Thats harder than it might sound, since you have to have a clear light path to go through the prism and the viewfinder, so you cant just stick a sensor in the middle of it where it would block the view. Camera makers loathe changing lens mounts and do it as rarely as possible because it gives its customers an opportunity to switch to a competitors product line. By the mid 80s, Canon had fifteen years of the FDmount firmly established, twenty if you include the mostlycompatible FLseries. They didnt want to give an opportunity to get disgruntled ex Canon customers.

They took the incamera focusassist capability that was in their earlier AL1 and then made a special lens that had a motor incorporated into the lens; the motor would do the focusing. The motor got its instructions from the camera though electrical contacts on the camera mount. The mount was compatible with the FD system, so you could put a regular FD lens on your T80 and use it as a manual focus lens; or you could put an AC lens on any other FDmount camera and use it as a manualfocus lens; but if you put the AC lens on the T80, you got autofocus capability on your T80 SLR. introduced the Maxxum 7000 and blew the doors off everything else, including this camera, and took the market by storm. People who wanted autofocus, and there were many, bought Minolta cameras and Minolta lenses. So Canon and Nikon and nearly everyone else who entered the autofocus market swallowed painfully, dropped backwardcompatibility, and came out with a new and a new series of lenses—the EF series. Using it—you can see why it didnt take the world by storm. First off, its relatively loud. Part of this may be its age, but the grind of the motor as it turns the turns is attentiongetting to say the least. Its also much slower than Canon s newer EF lenses. And the autofocus itself is marginal. In bright light and aimed at a contrastysubject, the autofocus does work. In lesser light it struggles—a lot. If the camera is as incapable of doing those things as you are, then whats the point of having it at all The accessories e.g. the Command Back 80 are likely where the money is; but then, I doubt many people would have use for one beyond the value of having it as a curiosity. Its a niceenough camera but I think its safe to say Ill never run a roll of film through it. Not when I have so many other cameras that do the same things far better. The launch of this mode is attributed to Disderi. Here, everyone of you can add his own. From the collection of Sylvain Halgand. Last update 20120130 par Eric Borel. The T80 may thus be considered as Canon’s first autofocus 35 mm SLR camera. Dedicated lenses for autofocusing with the T80 are called AC lenses. They have the FD mount and also a signal transmission capability. This camera accepts FD lenses but not the AF lenses of the EOS system released later. The design is similar to the T50 and T70 series. The T80 has a builtin microprocessor that controls and focus. The focusing module analyses light split through the mirror thanks to 3 sensors located in the nottom of the mirror box. The signal is passed to the microprocessor which computes the distance and send the information to the micromotor that adjusts the lens. 5 programmed modes are available and displayed on the LCD screen. No manual or expert functions are offered. 3 AC lenses were available 50mm f1,8, 3570 mm F 3,54,5, 75200 mm f4,5. The motor, and the cameras other functions including the focusing motor in the lens, were powered by 4 AAA batterieshoused in the base of the camera. Programmed photography is possible with the Speedlite 277T, 244T and 299T flashes. This was a transition camera which could not valuably compete against Minolta 7000 launched in 1985. Its career was short between April 1985 and June 1986. It has then been replaced by EOS cameras, true autofocus SLR’s with a great success. Something went wrong. This is especially true for vintage cameras that have had more than one owner. If you are a camera collector, it will increase the value of the camera if you can obtain the original documentation. Its also great to read the original instructions for the camera so you can get the best use out of it. Features Manuals for Canon cameras offer a comprehensive guide on how to get the most out of your camera.

With canon cameras having many features and shortcuts, a manual will help you to master the many intricate operations of your camera. Canon camera manuals and guides are easy to follow so you can look up the information you need quickly and easily. Format Most original instruction manuals and guides come in book form in various conditions. If youre a collector, there may be manuals available in mint condition though many have some creasing and signs of use depending on how well theyve been kept. Reproduction manuals are also available, copied from the original booklet. These are often comb bound for ease of use. With a clear durable front cover, these types of manuals are professional looking and easy to keep in good condition. There are some books available that have general advice for using Canon cameras. This type of instruction manual might be useful if you have more than one Canon camera and are interested in how Canon cameras typically work. Compatibility Check the make and model of your Canon camera so you can find the exact manual you need. Each Canon camera is unique and would have had specific documentation in the box at the time of purchase. User Agreement, Privacy, Cookies and AdChoice Norton Secured powered by Verisign. Can hear Camera was not tested with film or to check auto film advance. The T80 will only autofocus with three specially made Canon lenses50mm 1.8, 3570 3.55.6, 75200 4.5, all of which have a large hump on the side where the autofocus motor is contained.

Beyond that, do you get the in focus indication in the viewfinder when you half press the shutter button If you had access to a functional spare AC lens you could determine if it, or the camera, was at fault. Failing that, youll need a service manual and multimeter. GlenI would appreciate the repair sheets Thanks. When FD lenses were first introduced, they all had a silveror black, in some third party lenses rotating ring at the back, or breech, of the lens. When mounting the lens, you would line the red dot on this ring up with the index mark for the ring, put the lens on the camera, and then turn the ring to secure the lens in place. Your autofocus lens is in the new FD style, where the entire outer barrel of the lens rotates when mounting it. Please disregard what I said about the infocus indicator. I was confusing the T80 with the older AL1, which does have an infocus indicatorelectronic rangefinder but is not compatible with any autofocus lenses. The only other thing I can think of trying would be to carefully clean the contacts in the camera body and on the lens with a cotton swab and alcohol, or maybe a pencil erasorused very, very carefully. Check all contacts for corrosion, but clean well in any case. Most likely cause is lens itself. Do not fiddle with it until you get the pages from the manual. I will also enclose some notes on where to look. I will try and do this as soon as I get your address but rather busy at moment, so rattle my cage next weekend if you have not heard from me!! Glenn. One camera, however, has an odd fault new batteries appear to discharge very quickly when the camera is switched on. Camera will fire just once or twice before battery check shows batteries flat. Then camera just makes a sick click when I attempt to expose. Seems like a straightforward shortout, but where could it be. All obvious battery terminals are clean. Any ideas and or experienced shared would be very welcome. Thanks.

