UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE Uncertain Satire in Modern Chinese Fiction and Drama: 1930-1949 A Dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature by Xi Tian August 2014 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Perry Link, Chairperson Dr. Paul Pickowicz Dr. Yenna Wu Copyright by Xi Tian 2014 The Dissertation of Xi Tian is approved: Committee Chairperson University of California, Riverside ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Uncertain Satire in Modern Chinese Fiction and Drama: 1930-1949 by Xi Tian Doctor of Philosophy, Graduate Program in Comparative Literature University of California, Riverside, August 2014 Dr. Perry Link, Chairperson My dissertation rethinks satire and redefines our understanding of it through the examination of works from the 1930s and 1940s. I argue that the fluidity of satiric writing in the 1930s and 1940s undermines the certainties of the “satiric triangle” and gives rise to what I call, variously, self-satire, self-counteractive satire, empathetic satire and ambiguous satire. It has been standard in the study of satire to assume fixed and fairly stable relations among satirist, reader, and satirized object. This “satiric triangle” highlights the opposition of satirist and satirized object and has generally assumed an alignment by the reader with the satirist and the satirist’s judgments of the satirized object. Literary critics and theorists have usually shared these assumptions about the basis of satire. I argue, however, that beginning with late-Qing exposé fiction, satire in modern Chinese literature has shown an unprecedented uncertainty and fluidity in the relations among satirist, reader and satirized object.

  • ABSTRACT Title of Document: the ANTI-CONFUCIAN CAMPAIGN
ABSTRACT Title of Document: THE ANTI-CONFUCIAN CAMPAIGN DURING THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION, AUGUST 1966-JANUARY 1967 Zehao Zhou, Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Directed By: Professor James Gao, Department of History This dissertation examines the attacks on the Three Kong Sites (Confucius Temple, Confucius Mansion, Confucius Cemetery) in Confucius’s birthplace Qufu, Shandong Province at the start of the Cultural Revolution. During the height of the campaign against the Four Olds in August 1966, Qufu’s local Red Guards attempted to raid the Three Kong Sites but failed. In November 1966, Beijing Red Guards came to Qufu and succeeded in attacking the Three Kong Sites and leveling Confucius’s tomb. In January 1967, Qufu peasants thoroughly plundered the Confucius Cemetery for buried treasures. This case study takes into consideration all related participants and circumstances and explores the complicated events that interwove dictatorship with anarchy, physical violence with ideological abuse, party conspiracy with mass mobilization, cultural destruction with revolutionary indo ctrination, ideological vandalism with acquisitive vandalism, and state violence with popular violence. This study argues that the violence against the Three Kong Sites was not a typical episode of the campaign against the Four Olds with outside Red Guards as the principal actors but a complex process involving multiple players, intraparty strife, Red Guard factionalism, bureaucratic plight, peasant opportunism, social ecology, and ever- evolving state-society relations. This study also maintains that Qufu locals’ initial protection of the Three Kong Sites and resistance to the Red Guards were driven more by their bureaucratic obligations and self-interest rather than by their pride in their cultural heritage.

  • Qingzhou Press Release (FINAL)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Rare 1,400 year old sculptures from Qingzhou at the Peranakan Museum – Only venue in Southeast Asia 14 January 2009, Singapore: Travel 1,400 years back in time to the period when Buddhist art was at its peak in China at Serenity in Stone: The Qingzhou Discovery , the newest exhibition held in the Peranakan Museum. Organised by the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM), in collaboration with the Art Gallery of New South Wales, this exhibition will be on show from 16 January to 26 April 2009. Visitors can expect to see 35 of the best preserved and most exquisite sculptures from Qingzhou, Shandong Province, northeast China, set in a serene and calming ambience. The discovery of these sculptures took place in 1996, when construction workers were levelling the ground to build a school sports field. Over 400 limestone sculptures dating back to the 6 th century CE during the Northern Wei, Eastern Wei and Northern Qi dynasties were found in a pit measuring 8.7 by 6.8 metres, and 2 metres deep. Archaeologists found that the sculptures were carefully buried, as though it was part of a ritual – however the reason for their burial still remains a mystery. The sculptures had lain undisturbed for over 800 years, and many still retain traces of paint and gold leaf, which gives us an idea of the splendour of their original decoration. This “accidental” find has become one of the more significant archeological finds of the 20 th century. Page 1 of 3 Dr. Kenson Kwok, Director, ACM said, “I was first captivated by these sculptures some ten years ago when I was in Beijing at a time when a large number of pieces from the Qingzhou discovery were on display in a special exhibition at the National History Museum in Tiananmen Square.
