Biogeographic relict, extinction risk, global warming, species richness, sub-alpine prairies Abstract. During the last few decades the tree line has shifted upward on Mediterranean mountains. This has resulted in a decrease in the area of the sub-alpine prairie habitat and an increase in the threat to strictly orophilous moths that occur there. This also occurred on the Pollino Massif due to the increase in temperature and decrease in rainfall in Southern Italy. We found that a number of moths present in the alpine prairie at 2000 m appear to be absent from similar habitats at 1500–1700 m. Some of these species are thought to be at the lower latitude margin of their range. Among them, Pareulype berberata and Entephria flavicinctata are esti- mated to be the most threatened because their populations are isolated and seem to be small in size. The tops of these mountains are inhabited by specialized moth communities, which are strikingly different from those at lower altitudes on the same massif further south. The majority of the species recorded in the sub-alpine prairies studied occur most frequently and abundantly in the core area of the Pollino Massif.

    FRESHWATER FISH SURVEY OF HOMADOLA-NAKIYADENIYA ESTATES, SRI LANKA. Prepared by Hiranya Sudasinghe BSc. (Hons) Zoology, M.Phil. reading (University of Peradeniya) INTRODUCTION The diversity of freshwater fishes in Sri Lanka is remarkably high, with a total of 93 indigenous fishes being recorded from inland waters, out of which 53 are considered to be endemic (MOE, 2012; Batuwita et al., 2013). Out of these, 21 are listed as Critically Endangered, 19 as Endangered and five as Vulnerable in the National Red List (MOE, 2012). In addition, several new species of freshwater fishes have been discovered in the recent past which have not yet been evaluated for Red Listing (Batuwita et al., 2017; Sudasinghe 2017; Sudasinghe & Meegaskumbura, 2016; Sudasinghe et al., 2016). Out of the 22 families that represent the Sri Lankan freshwater ichthyofauna, the family Cyprinidae dominates, representing about 50% of the species, followed by the families Gobiidae, Channidae and Bagridae, which represent seven, five and four species, respectively. The remainder of the other families are each represented in Sri Lanka by three species or less. Four major ichthyological zones, viz. Southwestern zone, Mahaweli zone, Dry zone and the Transition zone were identified by Senanayake and Moyle (1982) based on the distribution and the endemism of the fish. The Southwestern zone shows the greatest diversity, followed by the Mahaweli zone, with the least diversity observed in the Dry zone. About 60% of the freshwater fishes occur both in the dry and the wet zones of the island while the rest are more or less restricted to the wet zone. Of the endemic fishes, more than 60% are restricted to the wet zone of the island while about 30% occur in both the dry and the wet zones.

The lake is characterised by the presence of a fluctuating cover of floating macrophytes, whose shading effects shape the phytoplakton community and the ecosystem functioning, which was absent during the study period. The experiment was run in situ using polyethylene bags, comparing treatments with and without zooplankton. The cascade effect of zooplankton on phytoplankton and the lower levels of the microbial food web (ciliates, heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) and picoplankton) were analysed. A significant zooplankton grazing on the nano-phytoplankton fraction (3–30 mm) was observed. Conversely, large algae (filamentous cyanobacteria, colonial chlorophytes and large diatoms) increased in all mesocosms until day 10, suggesting that they were not actively grazed by zooplankton during this period.

Economic viability within the catchment. Insurance (or not). Knock-on effect for people who live within the region. Public health risks associated with dampness. Schools impacted by this and the implications for mental health. Property values. Depress the economy. • We may have gone past some of the thresholds for viable land use in some regions. Rates increases becoming untenable for both councils and farmers. As soon as we say we will no longer top up the stopbanks that will be the loss of that community (and a loss for many people). Unless we have a parallel way to get out. Will be legal challenges and huge ramifications. Some of the community do not believe in climate change. • Perceptions of safety by citizens due to having stopbanks. Loss of storytelling. Need to pay if they want to go from a 50yr to a 100 yr scheme. Gold-plated scheme $$$. If locals can't pay, the wider community or central government pay. Cost to others. Debt caps exist however. • Loss of stopbank could knock out key roading infrastructure. In particular SH25. Would have to change to SH2. • Loss of stopbank impacts local communities (i.e., housing). • Loss of stopbanks impacts on agriculture and farming communities. • Bigger pipes could lead to benefits for fish passage, etc. • Need to ensure wastewater is dealt with to protect water supply. • Important to maintaining commercial viability. • Financial implications if wastewater is knocked out.

    Proceedings of a Workshop on the Development of a Genetic Improvement Program for African Catfish African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) production has gained considerable importance in a number of African countries. The species has several desirable attributes that make it attractive for aquaculture development. It is easy to reproduce, it does not require specialized feed, it tolerates high stocking densities, it accepts artificial feed, it tolerates poor water quality, and very importantly, it is highly sought after in local markets and economically viable in pond production systems. The species is endemic to Africa. In 2007 the WorldFish Center organized a workshop in Accra, Ghana, hosted by the Water Research Institute, to review the status of the catfish industry in Africa and develop recommendations on how best to approach the issue of genetic improvement programs. The results of the workshop are presented in this volume.     CAPE Sri Lanka, Linked Document 7 SECTOR ASSESSMENT: AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES A. Introduction 1. An assessment of Asian Development Bank (ADB) operations in the agriculture and natural resources (ANR) sector in Sri Lanka for the period January 2006 to December 2015 was undertaken to provide input for the 2016 country assistance program evaluation (CAPE). The assessment consisted of a desk review of project documents, and additional evidence gathered during the independent evaluation mission (IEM), including interviews with knowledgeable informants at the central government level, discussions with key non-government observers and representatives of other development partners, field observations, and interviews with beneficiaries.1 The portfolio consisted only of completed projects, since no new projects in the sector had been approved since 2003. The projects covered were thus (i) those for which completion had been delayed into the current CAPE period or (ii) projects which had long implementation periods (in some cases up to 7 years). The projects were not covered by any of the country partnership strategies (CPSs) covering the period 2004 to 2015 outlined in the evaluation approach paper.2 The earliest project was approved in 1997 and the latest in 2003. Nonetheless, an analysis of these projects and their outcomes and impacts does produce important lessons with implications for the CAPE and its analysis of the strategic achievements of ADB lending within the context of the CPSs in the period 2004 to 2015; the government’s own development strategy over approximately the same period; ADB’s Strategy 20203 along with its 2014 Midterm Review,4 and the recently published Operational Plan for Agriculture and Natural Resources 2015–2020 (OPANR).5 2.
