, much to learn. This is what the visitors have come for. Why, then, linger at the doorway? Why wait? But you, you have stopped. Thank you. Yes, this is the gallery, this the exhibition: a catalogue. We can use the word either to mean this paper object you hold in your hands or the totality of items a publisher or, as in this case, record company has available for sale: the CATALOGUE, as we may put it. Such a CATALOGUE is changeable as the ocean is: things will go (though rarely, where ECM is concerned), more will come. The catalogue, on the other hand, is fixed, a photograph of the ocean. There was a moment, probably before it reached print, when the catalogue was identical with the CATALOGUE. But that moment has passed and will not come again, for the ocean is growing and the photograph cannot. Is the catalogue therefore impoverished? No, no more than a photograph is. This is no snapshot, no fuzzy image trapped half_thoughtlessly on a mobile phone. Look at what you have in your hands: this is something well made, something composed. A professional photographer must have been invited to make a study of the ocean.
