DISSERTATION Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Art History In GRAPHIC SENSATIONS: VOGUE AND THE POLITICS OF THE BODY, 1930-1945 BY RACHEL ROSEBOROUGH WHITE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Art History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2019 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Terri Weissman, Chair Associate Professor Lisa Rosenthal Assistant Professor Kristin Romberg Professor Leslie Reagan Abstract This dissertation analyzes the visual program and material body of American Vogue magazine, a publication dedicated to the modern woman, during two tumultuous decades before the mid-century. In the 1930s, images of the female body, as well as the composition of the page, radically changed, as snapshots, streamlined design, and modern dress reform energized the look and experience of reading Vogue. As the next decade brought war, Vogue documented men and women in the American Armed Forces stationed in Europe and transmitted images of burned, mutilated, and broken bodies back to readers at home. Cover photographs of active, healthy women in the 1930s would shift to highly stylized, fractured images of the female form in the 1940s. The visual modifications to Vogue in the 1930s and 1940s were not merely aesthetic, but heavily inflected by shifting cultural, social, and economic norms during the Great Depression and the Second World War. Analyzing images by key Vogue photographers such as Toni Frissell, Lee Miller, and Erwin Blumenfeld in relation to page layouts, typography, clothing design, and popular culture, this project uncovers how photography and design promoted new strategies to connect with white female communities and articulate evolving definitions of the body and subjectivity. I argue the photographers and art directors under consideration here enhanced the concept of the magazine as a haptic medium by creating visual forms that privileged sensorial connections. Whereas fashion magazines have traditionally been undervalued in academic scholarship, this dissertation draws on feminist theory and studies of materiality to situate Vogue as a crucial object for understanding how the politics of the body shaped mass media, as the magazine fashioned new perceptual experiences for engaging with, and translating, modern women and forms of femininity. ii Acknowledgements This dissertation has been many years in the making, in large part because I began this project just as I started a full-time career in museums. While spending my days teaching from objects on walls or in vitrines in galleries, this project allowed me space to think about objects that were touched, paged through, and held. All pioneers in their own right, the women featured in this show carved a place for themselves in a male- dominated field. Industrial photographer Margaret Bourke-White was the first female war correspondent and the first staff photographer for both Fortune and Life magazines. One of her many striking industrial photographs was featured on Life’s very first cover. Charlotte Brooks expressed feeling like “one of the guys” as the only long-term woman staff photographer for Look magazine. Louise Dahl-Wolfe had an accomplished 22-year tenure with Harper’s Bazaar as a fashion photographer, contributing 86 cover photographs and hundreds of additional images for the magazine that came to be defined by her distinct vision. Doris Ulmann and Antoinette B. Hervey were both students of the Clarence H. White School. Ulmann traveled extensively throughout Appalachia to create portraits that would preserve local traditions and folklore as modernization spread across the country. Ulmann’s subjects are both humble and proud as they are pictured farming, crafting, and peddling vegetables.     African Americans in Military Service World War II to Vietnam National cemeteries were created in the 1860s to honor the service of America’s armed forces, a mission that continues today. The NCA system and its memorial features have expanded over more than 150 years to reflect the diversity and demographics of who answered the call. At many locales, segregation in life meant segregation in death. But the U.S. Army was insistent that white or black, its soldiers and sailors deserved burial in a national cemetery. The struggles and injustice endured by black service members in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries echoed the social and political climate of civilian life. Blacks served in all U.S. conflicts, but the years between the Civil War and the Korean conflict were the most contentious. Desegregation was mandated in 1948. The fight for racial quality is evidenced through the recognition of veteran activists, pilots, heroes, artists, journalists and, sadly, victims. Their stories inspired and helped propel civil rights in America. Here are some accounts of African-American service from World War II to Vietnam as reflected in VA national cemeteries. World War II World War II had been underway in Europe for more than two years before the United States joined the fight in December 1941, following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, HI. Marines were composed of all white men until 1942 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt opened it up to African Americans. Other military branches remained segregated. At the beginning of World War II, approximately 4,000 blacks served in the military.

It focuses in particular on her first phase of production—the years from 1937 to 1943—when she developed an important archive of pictures documenting children’s art and play encountered in the city streets. The dissertation is designed to help us understand the reasons why the subject of urban children’s art and play proved so productive for Levitt in her first phase of work. Why did she return again and again to the sight of children at play in the city streets? Why did she expend so much effort collecting children’s rude and crude drawings found on the pavement and the brownstone walls? What led her to envision the child as her genius loci of the urban streets, and what did she make out of the subject?