Contact your discussion moderator for more information. The display shows ISO400 and wont change. If the shutter release is pressed it clicks once, its as though the cpu is confused. The only other indicator that works is the battery check accompanied by a series of clicks and it also doesnt wind the film on. It was suggested that a dirty mirror box magnet might be the culpret, but I am not sure. It also seems likely that the lithium backup battery might be dead. Anyone have any suggestions. Id like to save this nice camera from the trash bin, but at 20 years old, its not worth too much effort. Thanks, Nathan I would open the bottom and flood clean with 90% isoptopyl alcohol to see if debris could be removed. 90% of the time this will work. Any clues After digging around a bit more I found the battery hidden up next to the flash socket and checked it, and it was good. Then I wnet back to the mirror box and poked around, tweaked and cleaned until I managed to free whatever was stuck. The camera came alive. I put in a new roll and it loaded right up and appears to work beautifully. Now Im off to shoot some film! Thanks all. Nathan Do not know about the T80, but the Li battery is situated over the prism in the T90. Looking at the diagram of the main flex in the T80, it could be in similar position. If T80 behaves in similar fashion to T90, then pressing battery test button will produce series of soft clicks. As you have probably found out, lithium cell is purely for the memory function and does not prevent camera from operating normally. Work through this in a logical manner and clean the poles of the electromagnetic switches first. The manual clearly indicates any other switch contacts that may need cleaning. Be very careful if you move the flexi circuit, they can be very fragile. If the camera still does not function you will have to check the given data with a digital voltmeter. But I did neglect to add that batteries must be removed first. My Bad.

Remember liquids in and of themselves are no enemy to deactivated electronic components. Ya just gotta dry em. THOUROUGHLY. Thats why the isopropyl. A non heated blower will help too. Dont inhale the fumes. Will check and see where I got it from. Sorry about that, I do not remember buying it and that site is the only freebie I use. Lance, I know what you are saying about electronic components. However my work experience in the field of forensics and accident investigation does not allow me to be so positive. Anyway in the T series I am not particularly worried about the electronic circuits, it is the mechanical bits and the removal of lubricants that are of concern. You cannot control where the solvent goes in flood cleaning. It wicks all over the place due to capillary action and not only destroys the lube but also attacks the adhesive tape and sealant that seems to abound in these cameras. Also you can flush out small pieces of broken mechanism, which if not examined and identified leads to further trouble. There is no doubt it works but I would rather find out exactly what was causng the jam. I would try repairing it if I can get the circuit is it in the T80 Service Manual. Where did you download your copy The title page looks official Canon. First time I have really looked at it. I do not have a T80 and have never had to repair same, so manual was just an addition to library so to speak. Parts nos for T70 and T90 are CH30016000 and CH30021000 respectively. As I still use T90s, I have about 15 parts bodies each purchased with different known problems thus I have a very good supply of spares. Will dig out a converter and look at what is on the chip. Many of the chip sets are custom jobs, but I wonder about a DCDC converter. I can see it being custom to Canon but not for individual models in series. Still may be talking crap. Have a friend who has forgotten more on this subject than I ever knew.

Ill dump a T70 and a T90 on him and let him compare the two converters see if they have similar characteristics. As to where I got this manual, I have to confess I cannot recall. It is a hard copy and I initially thought that it was from pdf that I had downloaded not so, no sign of original download. I have purchased a lot of hard copy manuals from Old Timer Cameras. As I am trying to collect all their Canon FD repair manuals, I tend to buy a number every so often. Might have come from OTC; I am just working down their list and sometimes titles are not in correct order. Will check their site later and see what is what. They have such a large quantity of microfiche that pages do get missed or updates are not included. Well if you dont ask, youll never know. So keep fingers crossed. Glenn. I suspect the T80 is more like the T70 the T90 seems more complex. I have not identified the DCDC conveter function in the T90 but note that neither manual shows details of module circuits, only an overall block diagram and pictures of the flexible wiring assemblies. Apparently repairs are expected to be carried out by replacing modules rather than components in a module. Nevertheless I have made some progress. I got the DCDC conveter PCB from the repair shop and checked it out and it seems to be working OK. It has a TDK Ref. No. PCU211E. I started tracing out the circuit for the converter but now believe there is no need to repair it. I will return it and ask the tech to check it in the camera again. The focusing screen has a quad split prism making manual focusing easy, and there is also a focus confirmation indicator light for manual lenses. Im supplying it with a strap and front cap. Instructions can be downloaded here This was Canons first true autofocus SLR, and working cameras are now fairly rare. Its working, so far as I can tell, but condition is unfortunately poor. The camera and lens are both externally grimy; Ive removed some of the dirt, but dont want to risk using solvents. The lens has slight fungus in the front element, but seems OK in the rear.

There are some black marks visible in the viewfinder probably behind the focusing screen which may be fungus. I think it would be a good restoration project for collectors and anyone interested in the evolution of modern cameras. I took some test photos with the lens on an Eos 400D body with FD adapter this includes a compensation lens which may affect sharpness. The lens has no manual aperture controls, but I think it stopped down to approximately F8. See my other listings for more photographic equipment.
