For the past thirty one years, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church has become a hospitable place where the human spirit speaks through the arts. St. Paul’s Music, a self-supporting 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, has a three-fold purpose. First, the organization supports mission projects such as recordings and tours. Second, St. Paul’s Music supports the Choral Scholar Program of St. Paul’s Choir School that underwrites private music lessons to deserving youth. Third, the organization continues to feature choral masterworks performed by St. Paul’s Choir with orchestra, as well as professional artists from the Indianapolis area and around the world. Program Notes The inclusion of the anthem, “Lord, let me know mine end,” relates to Mozart’s Requiem thematically rather than biographically. Mozart visited London, the city where Maurice Greene lived and worked, as an eight year-old prodigy on a grand tour with his father and sister. Greene, who died the year before Mozart was born, is not considered today a major composer, yet he held the most prominent posts in England during his lifetime, even surpassing the shining star of the English Baroque – George Frederick Handel. By the time Greene was forty years old, he was master of music at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, was appointed organist and composer of the Chapel Royal, and became Master of the King’s Musick; to achieve one of these posts indicates great success, but to have all three was remarkable. Handel, it seems, may have also been a contender for the Chapel Royal appointment, which may have started the ugly rift in their friendship that is well-documented. The main of Greene’s compositional output consists of choral anthems, of which “Lord, let me know mine end” is the most well-known and arguably his finest. All of Greene’s anthems have various combinations of voices, always accompanied by an independent continuo bass line. While his style certainly hearkens to an earlier generation of consort music accompanying voices, it also looks forward to contemporary trends in Italian chamber music and opera.
