Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. For further information, see the references on the last page. The Lord Howe Island endemic palm Hedyscepe canterburyana is restricted to two mountains above 300 m altitude. Predation by the introduced Black Rat (Rattus rattus) is known to significantly reduce seedling recruitment. We examined the variation in Hedyscepe in terms of genetic variation, morphology, reproductive output and demographic structure, across an altitudinal gradient. -

RHS Chelsea 2012: Hillier New Plant Introduction Hillier Nurseries launches Choisya ‘Aztec Gold’, the latest masterpiece from Alan Postill, 50 years a Hillier plantsman New to Hillier Nurseries, the UK & the world in 2012 Celebrating 50 years this summer as a Hillier plantsman, man and boy, Alan Postill has done it again. The highly respected propagator of Daphne bholua ‘Jaqueline Postill’ and Digitalis ‘Serendipity’ has bred a sensational new golden form of the Mexican orange blossom, which is up for Chelsea New Plant of the Year. Choisya ‘Aztec Gold’ is an attractive, bushy, evergreen shrub with striking, golden, aromatic foliage - rich gold at the ends of the shoots, green-gold in the heart of the plant. Its slender leaflets are very waxy and weather resistant, and do not suffer the winter damage of other golden foliage varieties. In spring and early summer, and then again in autumn, delicious almond-scented white flowers appear, attracting bees and butterflies. In Choisya ‘Aztec Gold’, Alan Postill has realised his objective of creating a remarkably strong-growing, golden foliage form of the Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’, which Hillier introduced 30 years ago in1982, and has since become one of the nation’s best-selling and best-loved garden shrubs. Knowing its pedigree and performance in real gardens, Alan selected Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’ as one of the parent plants for the new variety. Choisya ‘Aztec Gold’ performs well in any reasonably fertile well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, although the colour will be less golden in shade, of course. It is ideally suited to a mixed border or a large container, and planted with other gold foliage or gold variegated shrubs, or contrasted with blue flowers or plum-purple foliage. -

Incluímos espécies que constam em publicações e em trabalhos inéditos dos autores, cujas coletas, realizadas no estado, estão incorporadas nos herbários CGMS, COR e CPAP. Adicionalmente, foram incluídas espécies de Arecaceae, coletadas no estado depositadas em outros Herbários e espécies dos gêneros Arachis, Dioscorea e Passifl ora que constam na Lista de Espécies da Flora do Brasil para o Mato Grosso do Sul. Foram encontradas 294 espécies, distribuídas em 160 gêneros e 67 famílias botânicas. As famílias mais ricas foram Fabaceae (49) e Myrtaceae (38), seguidas por Arecaceae (32) e Passifl oraceae (12). Esta é a primeira listagem de espécies alimentícias do estado. Day 2 Friday 22nd September From Puembo to Patate On the easternmost section of a mountain plateau within the Ecuadorian Andean mountains, Puembo Birding Garden and the nearby Quito Airport are located. This plateau is formed by three valleys: Quito, Los Chillos and Tumbaco. The last two drain dry warm air and warm water from cooler superficial streams which start further south on the mountains of the Cotopaxi, Sincholagua and Pasochoa volcanoes. As they flow north, those streams carve deep gorges in a mix of lahar (mudflow and debris) remnants from the Cotopaxi successive volcanic eruptions and volcanic ashes from other nearby active volcanoes. The Machangara River, the natural drainage of the southern section of the Quito Valley, joins San Pedro and Chiche Rivers to form the Guayllabamba, the major river which gives the name to the watershed that we explored today. Before taking off, at Puembo Birding Garden, we described some of the frequent plants of the area including Tillandsia recurvata, and Tillandsia secunda (Bromeliaceae) as epiphytes on Inga insignis (Leguminosae, formerly Mimosaceae) on the citrus trees of one of the orchards on the property and also rooting on the power lines of the neighborhood. -

Campus, Kumaun University, Nainital, Uttarakhand, India [email protected] Abstract: This article offers a short describes on the Extremely Rare and Endemic Beautiful Taxon Palm, Trachycarpus takil Becc. [Academia Arena, 2009;1(5):81-82]. ISSN 1553-992X. Kumaun Himalaya offers a unique platform for nurturing several endemic taxa and therefore is a type locality of these taxa. Trachycarpus takil Becc. is one of them, which is extremely rare in occurrence in wild state and has a specific habitat preference. Trachycarpus takil Becc. belonging to the family Arecaceae (Palmae) which is a rare and endemic taxon of this Kumaun Himalaya having a very small population in wild state. However, by far no serious attempt towards its conservation has been undertaken. This species has been cultivated around Nainital and Ranikhet in Kumaun Himalaya by Britishers and explore the causes responsible for their being rare and threatened in the wild state. Trachycarpus takil Becc. is a cold temperate species for Palm family and grows in dense humid temperate forest between 2000-2700m altitude usually in association with Alnus nepalensis, Quercus leucotricophera, Q. floribunda, Ilex dipyrena, Rhododendron arboreum, Lyonia ovalifolia, Betula ulnoides, Cupressus torulosa, Abies pindrow, Persea duthiei etc. It usually prefers north and northwestern aspects in hilly slope on moist humus rich soil having localized natural population. The wild adults population of this palm species appears to be extremely rare and highly threatened. -

Abstract: This paper describes the leaf anatomy of Sabal mauritiiformis (Karst.) Griseb. & H. Wendl., Sabal mexicana Mart. and Sabal yapa Wright ex Becc., three of the four most representative species of the Yucatán Península, in Mexico. These species are locally used: in the roofing of traditional homes, as food (fruits and api- cal buds), and in the production of hats, brooms and handicrafts. Leaf samples were collected in secondary growth of lower montane rainforest in the state of Quintana Roo and in two home gardens in the state of Yuca- tán. Herbarium samples were obtained, and samples of blade and petiole were fixed in formaline-acetic acid-al- cohol. Cross incisions were made on the blade and petiole, and were dyed with safranin and toluidine blue O. The results show that S. mauritiiformis and S. yapa are morphologically alike: both are tall, slim palm trees; the leaf in S. mauritiiformis is a shorter palm-like structure compared with the other two species. The shape of the main nerve, as seen in cross section, is rectangular in the three species. -

Aceito em 16.XII.2011 RESUMO - Os Campos Gerais constituem uma área de grande relevância ecológica sob forte pressão antrópica, sendo considerada prioritária para a conservação. Estudos mais re- centes de restauração ambiental levam em conta grupos funcionais ao invés de espécies na elaboração de estratégias de restauração. Nesse estudo a vegetação campestre nativa de Alagados foi caracterizada através de grupos funcionais como subsídio à planos de recompo- sição da flora. Em coletas quinzenais no período 2009/2010 em 9,4 ha foram levantados 439 táxons pertencentes a 56 famílias botânicas, sendo as com maior riqueza: Asteraceae (123), Fabaceae (45), Poaceae (42), Cyperaceae (24), Melastomataceae (17), Myrtaceae (16), Lamiaceae (14), Verbenaceae (12), Lythraceae (11) e Eriocaulaceae (9). O grupo funcional mais representativo foi o de caméfitos (44,4%), seguido por geófitos (25,6%) e hemicriptó- fitos (15,6%), indicando que a estratégia utilizada por estes grupos é bastante vantajosa para plantas de campos de altitude selecionadas pelo inverno rigoroso do sul do Brasil.
