Joanne Drayton is an acclaimed New Zealand author whose output is globally recognized. Her book Hudson & Halls: The Food of Love was the winner of the Royal Society Te Aparangi Award for General Non-Fiction at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards in May 2019 , and was a cover story for the NZ Listener in October 2018. Joanne’s The Search for Anne Perry was numbered in the top 10 non-fiction books on the New York Times BESTSELLER list . It was a finalist in the prestigious New Zealand Book Awards in August 2013; it was the subject of a 60 Minutes programme; and a cover story for the NZ Listener . It is an 'important' and ‘beguiling’ read that has received excellent reviews. The subject of the biography, Anne Perry, needs no introduction as a frequent author on the New York Times bestseller list herself. Perry’s dramatic story of teenage murder and redemption is one that has inspired many. Both The Search for Anne Perry and Hudson & Halls: The Food of Love have been optioned for feature films. Her critically acclaimed Ngaio Marsh: Her Life in Crime (2008) was a Christmas pick of the Independent newspaper when it was released in the UK in 2009. Her other biographies of expatriate painters include Frances Hodgkins: A Private Viewing (Random House, 2005); Rhona Haszard: An Experimental Expatriate NZ Artist (CUP, 2002); and Edith Collier: Her Life and Work (CUP, 1999). She has curated exhibitions and publishes in art history, theory and biography. In 2007, she was awarded a National Library Fellowship , and in 2017 the prestigious Logan Fellowship at the Carey Institute in Upstate New York . She is writing an autobiography and carving a post-colonial chess set in response to the Lewis pieces in the British Museum, and her interests include long-distance running, art, music and reading. Joanne is a research associate at the University of Auckland and an English teacher at Avondale College. She lives in Auckland, New Zealand, with her partner and three cats. Ngaio Marsh. The Empress of Crime's life was the ultimate detective story – revealed for the first time in this forthright and perceptive biography. While Ngaio Marsh had a flamboyant public persona, she was fiercely protective of her private life. And no one knows better how to cover tracks with red herrings and remove incriminating evidence than a crime fiction writer… This fascinating biography of Ngaio Marsh pieces together both the public and private Marsh in a way that is as riveting as a crime novel. Through her writing and her theatre work, Joanne Drayton assembles the pieces to the puzzle that is Marsh, proving that life can be as thrilling as fiction. Marsh wrote her first detective novel in a London flat in the depths of the 1930s Depression, bringing life to Detective Inspector Roderick Alleyn in her first book, A Man Lay Dead. Through 32 novels he would establish himself as one of the great super-sleuths, and Marsh as one of the four Queens of Golden Age detective fiction, alongside Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers and Margery Allingham. In 1932, a family tragedy brought Marsh home to New Zealand, to a life divided - between hemispheres, between passionate relationships at home and abroad, and between the world of publishing and her life as a stage director. In 1949 her writing would earn her the ultimate distinction when Penguin and Collins released the 'Marsh Million': 100,000 copies each of ten of her titles on to the world market. The popular appetite for classic whodunits was insatiable and Ngaio Marsh was one of the best. But her greatest love was the stage - or was it? About the author. Dame Ngaio Marsh was born in New Zealand in 1895 and died in February 1982. She wrote over 30 detective novels and many of her stories have theatrical settings, for Ngaio Marsh’s real passion was the theatre. She was both actress and producer and almost single-handedly revived the New Zealand public’s interest in the theatre. It was for this work that she received what she called her ‘damery’ in 1966. Ngaio Marsh: Her Life in Crime by Joanne Drayton. Otago University Press, 18 October 2018 - 292 pages. Hudson & Halls: The Food of love is more than a love story. It is a tale of two New Zealand television chefs who helped change the bad attitudes of a nation in the 1970s and 80s to that unspoken thing -- homosexuality. Peter Hudson and David Halls became reluctant role models for a 'don't ask, don't tell' generation of gay men and women who lived by omission. They were also captains of a culinary revolution that saw the overthrow of Aunt Daisy and the beginning of Pacific-rich, Asian-styled international cuisine. Their drinking, bitching and bickering on screen, their spontaneous unchoreographed movements across the stage broke taboos and melted formalities. They captivated an unlikely bunch of viewers from middle-aged matrons to bush-shirted blokes. Hudson and Halls were pioneers of celebrity television who rocketed to stardom on untrained talent and a dream. In this fast-paced and meticulously researched book, New York Times-bestselling author Joanne Drayton celebrates the legacy of this unforgettable duo. Ngaio Marsh Crime by Joanne Drayton. Paperback. One of the celebrated 1930s and 40s Queens of Crime' Ngaio Marsh was probably our first million copy author. Her tightly written, stylish whodunits were perennial favorites, rating alongside Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers. She was also seriously in love with the theatre, and her triumphant return to New Zealand to establish the Court Theatre in Christchurch saw her feted and honored with the title dame of the British Empire. With her coterie of 'luvvies' the handsome gay boys who were a part of her entourage and her proteges in many fields of the arts, and her impeccable landed gentry upbringing, Dame Ngaio dominated the News Zealand performing arts scene for many years before her death. A biography was produced to no great acclaim, and it was a tedious hagiography of Dame Ngaio the woman of stature. Dr Jo Drayton, award winning art historian and writer was awarded the Alexander Turnbull fellowship for 2007 and has used the time to complete the research and writing of this her most exciting book to date.

