SCWI School College Work Initiative Newsletter DUAL CREDIT 2018 Dual Credit courses were introduced to help secondary students complete their Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and to successfully transition to college and apprenticeship programs.

A Dual Credit course offers a “two for one“ advantage. By successfully completing one course, your Dual Credit may be counted towards both your OSSD and college diploma, certificate, or apprenticeship program requirements at George Brown College.

Adult learners have access to an “After ADC” college advisor to assist them in researching and choosing postsecondary programs of interest and helping them to apply for college and to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). DUAL CREDIT BURSARY 2017-2018 George Brown College has offered Dual Credit Bursary Award for former Dual Credit students since 2011. To be eligible to apply for a bursary, former Dual Credit students must have received a final grade of 80% or higher in their Dual Credit course and be registered in a full time program at the College. During 2017-2018, 9 students were awarded Dual Credit bursary. The recipients were:

For more information, please visit our website at: http://www.georgebrown.ca/financialaid/06awards.aspx Newsletter SWAC School Within A College SCWI 2018 The School Within A College (SWAC) program is a Student Success initiative offering secondary students the opportunity to earn secondary school credits and dual credit ‘General Education’ college credits with the goal for students to complete their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and transition to post-secondary destinations. The primary focus is on students facing challenges in graduating and who have the potential to succeed in college. George Brown College partners with the District School Board (TDSB) and Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) to offer the School Within A College program.

The SWAC Program takes place at the St. James Campus. Courses are delivered by Secondary School Teachers and College Instructors at George Brown College. The program provides students the opportunity to complete their high school diploma, earn College level credits, and learn in an adult learning environment in a College setting. Students will build self- advocacy, literacy skills, and learning strategies in preparation to make a successful transition to postsecondary education.

Newsletter SCWI 2018 AFTER SWAC & ADC ADVISING George Brown College participated in a pilot project funded by the Ministry of Education through the School College Work Initiative called After SWAC and After Adult Dual Credit. The additional funding enabled us to offer more Advising to all students in the School Within A College (SWAC) and Adult Dual Credit programs. Student Advisors at George Brown delivered three workshops: • THINKING about Postsecondary Education • HOW TO APPLY to College and/or University • HOW TO PAY for Postsecondary Education

Benefits Students were also given the opportunity to meet one-on-one with an Advisor, with up to 4 sessions provided to each interested student. Another great benefit of the pilot program was that application fees were covered by the Ministry for all students applying to college programs on the OCAS website. The pilot program is continuing into 2018-2019.

Newsletter SCWI 2018 OYAP Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs Accelerated Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs (OYAP) are offered to students who are currently registered as full-time students in high school, are about to graduate, and are planning a career as an Electrician, Plumber, or Residential Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic. The schooling provided is the Level 1 of trade school for apprentice training. Students must be registered for Co-op at their high school during the Winter semester. For 8 consecutive weeks during the semester, they will attend a full time program at George Brown College delivered at the Casa Loma campus. Classes are held Monday to Friday resulting in 240 hours of training. Interested Students first submit an application to the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) Coordinator at their school board. Please see the Co-operative Education teacher at your secondary school to begin the application process.
