GERRY MULLIGAN DISCOGRAPHY GERRY MULLIGAN RECORDINGS, CONCERTS AND WHEREABOUTS by Gérard Dugelay, France and Kenneth Hallqvist, Sweden January 2011 Gerry Mulligan DISCOGRAPHY - Recordings, Concerts and Whereabouts by Gérard Dugelay & Kenneth Hallqvist - page No. 1 PREFACE BY GERARD DUGELAY I fell in love when I was younger I was a young jazz fan, when I discovered the music of Gerry Mulligan through a birthday gift from my father. This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

Appendix: The Recordings These are the URLs of the original locations where I found the recordings used in this book. Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know. In the meantime, I have provided low-level mp3 files of the tracks that are not available or that I have modified in pitch or speed in private listening vaults where they can be heard. This way, the entire book can be verified by listening to the same re- cordings and works that I heard. For locations of these private sound vaults, please e-mail me and I will send you the links. They are not to be shared or downloaded, and the selections therein are only identified by their numbers from the complete list given below. Chapter I: 0001. • Prestige Label Discography
Discography of the Prestige Labels Robert S. Weinstock started the New Jazz label in 1949 in New York City. The Prestige label was started shortly afterwards. Originaly the labels were located at 446 West 50th Street, in 1950 the company was moved to 782 Eighth Avenue. Prestige made a couple more moves in New York City but by 1958 it was located at its more familiar address of 203 South Washington Avenue in Bergenfield, New Jersey. Prestige recorded jazz, folk and rhythm and blues. The New Jazz label issued jazz and was used for a few 10 inch album releases in 1954 and then again for as series of 12 inch albums starting in 1958 and continuing until 1964. The artists on New Jazz were interchangeable with those on the Prestige label and after 1964 the New Jazz label name was dropped. Early on, Weinstock used various New York City recording studios including Nola and Beltone, but he soon started using the Rudy van Gelder studio in Hackensack New Jersey almost exclusively. Rudy van Gelder moved his studio to Englewood Cliffs New Jersey in 1959, which was close to the Prestige office in Bergenfield. Producers for the label, in addition to Weinstock, were Chris Albertson, Ozzie Cadena, Esmond Edwards, Ira Gitler, Cal Lampley Bob Porter and Don Schlitten. Rudy van Gelder engineered most of the Prestige recordings of the 1950’s and 60’s. The line-up of jazz artists on Prestige was impressive, including Gene Ammons, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Art Farmer, Red Garland, Wardell Gray, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Milt Jackson and the Modern Jazz Quartet, “Brother” Jack McDuff, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, Don Patterson, Sonny Rollins, Shirley Scott, Sonny Stitt and Mal Waldron.

  • Primary Sources: an Examination of Ira Gitler's
PRIMARY SOURCES: AN EXAMINATION OF IRA GITLER’S SWING TO BOP AND ORAL HISTORY’S ROLE IN THE STORY OF BEBOP By CHRISTOPHER DENNISON A thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements of Master of Arts M.A. Program in Jazz History and Research Written under the direction of Dr. Lewis Porter And approved by ___________________________ _____________________________ Newark, New Jersey May, 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Primary Sources: An Examination of Ira Gitler’s Swing to Bop and Oral History’s Role in the Story of Bebop By CHRISTOPHER DENNISON Thesis director: Dr. Lewis Porter This study is a close reading of the influential Swing to Bop: An Oral History of the Transition of Jazz in the 1940s by Ira Gitler. The first section addresses the large role oral history plays in the dominant bebop narrative, the reasons the history of bebop has been constructed this way, and the issues that arise from allowing oral history to play such a large role in writing bebop’s history. The following chapters address specific instances from Gitler’s oral history and from the relevant recordings from this transitionary period of jazz, with musical transcription and analysis that elucidate the often vague words of the significant musicians. The aim of this study is to illustratethe smoothness of the transition from swing to bebop and to encourage a sense of skepticism in jazz historians’ consumption of oral history. ii Acknowledgments The biggest thanks go to Dr. Lewis Porter and Dr.

