  • Racing Towards a Sustainable Future a Review of the Sustainability Performance of International Racing Circuits
RACING TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE A REVIEW OF THE SUSTAINABILITY PERFORMANCE OF INTERNATIONAL RACING CIRCUITS Edition June 2021 Racing towards a sustainable future FOREWORD I have been involved with the safety and sustainability of racing tracks for many years now, as a driver, GPDA Chairman and a circuit designer. And while I would argue that big improvements have been made in terms of safety, I also know that there is a long way to go in terms of fully embracing sustainability for racing tracks around the globe. Though circuits have started to change the way in which they approach sustainability, more guidance on what sustainability means and how a circuit can be sustainable are needed. This is why I welcome this new research and the data-driven proposal of the Sustainable Circuits Index™, highlighting indicators from the wider sustainability and sport ecosystem, encouraging best practice and calling attention to the importance of transparent reporting and independent validation. Motorsport has historically been defined by its commitment to innovation and excellence through competition. It’s now critically important for our sport to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability through collaboration. This paper highlights the new metrics for success in this global effort and provides circuits with the tools they need to help win the race for our planet, a race which we can only win together. Alexander Wurz Former F1 Driver, GPDA Chairman, and Consultant on Road Safety and Circuit Design Sustainability is one of the key issues of today’s society as confirmed by the increasing attention of governments, media, academics, and industry.

Research is continuously progressing and may lead to new findings. Website In addition to the Racing Circuits Factbook file you are viewing, my website www.wegcircuits.nl offers several further downloadable pdf-files: theRennen! Races! ISBN 0 7337 8145 4 HB 192—2007 ii Preface This Guide was prepared by the Standards Australia Working Group OB-007-08, Risk Management in Motor Sport operating under and with guidance from Committee OB-007, Risk Management. The organisations involved were: Australian Auto Sport Alliance Australian Grand Prix Corporation Australian Karting Association Australian National Drag Racing Association Bathurst Regional Council Broadleaf Capital International Calder Park Motor Sport Confederation of Australian Motor Sport Golden Era Auto Racing Hones & Associates Motorcycling Australia National Association of Speedway Racing Queensland Raceway South Australia Motor Sport Board Troutbeck & Associates Winton Motor Raceway Objectives The purpose of this Guide is to: • change behaviour and attitude toward risk management; • increase knowledge of risk in motor sport; and • explain the language of risk management. The motivation for developing this Guide stems from a simple idea — the attitudes and behaviours of motor sport participants will change when: • participants recognise that their behaviour may impact on another's safety; • it is understood that risk management is what everyone does when making any decision in life; and • it is realised that by adopting risk management practice they make better decisions about their behaviour hence motor sport becomes safer for everyone.

The major categories have completed their seasons with some of the closest racing seen in the final events. Perhaps the persistent fiddling with the rules and rewards systems is paying off. The F1 had everyone madly working out the various permutations by which their favoured driver could finish on the top step, right up until the last lap in Bahrain. Loeb took his seventh World Rally championship title in his home town of Hagenot, in France, with two events left on the calendar. With a very satisfying end to the season, we also bid farewell to the current class of WRC cars, which will be replaced with shorter wheel base, 1600cc turbo engined car in 2011. Citroen will run a DS3, BP Ford a Fiesta RS and Mini will provide a third manufacturer in selected events with its Countryman model. The V8s finished their season in Sydney at the Homebush Bay circuit and was again replete with carnage and position changes, right up until the final lap, where Shane Van Gisbergen ran out of fuel while running in first place, yet managed to coast across the finish line in in third.
