Nevertheless, the French did not take effective control of their foothold on this continent until 7^ years later when Samuel de Champlain founded the settlement of Quebec in 1608, at the foot of Cape Diamond on the St. Laurence River. At first, the settlement was conceived of as a trading post for the lucrative fur trade, but two difficul ties soon becam,e apparent—problems that have plagued French Canada to the present day—the difficulty of comirunication across trackless forests and m.ountainous terrain and the rigors of the Great Canadian Winter. -

The grand narrative of Quebec national cinema emphasises the emancipating qualities of this cinematographic language and insists that it contributed to a collective prise de parole and Quebec‟s ascension to modernity. -

The Empire Within: Montreal, the Sixties, and the Forging of a Radical Imagination by Sean William Mills A thesis submitted to the Department of History in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada November 2007 Copyright © Sean Mills 2007 Abstract This thesis explores the wide variety of ways in which radical intellectuals and activists in Montreal used and adapted Third World decolonization theory to build a broad movement of solidarity and anti-colonial resistance from 1963-1972. Beginning in the early 1960s, activists and intellectuals in Montreal began drawing upon the language of Third World decolonization to resituate their understandings of themselves, their society, and the world in which they inhabited. Through their engagement with Third World liberation theory – and the closely related language of Black Power – radical intellectuals in Montreal sought to give new meaning to the old conception of humanism, and they worked to drastically expand the geographical frame of reference in which Quebec politics were generally understood. After analyzing the shifting meaning of decolonization in the period leading up to the late 1960s, this thesis explores the ways in which various groups adopted, built upon, challenged, and shaped the conception of Quebec liberation. Montreal’s advocates of women’s liberation, the city’s Black activists, defenders of unilingualism, and labour radicals were all deeply shaped by the intellectual and urban climate of Montreal, and by ideas of Quebec decolonization. They developed their own individual narratives of liberation, yet linked by the flexible language of decolonization, these narratives all greatly overlapped, forming a vast movement which was larger than the sum of its parts. -

Indeed, documentary and realist models have long dominated this film tradition. However, surprising incursions of the supernatural have occurred with increasing frequency in Québec films since the late 20th century. -

Literary Influences of Negritude and of Decolonization on Quebec During the Nineteen-Sixties Donald A
Donald A. Clermont 101 LITERARY INFLUENCES OF NEGRITUDE AND OF DECOLONIZATION ON QUEBEC DURING THE NINETEEN-SIXTIES Donald A. Clermont State University of New York College at Plattsburgh Abstract This essay outlines the foreign influences on several of Quebec’s most im- portant writers and magazines during the 1960s. The literary and intellec- tual movement in Quebec during this decade saw significant changes as it helped shape a more progressive and modern Quebec. The overall global po- litical climate of this time is outlined, but the essay particularly draws upon influences on Quebec by two major intellectual and social movements of this era: negritude and decolonization. Selected works of Michèle Lalonde, Paul Chamberland, and Gaston Miron are discussed as well as contextual evidence that restates the important literary influences of these movements. Linguistic alienation and the concept of a colonized state made these movements of cul- tural empowerment particularly accessible to Quebec as it searched for a na- tional pride and identity. This essay focuses primarily on the influences of the negritude and decolonization movements and excludes influences on Quebec from other artistic and political movements and non-Francophone countries such as England and the United States. The essay also focuses on literature and excluded influences on visual and musical art in Quebec. Résumé Cet essai expose les influences étrangères exercées sur des écrivains et magazines québécois parmi les plus importants au cours des années 1960. Le courant littéraire et intellectuel québécois de cette décennie fut un acteur de changements importants, participant à la création d’un Québec plus progressif et plus moderne. -