  • XI. Charles Mingus
XI. Charles Mingus It was Mingus who soon became the dominant jazz composer of his time and the one who had the furthest-reaching influence on what he called “jazzical moods.” Even as far back as his 1940s recordings of Story of Love and Inspiration (which later, with lyrics added, became God’s Portrait), Mingus evolved a highly unusual and individual style of scoring that sounded classical yet seemed to owe nothing to any particular classical composer. Generally, he gravitated towards unusual, dark keys such as D or E minor; his melodic structures often followed the unusual chord changes rather than leading them; and his instrumentation usually focused on low strings and brass (cello, French horn, trombone, bass and sometimes viola) with the upper range provid- ing contrast via high winds (flute, clarinet, and alto sax). Even at Brandeis, where he had the op- tion to use violins if he chose, he scored Revelations in this manner. And curiously, Mingus never felt compelled to complete the work, leaving this “first movement” an orphan for the re- mainder of his life. Jazz critic Brian Priestly has suggested filling in the work with other pieces from around the same time, such as Slippers, although I hear it better filled out with Adagio ma non troppo as the second movement and Far Wells, Mill Valley as the third. Four our purposes here, we shall go back to 1953 to begin our chronology of his works, specifically with the first recording of Eclipse. Written for Billie Holiday, who never sang it, the lyrics refer to interracial love (“Eclipse…where the moon meets the sun…Eclipse…where two bodies meet as one”).

  • Thelonious Monk Timeline
Thelonious Monk Timeline 1917. Thelonious Monk was born on October 10, 1917 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. His badly written birth certificate misspelled his first name as "Thelious" or "Thelius". It also did not list his middle name, taken from his maternal grandfather, Sphere Batts. 1921. When he was just four, his parents, Barbara and Thelonious, Sr., moved to 2 43 West 63rd Street, in Manhattan, New York City, where he would spend the next five decades of his life. 1928. Monk began studying classical piano when he was eleven but had already shown some aptitude for the instrument. "I learned how to read before I took lessons," he later recalled. "You know, watching my sister practice her lessons over her shoulder." 1930. By the time Monk was thirteen, he had won the weekly amateur competition at the Apollo Theater so many times that the management banned him from reentering the contest. 1934. At age seventeen, Monk dropped out of the esteemed Stuyvesant High School to pursue his music career. He toured with the socalled "Texas Warhorse," an evangelist and faith healer, before assembling a quartet of his own. Although it was typical to play for a big band at this time, Monk preferred a more intimate work dynamic that would allow him to experiment with his sound. 1941. At age twenty four, Monk began working at Minton's Playhouse in Harlem, where he joined the house band and helped develop the school of jazz known as bebop. Alongside Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, he explored the fast, jarring, and often improvised styles that would later become synonymous with modern jazz.

  • Iii E. the Jazz Component: the Fantasy Collection
III E. THE JAZZ COMPONENT: THE FANTASY COLLECTION III E1. The LPs For many serious researchers into the changes and developments in jazz during the late 1940s and the early 1950s it is the LP albums which are part of the collection that will be of major interest. In particular Bill Belmont, as he assembled the Fantasy collection for the Archives, was able to locate a selection of the earliest 10” Prestige LPs which had been almost forgotten in the Fantasy warehouse. It should be emphasised, however, that these are not the original Prestige releases, which now sell for thousands of dollars on the collector’s market. To satisfy a small core of serious jazz enthusiasts, most of them in Japan, Fantasy manufactured facsimiles of many of the most important LPs in their catalog. Although the new albums are imprinted with an inconspicuous notice “Manufactured from master owned by Fantasy, Inc.” they are in every other respect identical with the originals. They are an invaluable time capsule of this crucial period of jazz’s development - and in their often primitive albums covers and minimal presentation they suggest the marginal nature of jazz as this period began. Also, in their LP format the modern listener has an insight into the programming concepts that led to the presentation of the material on the LP’s two sides. THE PRESTIGE 10”ALBUMS These have been reproduced with the original one color covers and - in the beginning - simply catalog listings on the back of the cover. The album notes, generally by Ira Gitler, begin after the first few examples.
