Chicagoan Mark Mellits offers a powerful string octet that is complemented by an assertive solo piano work by Esa-Pekka Salonen, and the concert features an engaging visual element created by the Chicago-based Cinema Libertad. This evening’s concert is made possible by a generous gift from Robert Kohl and Clark Pellett. MusicNOW receives funding through a leadership challenge grant from Irving Harris Foundation, Joan W. Harris. Major support is provided by Cindy Sargent and Sally Mead Hands Foundation. Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony moves from its famous funeral march to a brilliant scherzo and extraordinarily inventive set of variations. Each Afterwork Masterworks concert begins at 6:30 and has no intermission. All ticketholders enjoy complimentary wine and an engaging Q&A session with the guest artists in the Grainger Ballroom after the concert. Chicago Symphony Orchestra Thursday, June 4, 2015, 8 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2015, 8 p.m. Chicago Symphony Orchestra Ludovic Morlot, conductor Denis Kozhukhin, piano GERSHWIN An American in Paris RAVEL Piano Concerto for the Left Hand RAVEL La valse STRAVINSKY Jeu de cartes, Ballet in Three Deals Tickets: $33-$249 Gershwin’s An American in Paris captures the heady glamour and colorful sound world of 1920s Paris— complete with taxi horns and a sultry blues melody played by muted trumpet. Cocky and urbane, Stravinsky’s Jeu de cartes depicts the precipitous rise and fall of a social climber. Complementing the program’s “city slickers” theme are Ravel’s ravishing La valse and jazz-inflected Piano Concerto for Left Hand, featuring Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin. Its themes of tender love and exquisite longing find a perfect complement in Scriabin’s fervid Poem of Ecstasy. The extraordinarily colorful orchestration reverberates with sensuality and intimate emotion. Chicago Symphony Orchestra Saturday, June 14 at 1:30 p.m. Once Upon a Symphony Members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra McAninch Arts Center College of DuPage The Little Red Hen Glen Ellyn, IL Susan Synnestvedt, violin Catherine Brubaker, viola Daniel Armstrong, bass Lily Emerson, actor Once Upon a Symphony integrates vivid storytelling and music that depicts characters and the action of the story, with props, costumes and images created by Chicago Children’s Theatre. Sing, dance and play with musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Recommended for ages 3 to 5. Pre-concert activities, led by collaborating music educators, begin 45 minutes before the performance. This cherished masterwork is paired with the world premiere of Mead Composer-in-Residence Mason Bates’ Anthology of Fantastic Zoology. Based on the book by Luis Borges, it promises music inspired by fantastic creatures like sprites, nymphs, sirens, banshees and naga—to name only a few.