1 NGAIO MARSH, 23 April 1895—18 February 1982 Bruce Harding Dame Ngaio Marsh, the detective novelist, dramatist, short-story writer, theatre producer, non-fiction writer, scriptwriter, autobiographer, painter and critic was born in Christchurch, New Zealand on 23 April 1895. Her birth in the closing years of Queen Victoria’s reign and her childhood and adolescence in the twilight—albeit a transferred one—of the Edwardian era were to prove crucial in shaping the prevailing temper and tone of her outlook, particularly when Marsh set out to experiment with writing as a young woman. Her very name enacts a symbolic and liminal binary opposition between Old and New World elements: a confluence echoing the indigenous (the ngaio being a native New Zealand coastal tree) and the imported (a family surname from the coastal marshes of Kent, England). Seen thus, “Ngaio” connotes New World zest—a freshness of outlook, insight and titanic energy—while “Marsh” suggests an Old World gravitas grounded in notions of a stable, class-based lineage and secure traditions. The tension between these twin imperatives and hemispheres drove and energized Marsh’s career and life-pattern (of ongoing dualities: New Zealand-England; writing-production) and enabled her to live what Howard McNaughton has called an incognito/”alibi career” in a pre-jet age of sailing boats and vast distances and time horizons between her competing homelands (in Lidgard and Acheson, pp.94-100). Edith Ngaio Marsh’s Taurian date of birth was both richly symbolic and portentous, given that 23 April is both St George’s Day and the legendary birthdate of Marsh’s beloved Bard, Shakespeare.

  • Marsh, Edith Ngaio by Jane Stafford Biography
Marsh, Edith Ngaio by Jane Stafford Biography Edith Ngaio Marsh was born on 23 April 1895 in Merivale, Christchurch, to Rose Elizabeth Seager and her husband, Henry Edmund Marsh, a clerk in the Bank of New Zealand in Christchurch. His daughter said of him, 'I can imagine nobody less naturally suited to his employment.' When Ngaio was around seven years old, her parents moved to Valley Road, Cashmere. The house that her father built there was to be her home for the rest of her life. She was educated first at a dame school run by Sibella E. Ross, and then in 1910 was enrolled at St Margaret's College, a private Anglican girls' school with a decided Anglo-Catholic bias. She remained there until 1913, active in literary and dramatic pursuits. Her play The moon princess was performed that year, with her mother taking the part of the witch. The Christchurch Press described it as 'a clever little play'. Between 1913 and 1919 Marsh attended Canterbury College School of Art as a part-time student, supplementing her income with private tutoring. Here she met Evelyn Polson (later Page), who became a lifelong friend, and Olivia Spencer Bower. She shared a studio in Cashel Street with a group of fellow students who were interested in innovative artistic styles and approaches. The orientation of the college was more formal and academic, but one of her teachers, Richard Wallwork, and his wife, Elizabeth, were sources of encouragement. She also formed friendships with the Acland family of Mount Peel sheep station and the Rhodes family of Meadowbank sheep station.

  • Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, PD James And
Midcentury Jacobeans: Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, P.D. James and The Duchess of Malfi Dr. Jem Bloomfield University of Nottingham During the mid-twentieth century, a dramatic shift was taking place in the conceptualization of Early Modern drama. The internal tensions which had always beset the category of “Elizabethan” drama reached a critical point, and from that crisis the concept of “the Jacobean” emerged in all its horrific glory. Pascale Aebischer’s work on the Jacobean has set the terms of debate in two ways. Firstly, her metacritical history in the volume Jacobean Drama has traced the appearance of the term in scholarship and its shifting reputation amongst academics. Secondly, her development of the concept of the “contemporary Jacobean” (notably in Screening Early Modern Drama Today) has drawn on the work of Susan Bennett to demonstrate the ways in which Jacobean drama has provided a source for critical, dissident and resistant theatre and film in the late twentieth century.1 She has identified works such as Mike Figgis’ Hotel, Derek Jarman’s Edward II and Alex Cox’s Revenger’s Tragedy as exemplars of this “contemporary Jacobean” style, which is consciously deviant, transgressive, irreverent and anachronistic, setting itself up in opposition to the tradition of “heritage” Shakespeare films such as Branagh and Thompson’s Much Ado About Nothing and John Madden’s Shakespeare in Love. Aebischer’s ideas have been extended and debated by a number of other critics, including Courtney Lehmann, Jennifer Clement, and the scholars who contributed to a special issue of the journal Interdisciplinary 1 See also “Shakespearean Heritage and the Preposterous ‘Contemporary Jacobean’ Film: Mike Figgis’ Hotel”, Shakespeare Quarterly, 60.3, Fall 2009, pp.279-303.
