This trip gives you an opportunity to take in the cultural aspects of Namibian life, and includes real interactions in local villages and allows you to experience daily life with the San, in Owamboland. There is also an opportunity to see Bushmen paintings and rock engravings at Twyfelfontein– giving you an insight into the history of the local tribes. We detail below a sample itinerary: note that we can change the location, duration, order and add in other destinations such as the Skeleton Coast, a Spa & Game Ranch or Cape Town. Day 1 Overnight flight to Windhoek via Johannesburg from London. Day 2 On arrival in Namibia, you will be transferred to your accommodation for a 1 night stay. Our ground handlers will meet with you this afternoon to go over your itinerary, hand you a mobile phone pre-programmed with your accommodation contact numbers, a cool box, maps and driving directions. Your hire vehicle will also be delivered at this time and they will assist with signing your contract. This evening, have dinner in one of Windhoek’s restaurants – we provide recommendations with all bookings. (Note we quote on 4x4 vehicles in order to provide ground clearance on the gravel roads). Day 3 Today you will be driving north, following the map for directions out of town and then on to the Waterberg area and your overnight accommodation. Your lodge is situated in a valley at the foot of the magnificent Waterberg plateau. The lodge is surrounded by the national nature conservancy of Waterberg National Park which is home to a number of threatened species such as buffalo, rhino, leopard, vulture and other antelope. It is also a haven for over 200 species of birds. The lodge is situated on the farm Otjosongombe which extends from the foot of the Waterberg up to the plateau, therefore the lodge is the only private establishment in the Waterberg region and can offer its guests guided hiking tours the Waterberg Plateau. This is a small, friendly lodge which can only accommodate 20 guests in its ten rooms. Drive time approximately 4 hours. Days 4-5 After breakfast continue further north to a lodge, located about 35 km outside of Grootfontein. This is an owner-managed establishment, and the hosts make a genuine effort to make all guests feel welcome. The accommodations are rustic, but the food is excellent; good home cooked traditional meals. The owner’s son speaks one of the San dialects and runs half or full day trips to visit the Bushman community nearby. He grew up in this area so has an immense knowledge of the history of Namibia and this region in particular. Nature drives on the property are also on offer. The lodge offers half and full day Bushmen activities into Bushmen land and offers a glimpse into the lives of this ancient civilization. Clients can expect the most informal, liberating learning experience about these people, their history, lifestyle and culture. What to look forward to: Bush walk, village life, making of tools, jewellery and weapons. They will teach you how to start a fire, how and what plants to use as medicines and the different roles of men and women in the community. Drive time approximately 3 hours. Days 6-7 Today you head further north and west to the World -renowned Etosha National Park and to the Onguma concession. Onguma Game Reserve is situated on the eastern side of the Etosha Park in Namibia, bordering Fischer’s Pan. Their nature reserve boasts over thirty different animal species. Predators such as lion, cheetah and leopard are common residents of the area. The concession has recently been expanded to accommodate the lodge’s rhino custodian scheme, leading to the development of a number of new activities including walking and rhino tracking. The bird life in this area is also outstanding with over 300 species having been recorded, including the largest breeding colony of white-backed vulture in Namibia. Etosha in general offers excellent game viewing opportunities while simply driving. The Park is dominated by the vast Etosha salt pan, and many water holes exist, joined by a network of well maintained gravel roads to enable visitors the best chances of seeing the many inhabitants of Namibia’s premier wildlife reserve. Species present in the Park include lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino, giraffe & zebra in addition to many antelope and bird species. Care should be taken to be outside the Park before sunset when the gates close. Drive time approximately 3 hours . Here you are taken on a cultural journey, exploring traditional Namibian practices, rest next to Makalani palm trees and visit traditional homes. With the aim of discovering the beauty, simplicity and dignity of traditional village life, you are invited to look beyond the familiar Namibia of dunes, wildlife and vast landscapes. Here you will discover the Owambo, a people with a rich cultural history. You will have a chance to participate in the traditional daily activities of the homestead and its community. Watch the simplicity and sometimes harsh reality of tradition finding its place within modern society and offering the best of both worlds. Here you don't simply watch, you will be encouraged to join in and learn the art of basket-weaving, cooking on an open fire, cattle herding and clay-pot making. You can even create your own gift to take home with you. Drive time approximately 3 hours Day 9-10 Today you will be making your way through the northern and most densely populated area of Namibia to the Kunene River. Your lodge is located overlooking the beautiful Kunene River with stunning views across white water rapids and meandering stretches of water. Optional activities include white water rafting and river boarding, bird watching, sun-downer cruises, canoeing, Himba village visits, hiking & fishing. Enjoy a relaxing time at the lodge, and appreciate the lush riverine region of this mainly desert country. Drive time approximately 5 hours. Day 11 Make your way slowly south and a one night stay in Opuwo. Self-drive excursions to Epupa Falls, Swartbooisdrift (Kunene), Kaoko, Otavi and other points of interest or a guided excursion to an authentic Himba village can be undertaken. Enjoy a perfect end to your day with your selected wine from the cellar and a magnificent sunset over the beautiful landscape of Namibia's extreme North West. The ancient Himba people in this area still live a very traditional existence, and a visit to their home villages can offer a unique insight into their way of life. Drive time approximately 3 hours. Days 12-13 Today you continue in a southerly direction and to one of the most geographically diverse regions of Namibia and home to the only UNESCO World Heritage site. Accommodation is in a igloo-shaped double bungalows, allowing a maximum of 16 guests at a time, emphasizing the peace and quiet of the camp. Outside each bungalow is an en-suite bathroom with a shower, as well as a private veranda, overlooking the surrounding plains. They all have an in-room safe. Activities include elephant nature drives lasting 3-6 hours, starting in the morning. These guided trips include exploring the surrounding area in a 4x4 vehicle, in search of Namibia's remaining 600 desert dwelling elephant. There are excursions to Twyfelfontein to see the numerous fascinating examples of San art, close by is ‘Burnt Mountain’, an interesting area of volcanic rock, and the dolomite ‘organ pipes’. The drive will include visits to the Burnt Mountain, the Organ Pipes, as well as to the fascinating Bushman Engravings. There are a number of guided nature walks that will cover trails in and around the camp. Drive time approximately 5 hours. Day 14-15 Make your way a lodge set in the foothills of the Erongo Mountains on the edge of the enormous Erongo Crater. Guided walks are included each day, in the morning and the afternoon, the camp also offers many self-guided walking trails and nature drives into the 200,000 ha conservation area. Birding is one of the main attractions with 48 different species been sighted in the immediate vicinity, including Black Eagle, Rosy Faced Lovebird & Ruppell’s Parrot. Drive time approximately 2 ½ hours Day 16 This morning, you drive back towards Windhoek and return your car to Windhoek International Airport for your overnight flight back to London.
