Ngaio Marsh: New Zealand's Mistress of the Macabre by Beth Carswell Ngaio Marsh: New Zealand's Mistress of the Macabre by Beth Carswell A Man Lay Dead by Ngaio Marsh (1934) Ngaio (pronounced NIGH-oh) Marsh was a woman ahead of her time. Born Edith Ngaio Marsh in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1895, she displayed a fervent love of the arts. She was gifted and passionate with a paintbrush, and intended for sometime to become a professional artist. She also had talent for acting, writing and the theater from early childhood. In fact, at St. Margaret's College, a school in Christchurch she attended from age 15-18, the school put on a production of The Moon Princess, a play Marsh wrote. Marsh moved to England in her early thirties and had a brief flirtation with interior decorating, but the itch for the arts wouldn't let go. When she moved to New Zealand, her first novel followed soon after - A Man Lay Dead was published in 1934. It was the first step in a long and illustrious career that left Marsh holding her own among the finest mystery writers of all- time, often mentioned in the same breath as fellow female mystery greats such as Agatha Christie, Ruth Rendell and Dorothy L. Sayers. Enter a Murderer by Ngaio Marsh (1935) Like many mystery writers, Marsh created a famous recurring sleuth in her writing - in her case, gentleman detective hero of Scotland Yard, Roderick Alleyn. Marsh was very partial to Alleyn's narrative, and no wonder - Marsh based all 32 of her beloved detective novels around the policeman and his career; in essence, Marsh and Alleyn spent 48 years together, from 1934 when A Man Lay Dead was published, until the publication of The Light Thickens, her last novel, in 1982. Marsh was quite prolific, and while she was by far most famous for her mystery novels, she also published several short stories and three books of non-fiction, including her own autobiography. Black Beech and Honeydew, which was published in 1965, came as a surprise to some, as Marsh famously guarded her privacy. She never married and had a preference toward more typically masculine style and sensibilities, leading to widespread speculation about her sexuality and personal life. Marsh's commitment to the arts, both in terms of writing and theater participation remained an anchor throughout her life; her enthusiasm for theater made her something of a national hero in New Zealand. She often divided her time between New Zealand and England - she was a fervent Anglophile and lover of the British countryside. The vast majority of her books are set in England. In 1948, Marsh was given the Order of the British Empire, followed by being made a Dame of the British Empire in 1966, putting her in the excellent company of Margaret Drabble, Judi Dench, Iris Murdoch and Julie Andrews, to name a few. The tension between these twin imperatives and hemispheres drove and energized Marsh’s career and life-pattern (of ongoing dualities: New Zealand-England; writing-production) and enabled her to live what Howard McNaughton has called an incognito/”alibi career” in a pre-jet age of sailing boats and vast distances and time horizons between her competing homelands (in Lidgard and Acheson, pp.94-100). Edith Ngaio Marsh’s Taurian date of birth was both richly symbolic and portentous, given that 23 April is both St George’s Day and the legendary birthdate of Marsh’s beloved Bard, Shakespeare.

This sub-genre, best known for producing Agatha Christie, spanned the complicated history of Britain involving the Great Depression, two World Wars and huge changes to class structure. It is for these reasons that the Golden Age is such a pivotal period for changing notions of British identity. Through the very British Christie and the less well known New Zealander, Ngaio Marsh, expressions of national identity are explored as well as how the colonial fits in. Focusing heavily on the authors and their own personal experiences and views, this thesis is divided into four chapters to further break down how the Golden Age period affected its citizens and why this detective fiction held such a wide appeal. Chapter one explores gender roles and how Golden Age authors both conformed to them through their choice in detectives, yet also how they naturally resisted some through their own public image.

With the recent growth of on-screen adaptations in both film and serial television forms, there is much new material to be analyzed and discussed. However, recent adaptations have begun exploring new reimaginings of Holmes, discarding his beginnings as the Victorian Gentleman Detective to create a much more flawed and multi-faceted character. Using Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original work as a reference point, this study explores how recent adaptors use both Holmes’s diegetic violin performance and extra-diegetic music. Not only does music in these screen adaptations take the role of narrative agent, it moreover serves to place the character of Holmes into the Romantic Genius archetype.     Yvonne Rosenberg ‘Stop Thinking Like an Englishman’ or: Writing Against a Fixed Lexicon of Terrorism in Patrick Neate’s City of Tiny Lights (2005) In a post-9/11 geopolitical climate, Tommy Akhtar, the protagonist of Patrick Neate’s novel City of Tiny Lights – published in 2005 shortly before the 7/7 bombings – lives a life of various identities in multi-ethnic London: a Ugandan-Indian, a ‘Paki’, an ex-mujahideen, Marlowe- wannabe, cosmopolitan, Londoner, and an Englishman. Yet, he always stays in the position of the immigrant because the often limited contemporary view of the other has led to the perception of internally homogeneous groups. In the course of the novel, it becomes clear how central the issue of fixed labels is in a society characterised by the linguistic and cultural need to taxonomise, securing apparently coherent identities. This article has two closely connected goals. The first is to discuss racial and cultural identity as metaphysical concepts, which inflammatory reporting, however, has often engrained in society as biological facts. The second and more important aim is to stress the need to re-formulate seemingly fixed concepts like alterity and terrorism in order to open up perception and to avoid racial stereotyping. Therefore, I will analyse the connection between the construction of meaning, the linguistic games and the cultural codes in Neate’s novel. London-born author Patrick Neate, who won the 2001 Whitbread Novel Award for his second novel Twelve Bar Blues, has a strong interest in writing about questions of identity, ethnicity, and racial discrimination. In his latest novel City of Tiny Lights1 he tackles problematic issues of contemporary multi- cultural metropolitan life, such as racialised anxiety and white narcissism, in a post-Chandleresque detective plot.
