Hudsonian Godwit (Limosa haemastica) at Orielton Lagoon, Tasmania, 09/03/2018 Peter Vaughan and Andrea Magnusson E: T: Introduction: This submission pertains to the observation and identification of a single Hudsonian Godwit (Limosa haemastica) at Orielton Lagoon, Tasmania, on the afternoon of the 9th of March 2018. The bird was observed in the company of 50 Bar-tailed Godwits (Limosa lapponica) and a single Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa), and both comparative and diagnostic features were used to differentiate it from these species. Owing to the recognised difficulties in differentiating similar species of wading birds, this submission makes a detailed analysis of the features used to identify the godwit in question. If accepted, this sighting would represent the eighth confirmed record of this species in Australia, and the second record of this species in Tasmania. Sighting and Circumstances: The godwit in question was observed on the western side of Orielton Lagoon in Tasmania, at approximately 543440 E 5262330 N, GDA 94, 55G. This location is comprised of open tidal mudflats abutted by Sarcicornia sp. saltmarsh, and is a well- documented roosting and feeding site for Bar-tailed Godwits and several other species of wading bird. This has included, for the past three migration seasons, a single Black-tailed Godwit (extralimital at this location) associating with the Bar-tailed Godwit flock. The Hudsonian Godwit was observed for approximately 37 minutes, between approximately 16:12 and 16:49, although the mixed flock of Bar-tailed Godwits and Black-tailed Godwits was observed for 55 minutes prior to this time. The weather during observation was clear skies (1/8 cloud cover), with a light north- easterly breeze and relatively warm temperatures (wind speed nor exact temperature recorded). -

Abstract: A study was undertaken of the floristic patterns in coastal rainforest (low closed forest) of Shoalwater Bay, central Queensland. The site encompasses 60 km of coastline, extending from latitude 22° 08’ 30’’ to 22° 30’ 0” and longitude 150° 02’ 00” to 150° 24’ 30”. The rainforest grows on coastal Holocene sand dunes, swales and sand flats, distributed as a series of 27 discrete patches greater than one hectare along 60 kilometres of coastline. Mean patch size was 10.7 hectares (maximum 150 hectares). The flora was predominantly woody, and lacked the complex growth forms of Webb (1968). Floristic links with central and north Queensland were strong, with some species distributions extending into Malesia and the Pacific. Three physical strata, emergent (composed of trees), canopy (composed of trees, vines and epiphytes) and sub-canopy (trees, vines and herbs) were recognised. The herb layer was very poorly developed. Eighty-one species were recorded, representing 42 families and 72 genera. Sixty three quadrats were sampled across the rainforest patches to measure abundance of all vascular taxa using frequency score. Five floristic groups were defined from agglomerative classification analysis, one representing mixed forest, two representing low microphyll vine forest (LMVF) and two representing microphyll vine thicket (MVT). -

AUSTRALIA - VICTORIA LNW NO.1 OF 2021 GIPPSLAND PORTS NAVIGATION ADVICE OCEAN ACCESS BAR CROSSINGS ARE DANGEROUS DATE: Tuesday 9th March 2021 PREVIOUS Local Navigation Warning No10 of 2018 is referred. NOTICE: DETAILS: A recent Marine Incident has occurred at McLoughlins Beach ocean access entrance highlighting the risks involved for vessel operators attempting to make passage through and across ocean entrance sand bars. Gippsland Ports is the Local Port Manager for 5 Local Ports; Each of the following ports is a recognised Bar Port. • Port of Corner Inlet and Port Albert • Port of Gippsland Lakes • Port of Anderson Inlet • Port of Snowy River (Marlo) • Port of Mallacoota Inlet. Only the Ports of Corner Inlet, Port Albert and the Gippsland Lakes (Lakes Entrance Bar) have recognised aids to navigation to guide the Mariner through and across their respective ocean entrance sand bars. The entrances to these ports remain open at all times, however sound local knowledge and favorable environmental conditions are required to make a safe passage. The Port of Snowy River (Marlo), Port of Mallacoota Inlet and Port of Anderson Inlet are dynamic in nature with ever changing channel configuration and depths. Ocean access can be closed off at Marlo and Mallacoota during times of drought. There are no aids to navigation to guide the mariner through and across their respective ocean entrance sand bars. Lake Tyers - Sydenham Inlet and Tamboon Inlet, all remain closed until sufficient back up of water creates an ocean access entrance. -
