Photo: Petter Foshaug @its.petter Jun 26, 2020 11:10 CEST Artist Peter-John de Villiers: From the Cape of Good Hope to Norway’s Western Cape Born in 1980 in South Africa, artist Peter-John de Villiers has now found his home at the little village of Stad in the Nordfjord region at the Western Cape of Norway. Surrounded by stunning nature and its forces, it is here he finds the inspiration for his work. Peter-John de Villiers is an artist known to capture the essence and the brutality of the nature that surrounds us. He treasures what he sees and experiences, and celebrates natures diversity and sheer power of always being an everchanging factor in every human’s life. He first moved to Stad, at Norway’s Western Cape, in 2009 and lived here with his wife Sunniva Djupedal (originally from Selje in the region) for six months. After spending nearly nine years in Oslo they ventured back to the Western part of Norway in 2018. Now, there is no sign of him giving up the perks of seclusion any time soon. There is always that question, what came first? The artist or the landscape? In his case it seems they came together. After moving from South Africa, he attended the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. In 2003 he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration and spiraled directly into the international art scene. He has since then travelled and exhibited his work all around the world. Wherever he goes, his physical surroundings always seem to follow into his actual pieces. There is no doubt when looking at Peter-Johns creations that the natural world is and always has been a leading influence on his work. Peter-John has a unique style. Through his choice of pencil and brush, he has through the years become undoubtfully recognizable in the international art scene. His work is shown all over the world, from New York to London, to the Gold Coast and Mexico City, from Oslo to San Francisco. His creations have a way of etching into our minds and connecting our thoughts to a deeper collective. We recognize our environment, our elements and sometimes even our hidden minds in his paintings, drawings and prints. The artist appreciates the simplicity of things, from his tools to his environment. Nature is his greatest teacher and he thrives on doing everything by his own hands, shying away from digital tools as much as possible. He his however a master of collaborations, and has worked with everything from famous musicians, to snowboarders, to the skating industry. By doing so he has taken his art to the masses and managed to make it known beyond just hanging in a gallery or on a simple wall. In Norway he has collaborated with brands such as Amundsen Brewery, Sørenga Seafood and the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) as well as the supermarket chain Rema 1000, Sparebank 1 and the government-owned alcoholic beverage retailer Vinmonopolet. On an international level, he did, for example, work together with the footwear brand Vans and later created a mural at Mandrake Hotel in London. Other international work collaborations include House of Maiden, Satyricon, Volkswagen, Vectura, Mercedes-Benz and many more. He has also created several pieces of artwork for music legend Santana, who used them for t- shirts and posters. Recently Peter-John freshened up a grey wall with some street art of a surfer in his own new community, in Selje. What the future holds for Peter-John is for him to know. But we do think it is safe to say that for now he is content surfing away on the shores of Stad, snowboarding in the Norwegian mountains, enjoying being surrounded by beautiful nature and exploring the mind alongside with it. Hopefully producing more art on the way and made available for us as an audience to discover, either in our local communities or on international shores. Glaciotectonic structure and genesis of the Herdla Moraines, western Norway JAMES S. ABER & INGE AARSETH Aber, J. S. & Aarseth, 1.: Glaciotectonic structure and genesis of the Herdla Moraines, western Norway. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 68, pp. 99-106. Oslo 1988. ISSN 0029-196X. At its type locality, glaciomarine sediment of the Herdla Moraines was deformed and consolidated by overriding ice. Two phases of moraine development took place in conjunction with ice movement coming first from the east-northeast and later from the southeast. The early phase is related to development of a local ice dome on Stølsheimen during the middle Younger Dryas (about 10,500 BP), when the ice sheet reached its late glacial maximum thickness in the region. The ice sheet then thinned rapidly, due to climatic amelioration and increased calving, and shifted to southeasterly movement at Herdla. Most glaciotectonic disturbance and consolidation of sediment at Herdla happened during this late phase, perhaps as a result of a glacier surge along Herdlafjord. The glaciotectonic structures at Herdla are local in character and cannot be used for regional correlation of glacial advances in western Norway. J. S. Aber, Earth Science Department, Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas, 66801, USA; l. Aarseth, Universitetet i Bergen, Geologisk Institutt, Avd. B. A/legt, 41. N-5007 Bergen, Norway. Y ounger Dry as moraines of western Norway Aarseth & Mangerud (1974) defined the Herdla Moraines as a morphostratigraphic unit with a type locality at Herdla island (Fig. 1). Sediments of the Herdla Moraines are part of a conspicuous system of ice marginal deposits of Younger Dryas age (10,000-11,000 BP) that has been mapped around the periphery of southern and western Norway (Mangerud et al.

Prior to the War of 1812, an Indian runner was dispatched with a war belt of wampum with a request for the Dakotas and Chippewas to meet at the big bend of the Wisconsin River (Portage). While camped on the banks of the Lemonweir, the runner dreamed that he had lost his belt of wampum at his last sleeping place. On waking in the morning, he found his dream to be a reality and he hastened back to retrieve the belt. During the 1820's, the French-Canadian fur traders called the river, La memoire - the memory. The Lemonweir rises in the extensive swamps and marshes in Monroe County.

The Nordfjord-Sogn Detachment, W. Norway MIKE G. NORTON Norton, M. G.: The Nordfjord-Sogn Detachrnent, W. Norway. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 67, pp. 93-106. Oslo 1987. ISSN 0029-196X. In western Norway thick continental sediments of Devonian age are found in four basins each bounded to the east by major fault zones. Shallowly dipping fault segments previously identified as thrusts have recently been reinterpreted (Hossack 1984) as parts of a single large extensional fault. Detailed fieldwork along this structure shows it to be a classic detachment (here redefined and renamed as the Nordfjord Sogn Detachment) similar to those described from the Basin and Range province of the western USA (e.g. Davis 1983). Most of the features attributed to a late Devonian 'Svalbardian' 'Solundian' orogeny are explained as related to irregularities in the detachrnent surface. Other possible Devonian extensional structures in southern Norway are evaluated. M. G. Norton, DepartmentofGeology, UniversityofKeele, Keele, Staffs. , ST55BG, UK. Prominent lateral moraines de1imit the Younger Dryas valley glaciers in inner Nordfjord. In a later phase of deglaciation, in all probability around the early and middle part of the Preboreal Chronozone, an iee eentre east of Strynefjellet dominated, while the Jostedalsbreen area is thought to have played a minor role as a eentre of iee dispersal.
