These burials appeared to have been associated with the 13th century Franciscan Friary that had stood on the site. A stone built plinth and associated wall foundation, both still in situ, were also discovered and it seemed likely that these represented part of a building belonging to the Friary complex. It was likely therefore that the burials were placed within or at least very close to Friary buildings, presumably the church or cloisters. Re-used medieval masonry was seen to have made up much of the foundations of the mid-19th century buildings on the site. [Au(abr)]

A large west to east ditch was recorded cutting into the natural clayey silts. A near complete 17th century posset pot was recovered from the fill of this feature. The ditch was sealed by further post-medieval dumping layers which were cut through by a later north to south orientated ditch. More recent activity, most likely 20th century in origin, was consisted of a large concrete trough and its associated construction cut which truncated the majority of the deposits in the southern area of the foundation trenches. Two sandstone walls within Trench 2 may have been early modern, although one appeared to have been subsequently reused. An Iron Age post structure was also dated using radiocarbon dating. With such a small number of post holes it has prove difficult to interpret either of these structures. Roman activity was identified in Area 6 where a complex of parallel ditches and possible associated furrows from farming were located. The numerous parallel ditches formed a boundary dividing up the land and this boundary appeared to have been maintained for some time, possibly from the first to third or fourth century AD. A number of post-medieval farm trackways were identified in Area 7. These were focused on the site of the former Sharpe House Farm. Beneath this floor was the foundation of s substantial brick wall up to 0.8m thick. This wall may have been part of St. John Lister's late 16th century house, the predecessor of the present building. Beneath was a later medieval horizon. One other notable feature was a narrow culvert constructed of medieval brick and running east-west along the south wall. Excavation of a trench within a toilet block in the south-east part of the building exposed a barrel vaulted brick culvert running in an approximately south-west north-east alignment. The prehistoric pits were badly truncated and poorly preserved, and were located on a gravel rise close to an area that would have been wet throughout history. The archaeological remains revealed during this investigation consisted of traces of what appeared to be a robbed out wall along with the remains of an area of cobbling and a possible threshold or doorway for another building. A relatively large amount of artefactual and environmental material was recovered which included ironwork, ceramics, glass and animal bone. The majority of this material was 19/20th century in date though there were several sherds of late medieval/early post-medieval green glazed pottery recovered. These features appeared to represent the remains of agricultural buildings, probably associated with the surviving farmhouse, however there was a strong possibility of earlier phases of activity being present either below and/or adjacent to the features revealed, possibly related to the earlier 17th century structure. Five broad phases of archaeological activity were identified by the evaluation: Phase 1 was characterised by small residual assemblage of flint artefacts. Phase 2 (Romano-British) activity took the form of a series of field boundaries, ditches associated features and finds. Excavation showed that the ditch evolved in complexity over time and the pottery assemblage suggested that the system was in use from the mid 2nd century onwards. A large number of Romano-British coins, coin fragments and coin moulds were recovered from one of the field ditches. These finds were thought to have related to coin-forging and were of national significance. Phase 3 (medieval) activity was characterised by a complex of plough scares and furrows that ran from east to west. Phase 4 (post-medieval) activity consisted of a number of pits and other features. The post-medieval finds assemblage was unusual in that it contained a number of pistol and musket balls. These have may related to Civil War activity in the vicinity of the site. Phase 5 consisted of a number of modern post holes and other features that were of minimal archaeological significance. [Au(abr)]

Excavations revealed part of the Roman cemetery known from previous discoveries in and around the Mount. Twenty-four inhumation burials and one cremation were found; most if not all were adult males. The inhumations were notable for the presence of at least ten decapitations. These characteristics of the burials were comparable to those found at 1-3 Driffield terrace in 2004-5. However, the cemetery at 6 Driffield Terrace was thought to commence in the 3rd century and the decapitation rites were believed to have taken place during the later 3rd and 4th centuries, somewhat later than at No. 3. Malton : MAP Archaeological Consultancy Ltd., 2005, 179pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: MAP Archaeological Consultancy Ltd. Excavations in the area of the former car park revealed pits and dumps of pre-conquest date and the remains of a probable tenement boundary that dated to the 11th century. The archaeological sequence in Trench 5 consisted of a pre-conquest timber walkway that ran on a parallel alignment to a large wattle boundary fence. These features were sealed by a series of pre-conquest dump layers and rubbish pits that contained Anglo-Scandinavian finds. One badly truncated Anglo-Scandinavian pit contained the skeleton of a mature female, together with the fragmentary disarticulated remains of three other individuals. A timber lined medieval cesspit truncated the earlier dump sequences. The excavation provided evidence of early Romano-British occupation of the site in the form of a large rubbish pit. Trench 8 revealed the remains of a late pre-Conquest timber building that contained a number of internal features. Outside the building a series of dump deposits accumulated over a relatively short period of time. Pottery from a series of associated destruction deposits suggested that the building had been destroyed by fire some time around the middle of the 11th century. [Au(abr)]

Although the area disturbed by machine- excavated trenches was quite limited, a number of features were observed and recorded. Some of these were definitely, or probably, modern but at least one could possibly have been a medieval robber trench for a substantial stone wall. Unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered from the watching brief to confirm this. [Au(abr)] Archaeological Investigations Project 2005 Post-determination and Research Yorkshire & Humberside
