    Raja Mohan 21M.775 Prof. DeFrantz From Bronx’s Hip-Hop to Bristol’s Trip-Hop As Tricia Rose describes, the birth of hip-hop occurred in Bronx, a marginalized city, characterized by poverty and congestion, serving as a backdrop for an art form that flourished into an international phenomenon. The city inhabited a black culture suffering from post-war economic effects and was cordoned off from other regions of New York City due to modifications in the highway system, making the people victims of “urban renewal.” (30) Given the opportunity to form new identities in the realm of hip-hop and share their personal accounts and ideologies, similar to traditions in African oral history, these people conceived a movement whose worldwide appeal impacted major events such as the Million Man March. Hip-hop’s enormous influence on the world is undeniable. In the isolated city of Bristol located in England arose a style of music dubbed trip-hop. The origins of trip-hop clearly trace to hip-hop, probably explaining why artists categorized in this genre vehemently oppose to calling their music trip-hop. They argue their music is hip-hop, or perhaps a fresh and original offshoot of hip-hop. Mushroom, a member of the trip-hop band Massive Attack, said, "We called it lover's hip hop. Forget all that trip hop bullshit. There's no difference between what Puffy or Mary J Blige or Common Sense is doing now and what we were doing…” (Bristol Underground Website) Trip-hop can abstractly be defined as music employing hip-hop, soul, dub grooves, jazz samples, and break beat rhythms.

Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

    The Metaphysics of Crackle: Afrofuturism and Hauntology Feature Article Mark Fisher Goldsmiths, University of London / University of East London (UK) Abstract There has always been an intrinsically “hauntological” dimension to recorded music. But Derrida’s concept of hauntology has gained a new currency in the 21st century, when music has lost its sense of futurism, and succumbed to the pastiche- and retro- time of postmodernity. The emergence of a 21st century sonic hauntology is a sign that “white” culture can no longer escape the temporal disjunctions that have been constitutive of the Afrodiasporic experience since Africans were first abducted by slavers and projected from their own lifeworld into the abstract space-time of Capital. Time was always-already out of joint for the slave, and Afrofuturism and hauntology can now be heard as two versions of the same condition.     Esben and the Witch Biography Daniel Copeman – guitar, electronics Rachel Davies – vocals, bass Thomas Fisher – guitar, keys Since forming in Brighton in 2008, Esben and the Witch have forged a sound that springs forth from minds soaked in influences far and beyond any standard set of musical touchstones. Nature and literature, art and science, history and the unknown – the trio eschews the everyday for inspiration drawn from sources weird and wonderful, as well as the occasional Scott Walker and PJ Harvey record. Announcing their arrival with the demo-cum-EP, 33, which they sold at gigs and distributed online, led to an avalanche of coverage from British broadsheets to US blogs. They followed this unexpected success with a split release on the Dance to the Radio label, contributing the track ‘Skeleton Swoon’ to a 12” in the autumn of 2009, and their first official single, Lucia, at the Precipice, saw light of day as a 7” through the Too Pure Singles Club in February 2010. Whilst their music was finding its way out there so were they. Sharing stages, both home and abroad, with a wealth of critically acclaimed artists including The xx, Wild Beasts, Efterklang, The Big Pink, Deerhunter and Sian Alice Group helped them find their feet as a live proposition. It was with the release of their debut 7” that they ventured out on their first headline UK tour and in the summer of 2010, they took their ever-evolving live set to numerous European festivals including Latitude, Field Day, Dockville (Hamburg) and London Calling (Amsterdam). The second half of 2010 also saw Esben and the Witch find a permanent home with a worldwide deal with legendary indie, Matador Records, to become the label’s only UK signing and placing them alongside Sonic Youth and Cat Power on their impressive roster.

    An Ode To Better Times: New Album Reviews Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world In the wrong hands, nostalgia can be little more than a marketing tool, something which can be watered down, bottled up and sold. Yet, when done right it can arouse a wealth of emotions in the listener. There is a distinct tinge of nostalgia to this week’s album reviews. From Kölsch’s homage to his teenage years on 1989 to 90s indebted new LPs from Bicep and Steffi. And if that isn’t enough, we have Dimitri From Paris delving into the Salsoul label’s archives, Lone’s wistful leap into the DJ Kicks series, and the return of 90s trip hop icon Tricky. By JOHN BITTELS So, conjure a favourite cherished memory and let us begin… Belfast duo Bicep have, through hard work and an abundance of talent, become one of the most in demand house acts around today. Their killer DJ sets, cheeky edits, and releases for labels such as Throne Of Blood, Aus and their own Feel My Bicep have seen their star rise and rise. This autumn the duo step into the album format with their self titled debut LP. Sounding like a mixture of Airdrawndagger era Sasha and Aphex Twin’s revered Selected Ambient Works 85-92, the album pairs the best of 90s progressive house and IDM with style. Opener Orca is suitably epic, tough yet with a melancholic resonance that lingers long in the mind. Next track Glue is even better; soft breakbreaks and subdued melodies join forces to create something which stirs the very soul.
