Longford is a town in County Longford, which is part of the Midlands Region and is in the of Leinster. The town is built on the banks of the River Camlin which is a tributary of the River Shannon. The name Longford is an Anglicization of the Irish Longphort, from long (meaning “ship”) and port (meaning “port” or “dock”). This town was one of the only Gaelic Irish market towns to arise without first being founded by Vikings or Normans.

The Mall Complex is a beautiful park in the town which includes outdoor exercising equipment, basketball courts, and all-weather football pitches.

Longford is home to St. Mel’s Cathedral. Built between 1840 and 1856, St. Mel’s is considered the “flagship cathedral” of the Irish midlands region.

The Corlea Trackway is an Iron Age trackway, or togher, near the village of Keenagh, south of Longford town. It was constructed from oak planks in 148–147 BC. The Visitor Centre also highlights other artifacts and history from the Iron Age, as well as archeology and bog culture.
