On the night of June 3-4, vandals ran roughshod through the old cemetery, which boasts many elaborate monuments, toppling or dam aging some 38 stones. Uras and his crew were at the site last week, carefully restoring the broken monuments. Uras said he wanted to assure people that cemetery vandalism can and will be repaired. He grew up in Hazlet and has been in the monument business for 23 years, the last three with his own company. Some of the larger spiral monuments weigh from 2 to 3 tons, according to Uras. They are much more elaborate than modem con ventional stones and would cost $6,000 to $7,000 to duplicate today, he said. While the workers were there, David Kite of Keyport, the part time caretaker, pointed out some of the damage.
